I would like it more if it had the original 150-250 pokemon in 3D.

I'm pretty sure there will be a way to acquire those pokemon in the game.

I haven't even started PKMN Diamond... Maybe I should skip those 2 generations and immediately go to X/Y?

Probably.

Pokemon games don't change that much. There's always some new interesting features, but the formula is the same.

Reason is there's always a new generation of kids who this will be their first Pokemon game, and maybe first RPG. The things those kids will like about Pokemon are the same things we liked about Pokemon, so they can't really change things much.

I'm ok with that, but I think you're cool to just skip some.

If you did want to play one that's out currently, I'd say Black/White or Black/White 2. Those games let you reuse TM's, which is awesome.

And gets some bonus points
For trying to be fresh by not re-using any Pokemon through your first trek through the game
