Do you like being the favorite/underdog?

Let me start this off by saying that I own a gamecube and an xbox. These systems are #2 and #3 in worldwide sales. PS2 is going to win this hardware round in the sales department.

My question for you is, depending on which systems you own, do you enjoy your consoles position. I understand that you, as a gamer, buy your systems based on games but sales play a big role in the success of a system (look at the dreamcast.) If you own a gamecube or xbox do you wish your system were #1 in sales. You would probably get more games, but as we all saw with the psx, getting more games usually just means getting large piles of crap.

Personally, I kind of like supporting the underdog. Even if the xbox is Microsoft's only system and it fails by the end of next year, I get to say that I was one of the few people who got to enjoy some of the greatest games ever. I can say the same about gamecube. There are millions of other xbox and gamecube owners out there, but it's a drop in the bucket compared to the ps2.

And for ps2 owners, do you enjoy your position, or do you wish that you were on a rogue system? I think the cube and the box get more unique games because publishers are more willing to try something on a smaller scale. They don't have to worry about producing many units and it represents a smaller risk (and yes, I do understand that releasing a game on the ps2 is, in actuality, a smaller risk because of a larger user base) but I can't see a game like animal crossing or gun valkyrie being released on the ps2.

For those of you fortunate to own all three systems, I'm sure most of you have a preference. If not, I'm sure you have an entirely different view of the current market.

I generally think arguments about sales are retarded, but I'd like you to look at this from a different point of view. Please discuss.

I one a PS2. It is my only "next generation" console. I am wuite happy with it. I mean, I get all of my third party love with the system. Grand Theft Auto, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear, TimeSplitters, Red Faction, all EA games, all Sega Sports games, the list goes on. I also get some great 1st and 2nd party games such as Mark of Kri, Ratchet and Clank, Gran Tourismo, and SOCOM. I am quite happy with my PS2.

With that said, I would be a hell of a lot happier if I owned all three systems. Since I only own one system, I miss out on the first party games from MS and Nintendo. I would really love to play Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, Star Fox Adventures, Zelda, Wario World. Then there is Halo, Project Gotham Racing, and Crazy Taxi 3. I would love to have all of these games, but guess what, I am not made out of money. :D

I like the position that I am in right now (sitting on a chair). I am quite comfortable, and my bum is in a nice groove. Oh wait, how do I like my console's position? Oh... My mistake. :D I think that the PS2 is in a great position. It has tons of third party support, and Sony is publishing some great games. I would much rather have all three systems, but I am very happy with what I have. And I do not really mind if the Xbox or GCN somehow sell more hardware units. I mean, all it means is that the "PS3" would have to prove its worth in the next generation.

I dont at all care how it stands in sales, though if its position will effect the amount of third party games, that gets me a little upset.

Well, I only own one console. Gamecube. Right now, Im sorta so-so. I mean, a few great games have come out like SSB:M, RE & ED. But within the next 6-9 months, things will pick up greatly. The 'Cube isn't selling as good, but by next year, it will be doing tons better. With all the First Party Software coming out, this is a Nintendo Fan's biggest "dream;)" My stance is a wait approach. The games are coming soon.

This is exactly why I am happy that I did not get a GCN when it launched. I was so pumped about it, and then I won a PS2 at a golf tournament. So I just got games for PS2. But now I think I might get a GCN, next price drop or for Christmas. Can't say no to those first party Nintendo games!

I've been a big supporter of the "underdog" console since I bought a Saturn over a Playstation. And I never regretted it. I own a PS2 and an Xbox, I owned a Gamecube for a month before selling it off, and while I certainly like my PS2 and own a dearth of games for it I think I simply enjoy my Xbox more.

For me its sort of being my own nerdy way of being a rebel. Owning a Saturn, for instance, instantly made you something of a video game equivelent of a Radiohead fan: the type of gamer that just knows his/her stuff. Sort of like the snooty Art*** that uses a Mac (no offense to Brian). You met a Saturn fan and you just KNEW they had to import at least half of their collection mostly because the domestic market was so loaded with **** and sporadic Sega releases. Dreamcast was less that, but it still had this bizarre import scene you just don't seen sprout up around a "#1" system. I bet if I went with Playstation and then went straight to PS2 I would've been less cynical about stuff while not owning or experiencing what I have.

Xbox is sort of like that with me now, but less import wise. Even though I got mine modded.... I don't know. I own a PS2 and like it quite a bit but the stuff more up my alley is what's showing up on Xbox. Amped, Halo, Gun Valkyrie, Murakumo, NFL Fever 2003, Jet Set Radio Future, and Dead or Alive 3 are all games that can't really be done on PS2 and are more what I want. Though I like VF4 CONSIDERABLY more than DOA3.

Plus I like Microsoft's approach to treating gamers. It always seems like the underdog is the one that doesn't take its audience for granted and are the ones who'll bend over backwards to get people to buy their system. I've noticed, over the years, Sony is gradually getting this "**** You We Rock" pre-crash Atari hubris floating around it. And I haven't been able to warm up to Nintendo since SNES. They just frustrate the hell out of me.

I treat every generation the same way. Support the rogue system, if its any good, and fill in the cracks with the number one system. I didn't buy a PS2 game for 4 months until Mark of Kri.

So to answer your question, quite erratically I might add, yes.

Null 08-13-2002 08:43 AM

going into the Saturn vs Playstation years.... or year depending on how long saturn actually lasted :p

Wouldnt the Playstation have been considered the underdog???

i mean... new company heading into the race against a console giant like Sega? (not to mention Nintendo)

playstation won that hands down. but at the beginning i certainly woulda said Playstation was the underdog...... Didnt saturn also get a head start by releasing thier console first?

eh *shrugs*

Tombor 08-13-2002 11:26 AM

Not exactly. Sega really ****ed up its launch and it was more or less done as a system here pretty fast. By 96 it was all Sony and when Nintendo showed up it was, well, all Sony..... Saturn was more or less still born.

Crono 08-13-2002 11:59 AM

I don't really care about the system's sales, as long as it has the games that I want to play, I'll buy it.

gekko 08-13-2002 12:00 PM

I don't exactly support the underdog because they are the underdog. I don't think I go for the underdog consoles, but when I look at it, they all give me the best gaming experience.

PS2, been dusty since the day I got it. Played SSX a little, but overall, I was never really impressed by the system, and to this day it remains my least played console. Honestly, very few games have caught my interest, and aside from SOCOM, I doubt I'll be playing it much in the future either.

Xbox, hate it and will always hate it. Microsoft should go bankrupt, and close down, and have Bill Gates be all over the news being sued for corporate fraud. But with that cleared up, Xbox is a good system. Sucked at launch, sucked until the day the Controller S was released, then became a playable console. But since they it's got some great games, and has a great future. Only people giving us an online plan, and for someone like me with a HDTV and surround sound, the hardware is the best by far, and MS makes sure people get the best graphics and sound, something I bitch at Nintendo about on IGN quite a bit. Seems like MS is trying their hardest to give us a good console. And as many problems as I have with MS, and as many mistakes they have made, and will continue to make, they are doing things right with Xbox. I'll be much more willing to invest in Xbox 2 than I will be PS3.

Wow, ummm...so...you like it? or...

I agree with nearly everything Tombor said, but in any case...

I own a Xbox and GameCube, I do not regret purchasing either, but I am enjoying and playing my Xbox much more than my GameCube, but then I also have 7 games on my Xbox and only 2 on my GameCube. Xbox is the underdog right now, and I am more then willing to support it. Why? Because they care the most about the consumers. I mean, Microsoft could really care less about consumers, all they care about is the dollar signs on their head, but they care a lot more than Sony and Nintendo.

Sony... they could give a rat's ass about their consumers. I hope everyone remembers how Sony only put 4 VRAM onto the Playstation 2. Almost every single developer came to them, and complained to them; Sony basically said 'Good luck.' Although they were able to overcome the shortage of VRAM Sony could have been a little more helpful. Lets also still remember the Playstation 2 only has 2 controller ports, Sony's answer: 'To keep the cost down.' Now we all know that is a bunch of bull****, the Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Xbox, and GameCube were all able to have 4 controller ports and price the console reasonably. I'm sure that Sony would also have been able to. And then again I hope everyone remembers the crappy launch the Playstation 2 had. What was that one good game? Madden I believe. Sony will only pump out good games when they forced to, and that is simply sad. Of course the launch of the Playstation 2 was great, because Sony targets idiotic casual gamers that don't know any better, which is quite sad in my opinion. Sony has never answered their consumer's wishes. Remember the modem and the broad band adapter are still being sold separately. That's an extra $40 for the modem adapter and around $100 for the hard drive. And you thought Sony wanted to keep the price down. With the console pricing at $200 that's $340 for the console, modem, and hard drive. Where as the Xbox has the hard drive and modem built in for only $200. Of course the PS2 hard drive is 40 gigs but you will never fill that, I haven't even been close to filling that on my computer. Also, the backward compatability sure flopped didn't it? Who actually uses that? No one that I know, and I know a lot of people that own a Playstation 2. It was a great advertising position for Sony though, but it really meant nothing.

Onto Nintendo... they are the age-old company of videogames. They'll always be around to the day videogames die, why is that? Because of the fan boys that love Nintendo. Basically, that is the reason. No doubt they have come out with some great games, but they really don't listen to their consumers. Did the consumers want a cel shaded Zelda? Of course not, they wanted a realistic Zelda. But then the 'God' Miyamoto came out saying it was great, then all the Nintendo fan boys do the Iraqi military walk behind him and follow him. Of course now everyone loves it... I wonder why. Nintendo will always pump out the usual franchies. The usual characters. The usual games. Nothing more, nothing less. They will sell.

Now the mighty Xbox. But is it really mighty? Not really... Microsoft has no intention of making a profit this generation. Next generation they will try to make a profit. So yes, another Xbox is almost guaranteed you little fan boys. Microsoft did give fans what they wanted. They give them the most powerful system; modem and hard drive built in, four controller ports. Although many people think they still screwed up the controller, I am perfectly happy with it. Microsoft has given the fans what they have wanted, more than Sony and Nintendo so far this generation. They have given them the best online service, and a line-up of games they truly want. And a much better launch than Sony. Microsoft has the hardcore games for the hardcore gamer.

So... I probably went a little over the original topic, but whatever.

I agree with almost all of that. I origionally wanted to get a ps2 as my second system but after playing the xbox the choice just seemed clear. Halo in co op was the most fun I'd had in long time (video game wise.) The xbox truly is the system of choice for the hardcore gamer, as for nintendo, what can I say, im a bit of a fanboy.
