Musical Instruments

I want to learn to play some sort of musical instrument. Can anyone help me decide what I should pick up? :ohreilly:

Also, no guitars. I don't like 'em and I don't know why.

You seemed pretty at home on rock band drums haha

I'm going to throw my hat into the fold for saxophone or trumpet.

Despite the fact you said no guitars, I'll make the case for the guitar on 3 accounts: 1) They're a lot cheaper than anything else if you just want to learn recreationally. 2) They're easy to learn. 3) For some reason girls like guitars.

Maybe I should learn the Ocarina.

I've decided to buy a Tinwhistle to learn chords and how to read music with. $3.95 can't go wrong.

Who knows, maybe I hate music...

I still want to learn drums, but until I get the rest of my kit back, I've resigned myself to learning useless instruments like the mouth harp and the harmonica.

The piano is probably the best instrument you can learn how to play. It will be the most useful in terms of teaching you how to read music as well as understanding chords. It also lends itself well to other instruments AND it is one of the few instruments where you can play solo pieces that include both the melody and harmony.

A keyboard can also be cheaper than a guitar, especially used.

Yea, the keyboard is a good idea. It's always fascinated me too. I should pick one up.

I agree with KG here. It is the best instrument for all of that. I would also recommend Sax over Trumpet. I can't believe you mentioned both of them in the same sentence, BreakABone. That was quite blasphemous.
