Netscape 7
 

My dad downloaded Netscape 7.0 and installed it. I think it's a preview version or something. Anyways, this program is running great so far. All the problems with previous Netscapes (runs slowly, doesn't have a cache so hitting back will be quick, hitting return on a form doesn't hit the OK button among others) seem to have been fixed, and it's much more stable than Internet Explorer so far.

My only concern is that I don't know how this is going to do on a slow computer. I'm running this on a G4 450 with a cable connection. On a slow computer (like my other comp) or on dial-up, it may be different.

Oh yeah, and layouts seem to be almost identical to Internet Explorer.

I think I've just gotten rid of another Microsoft program on my computer. :D

Just downloaded it. So far, I like it a lot. The issues I had with previous versions seem to be fixed in this one. We'll just have to see how it manages against Microsoft's powerhouse... Thanks for a good old fashioned recommendation Xantar! :D

W00t! I hated version 6, so I'll give 7 a download.

I haven't tried it, I still am not a big fan of Netscape. I use OmniWeb periodically though, that's a damn good browser.

Netscape is OK... but other browsers like Mozilla and Opera are better IMO.

Mozilla may be a little more bloated that Netscape (they both use the same/similar rendering engine) but it does have lots of lovely little features, like the pop-up blocking which is even better than the ones in Opera.

Opera is much faster than Mozilla, and uses less system resources, but it either isn't free or you have to put up with an ad. I love Opera so much though that I'm going to buy it. especially since it's available for Windows, Mac, Linux, BeOS and Symbian OS (used in remote controls, amongst other things).

All three of the above knock internet explorer into a cocked hat. I've "uninstalled" IE on my Windoze partition, and have tried to diasble all the stuff that isn't essential for the OS (sigh). I've not used IE in over two months... opera will now do everything I need.

As long as people stop using IE, I'm happy :)

Pika, apparently Netscape 7 actually uses the Mozilla engine (it doesn't just borrow the looks but also has several features my favorite of which is tabs). Do you know if this is true?

And for some reason I get fewer pop-ups with this browser. Maybe it's because I keep opening new locations in tabs.

P.S. I'm up to a consistent 30 WPM with my Dvorak keyboard now. :)

Yeah, Netscape 7 is based on much of the Mozilla engine. When Netscape released Netscape as open source, it was done on the assumption that Netscape could grab the bits of it back they wanted to - a new software license was created in order so that Netscape didn't have to GPL (ie make freely available to all) all the rest of the stuff that Netscape Communicator used.

Not just cos of tabs, my dear Xantar. One of the first things added to Mozilla by the OSS community was good pop-up blocking. It's quite easy to do really.

Funny thing is Micsosoft never even attempt to add it to the code for IE. Oh yeah I forgot - IE is there to a) infest your computer with viruses almost as much as Outlook Express and b) deliver "rich, multimedia content" read: ads) straight to your desktop. I get the impression M$ get royalties from the banner ad companies for this, cos there's no way any sane developer would include all the "features" IE has (and pissing off the customer) unless there was some monetary/informational benefit.

Personally, I prefer Opera because it's faster, has a better tabbing interface IMO, the wonderful mouse gestures, etc etc. But so long as people don't claim and use IE as the "best browser" (well, it is if you don't mind being insecure and deluged with popups and not adhering to www standards), I'm happy.
