Cable modem isnt so fast
the past week my cable modem has been going slow as ****!!!!
is there ANYTHING i can do about it?? |
Well, it depends on quite a few things. One of them is how many people around your house/area also have a cable modem. If everyone around you does, it's going to be slow. Also, it depends on what times you are going online. I have a cable modem, and it's slow for me at peak times, like 7-10pm at nights.
I really don't know if there is anything you can do to make it go faster, but it just may be that so many people are using cable modems. It also may be that when you first got it, you were amazed at the speed, and now the speed might be the same, and it's just amazing you anymore, so to you it seems slow. So yeah, I really don't know what to do  |
OK, My suggestoion is this:
Don't use the ne bedtween 7:0o and 9:30 Pm, it's primetime and your conection gets slower form TV watchers. IF you can get your comp closedr to where your cable line "Leaves" the house, do that, iof you keep losign signal, cal the cabnle company to check the wiring, you might be able to get more speed into your modemif it's conected differently. |
Or get DSL :p

Where can I find a site where I can test my internet speed? :)
|
I got cable too, and I wanna get DSL, it's cheaper for the first 3 months, only $24.99(Can). But i'm also looking at residential ADSL, can anyone clear this up for me? Because i'm not exactly sure what ADSL is....
|
If you do have a cable modem there is a way to unlock the modem to go faster, but the only problem is the server program that EMUs your ISP need to be recoded for each ISP =( I have the Server program for my ISP Blueyonder.co.uk and it really does work.

ADSL is actually the DSL solution for residential use. The A in ADSL stands for a word that I don't know how to spell and it points to the abnormal way the bandwith is made so it can use a telephone line to get download speeds from 256kbs to 2MB and uploads from 128kbs to 386kbs. There are a few much more expensive ADSL's that use the phone line and still upload only at 128kbs, but it can download close to 6MB.
|
it stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line you can get ADSL lines with down load speeds up to 2MBps (16Mbps) but you can only get uploads of 256k hence the name "asymmetric"

Blimey, times have changed....
$24.99 for a 512 DSL line in the US? Ain't that a bit pricey? Or have prices in the UK plummeted to the point where America seems expensive? I can get a 512 DSL connection for £23 pm... as it is, we pay £60 pm for a 2Mbit line... :D |
WoW sdtPikachu who do you get the 2Mbit line off at that price?
(not that i need it I un caped my cable some time ago but it's nice to know for other people) |
A friend of mine (who I met though another old friend from uni) works at a business grade ISP (they have half a T3 line at their office just dedicated to downloading movies), and cos she loves me to bits she managed to get me a cheap 2Mbit line via their servers. :big grin:

Well, I must say, I just got cable again, after being without it for a couple months. Man, is it great to have back. :D Dowloaded Photoshop 7, a 200,000 kb file at 190 kb per second. Done in ten to fifteen minutes. Measuring it with the above website I gave, I'm cruising a little faster than T1. :D
