Xbox LIVE being discontinued for Original Xbox consoles and games

So...no more Xbox games on Xbox360.

So no more Halo 2 online.

Pretty crazy.

It's a little surprising, I think, because Blizzard still supports Warcraft II which came out like a zillion years ago, STEAM still runs CS, and etc. I mean what is the point of paying for Xbox Live again? You're not paying for bandwidth...not paying for longevity...so what again?

Microsoft was pretty quick to drop support. I guess the drawback to consoles. I look forward to all the people playing 360 online in a few years....

I don't consider 4.5 years after its successor has been out "pretty quick" as you put it. Any other generation, 360 would be getting replaced this fall. Considering no new consoles have even been announced, I wouldn't worry too much about playing 360 on Live in a few years.

Dropping support for Xbox Live is actually a good thing to most 360 owners. By most, I mean the percentage that don't play original Xbox games on Live anymore (I don't have figures, but I would guess 99.9%). Supporting legacy systems is a pain in the ass for developers, and it prevents adding new features to maintain the backwards compatibility. One example is the friends list limit at 100, which many people request to be increased but due to compatibility with the original Xbox, they were unable to change it.

Xbox Live will only get better by dropping support for the original Xbox.

No surprise MS is finally pulling the plug. It wasn't going to last forever. gekko's comment made me think about how this is usually the time for new hardware, but yet I have no desire for new hardware. Every other generation I actually kept up with news, I was always wanting the next thing.

Now...I feel like the 360 could feasibly go on for 5 more years and then put out a new console or service (ala OnLive) and keep supporting 360 live for years after it until it was ready to pull that plug.
