I suspect that Volcano in the background has something to do with the whole game. I noticed it was red around most of it. Has the Lava already erupted or what the hell is it?

That symbol thing on the box looks like the guy from Luigi's Mansion. Maybe he made Mario's watertank-thing and you have to hit those boxes to get new abilities for it...
