Using a ps2 mouse with windows vista.

I was wondering if anyone can help me with a problem I am having. I am using a laptop with only usb ports and windows vista installed. I have a mouse I want to use with the laptop but it has a ps2 plug on it. I have a ps2 to usb adapter connected to it and it comes up as an unknown device. The mouse is an old style, ball/roller, dell.

I have tried microsoft and dell websites in vain. Any suggestions?

Ok I just went on ebay and picked up an optical, scroll wheel, usb mouse from China. £1.57 which is about $1.98 with free delivery. The payment wont go out till Wednesday though so I am looking at a week or so before it arrives.

Despite this anyway the problem still remains. How do I get my existing mouse going?

Did you try going to the Window's Device Manager and seeing if you can search for a driver? Does it even show up in the device manager as an unknown USB device?

That's kind of weird that it is doing that. Maybe what it is looking for is actually the mouse driver since it detects the unknown device through the USB.

When I plug the usb in it says nothing. When I plug the mouse into it it says unknown device - so I was thinking it might be the mouse as it says the device has no drivers. I have not had any luck finding drivers for the mouse. The drivers on the dell website appear to all be for optical mice. Mine is a few years old. Roll ball style though.

Hmm..yeah I'm not an expert but it wouldn't surprise me if Windows did nothing if you just plugged in the adapter. If you plug the mouse into the adapter and it pops up as an unknown device then I'd try finding drivers for the mouse.

Does the mouse have a model number on the bottom or something? It's a Dell roller mouse? Oh man...I haven't used a roller mouse since like middle school. Those thing suck. :lolz:

You're probably better off investing in an optical mouse anyway. Even a 2 dollar laser mouse is better than a ball mouse.
