Games in linux... Question for sdtPika
ok. dunno if you can help me here.
but the other week i finally found the linux version of Unreal Tournament 2003 hiddon on the 3rd windows install CD. so i installed it. updated it. got it running and it works pretty ok. (slight frame rate drop. i hear that happens tho) But my problem occurs in the sound...... it sounds like UTTER CRAP. and i cant figure out why. i mean if you think about playing a video game. but hearing the sound of it over a phone......it sounds worse then that. i had to turn it off cuz the static and screeching in the sound was hurting my ears. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy sound card. id presume its a settings issure or maybe driver. but the creative site has no linux drivers for it. :( any idea's? |
Hullo there Null.
Hmm. Interesting. U2k3 works just dandy in Linux at this end (not even the frame rate drop), and I too have a soundblaster audigy. Firstly: does normal audio sound OK? If not, then your audio drivers are fubarred somewhere. Creative DO have Linux drivers, but never seems to list them on their site (I'm assuming you have a normal Audigy, not an Audigy 2, which doesn't have full Linux support as yet). The drivers you're looking for are listed here. You'll want the EMU101k drivers. Although Audigy support has been solid in all recent distro's, so unless you're drivers got munged somewhere, I'd say this wasn't the problem. USENET has also unfortunately furnished no problems like your own. You may want to try installing the ALSA sound libs if you don't have them already, which you can grab (for RH anyway) over at FreshRPM's. Try that, and in the meantime I'll have a gander about somewhere. BTW, it seems that many people have experienced frame drops - seems this is due to U2k3 using an absolute gobload of RAM. Most people recommend having at least 512 MB of RAM for it (!). BTW, if anyone still plays the old version, you might be able to catch me on the AMLP sniper server :) |
thx. i'll try thoes drivers. i read somewhere about something XMMS enables that might screw it up? *shrug*
as far as i know normal sound sounds fine. altho i havnt run anything as complex as the sounds running in a game. the music intro to the game and MP3's sound fine i think. and i have 512MB DDR ram. GFX card has 128MB DDR Ram. i dont see me having a ram problem. You should try DeathBall for UT2k3, thats pretty much all i play recently. at least until Weapons Factory or Fortress comes out for it. |
Pika, I'm building a Windoze ME/Linux Dual-Boot PC and I'm getting an Audigy 2 on it, just out of curiosity, do you know when Linux Drivers for the Audigy 2 which you said isn't fuly suported, YET, will be out?
Like, how long does it take for Linux to get drivers, we know M$ is slow, but Linux I'm not sure about, besides doesn't Linux actualy use drivers that *gasp* WORK!? |
