The US team loses?!?!?!?!?!???

As the WBC heads to the quarterfinals, one unbeaten team remains ... and it's not the one you expected. Argentina improved to 6-0 with an 87-80 upset of the United States on Wednesday, the Americans' first loss since NBA stars began playing in international competition 10 years ago.

I guarantee this is the last time the comitte is Lazy on picking a US "Dream Team"

Well what do you expect, I mean, its not like the team gives a damn about playing in the round robin when they know that they are going to win.

Perfect Stu 09-05-2002 06:17 PM

exactly...they're just having fun in the round robin...if they don't win the tournament, then I'll be surprised...

Bet you're surprised now :). But don't worry, Yugoslavia beat us by 32 points. So it's normal for them to beat you as well :p.

Seriously though, they're very good. It's not like you lost to any team. They are the European champions.

I thought US lost by 3 last night

anyway, they are still on a two game losing streak after a 10 year, 68 game winning streak. Worst "Dream Team" ever... by FAR.

They did lose by 3. Why?

Perfect Stu 09-06-2002 11:21 AM

I'm amazed. This is BASKETBALL. Now the US are FIGHTING for 5th place.

I always knew Peja Stoyakovic (sp?) was the best damn player in the history of basketball :sneaky:

Maybe if they had some All-Star game starters on the roster this wouldn't have happend.

I mean, the best 12 players in the NBA would kill anbody, but this weak Dream Team just killed our greatness.

that's not the point

The current US team has twice as much talent, if not more, than any other team in the tournament...

Which other starting roster can match up with Baron Davis, Michael Finley, Paul Pierce (who's pretty much as good as anyone else in the NBA), Elton Brand and Jermaine O'Neal? (that is, I think O'Neal's on the team)

They still should have easily won the tournament. Cockiness, overconfidence and lack of desire killed them. Not the players.

Mushlafa 09-06-2002 03:48 PM

Yeah this is a pretty weak dream team... they should have like .. Shaq at centre... Jason kidd playing point gaurd.. y'know duncan playing power forward? Somethin like that.. im too lazy to think of a great team right now..

Well, the first loss was definatly over confidence... but the second????

How could they not learn thier lesson?

The first game (may have) had nothing to do with talent, but the second did. If the real dream team were out there, they wouldn't have lost, no matter how cocky they are.

your last statement is true

but it still doesn't matter...

the current US team is much more skilled than any other in the tournament. In fact, I bet the US could make three teams that could all win the damn tournament. Yugoslavia may be very good, but the United States dominates in basketball more than any other sport besides (American) football. Try to name more than 2 players on Yugoslavia that are better than any of the US team members.

Joeiss 09-06-2002 06:56 PM

Man, the second loss was out of cockiness as well. They lost the first game, so they (and basically the rest of the world) were like "oh, that was just a fluke, this will never happen again". So, they were overconfident last night as well.

Oh well up here in canada we don't have to worry about this whole thing....our dream team consists of skilled players that have honed their talents to hit the backboard.........sometimes

Peja Stoiocavich (sp?) and Vlade Divac...

Divac would start over Jermane Oneal, and Peja, well, he's Sacremento's go to outside guy (in the regular season, he was injured when they played the Lakers) and he's the 3 point champion.

Then, on Argentina, Dirk Nowitzki... the biggest mis macth player in the NBA. If he were a free Agent, he'd get picked up befor anybody on the US Dream Team, except maybe Pierce, and that's a big Maybe, because Dirk is capible of a lot more.

But I'm not going to say Talent had everything to do with US's short-commings... but I will say it had somthing to do with Talent, or lack there of on the US team. The previous dream teams rolled over teams without trying, or any more heart than this dream team had. Hell, This dream team had to go home with a loss and had to think about recovering from it, and still came back and lost.

Imagine if Dream Team 1 came off of a loss, how bad they would have stepped up and killed teams. Player's like MJ, Bird, and Magic would have killed teams alone off of thier will to win. How many players on the dream team this year have a ring? That's the mistake right there, and that's why they lost.
