Its so hard because, really, I'd prefer cheesecake. You'd think the answer would then be "cake," but cheesecake is really closer to a custard pie. But its also its own thing and shouldn't be confused with either cake or pie.

Anyway, I picked pie because at least its honest.

So far I've made about 15 cakes, but never a pie. I want to though. I like pies better (and they're usually healthier).

There really is no confusion: It's a custard pie. No flour or leavening, and uses eggs as a thickener and binder. Everything aside from the name makes it a pie.
