EA to buy Sega...

Gamers.com: News:

EA To Invest In Sega?

By: D. F. Smith February 28, 2003 10:11 AM PST
Continuing the galactic swirl of merger and buyout rumors surrounding Sega Corporation, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports today that the company is negotiating a capital tie-up with Electronic Arts. The deal would inject some of EA's capital into the entity combining Sega and Sammy, subsequent to their recently-announced merger, and allow the two companies to share development and distribution resources.
This report makes no mention of any involvement by Microsoft, which the Asian Wall Street Journal lately reported was considering a buyout of Sega alongside Electronic Arts.

Specifically, the report indicates, EA would purchase the 22% stake in Sega currently owned by CSK Corporation, a Japanese company with a variety of interests. Since the death of former chairman and strong Sega supporter Isao Okawa in 2001, it has long been rumored that CSK was seeking some way to divest itself of its Sega holdings. Insiders also reportedly believe that EA could replace Sammy as Sega's merger partner, if Sega and Sammy shareholders are unable to come to terms during negotiations over their equity ratio and other details of the planned merger.

As the landscape of Sega's future continues to shift, we'll keep you posted on any new developments

At least we'll see Sega's games on ALL platforms... So don't bitch about Sega dropping in quality. Only thing is that Sony might turn into Son'ys bitch.

hmm... this could be the workings of a great EA/Sega relationship in the future!!!!

My thing is... if this happens, what happens to the Sega sports games and EA sports games? I could see the NBA product merger being amazing, but NFL...

also, can you please provide a link?

Once Sega becomes a third party they will beat out EA to become the top third party developer!

... Wait, what?

I guess it's not confirmed though, either way Sega hasn't beaten EA so my little comment is still valid :sneaky:

if you can't beat em, join em... I guess Sega will live up to thier dream afterall ;)

I wonder what gekko has to say about this besides "I hope this doesn't happen" and "this news is complete BS"

Sega is beating them. Quality is what counts, and quality is based on my opinion ;)

I hope this doesn't happen, true. I hope no one buys them. But I would rather see EA buy them than MS. I want Sega to be independent, and not tied with MS.

And about the BS, I saw it here first, so I believe it:

I completly agree... if EA buys them we will see the games on ALL platforms. If MS buys them, then kiss it good bye.

If EA buys them there can be just one dominant sports developer in the world again (no more $250+ sports game seasons for me!)

So??? I thought you like Madden... but yes it would be a problem. Who else could oppose them?? Konami with Pro Evolution Soccer?? Microsoft with NFL Fever??

Dyne 02-28-2003 07:15 PM

Gar! I know I'll end up working at EA in at least two years, but this is ridiculous! You know exactly what EA would do to Sega's games.

Besides, they absolutely ABHOR eachother. Hasn't anyone noticed that?

gekko 02-28-2003 08:12 PM

Who says EA will touch Sega's Sports games? If half the world buys Madden, half buys 2K3, they get all the money. Not like it matters.

Konami has 4 soccer games, they compete with themself. I don't see EA doing anything to them but taking in the dough.

GameKinG 02-28-2003 10:48 PM

As long as they are third party Im fine. Though when EA buys people they many times turn to m00t.

Jonbo298 03-01-2003 02:35 AM

If EA does buy a good chunk of Sega, they could combine their ideas on the sports games and improve some areas. And Sega could tell EA that such and such game is ****ty and EA could say it the other way, but not as often:D This would be good for the gaming community if somehting like this happened. I would like it. 2 good companies sharing their resources :D

Seems like every big developer for their specific genre is either buying or merging with eachother....

Square and Enix ... 2 of the greatest RPG developers are now one...

And now, 2 of the greatest sport developers will probably be one.

I don't want EA to buy them for one thing and that is EA will F*** them over like every other Dev they own! to start with they will be happy to let them do what they want then they will drop the Sega name and make the whole of Sega in house (Aka EA Japan) other teams that don't make the cut will be axed. If Ea gets sega you will see the end of them in a matter of years!

At lest if Microsoft gets them they will still be able to do what they do best and not be cut up into some forum of super dev of EA. Really I don't want them to be in with any of the major names but if push comes I would say let Microsoft do then at lest Sega will still be Sega!

I wonder if they could use the John Madden name, and use the Sports Centre in the same game... Because John Madden is with another chanell.
