Best 2D Zelda games that isn't A Link To The Past

BaB insisted earlier that everyone he talks to says A Link To The Past is the best 2D zelda game. But, what's the second best game?

Both the Oracles hold their own against the rest of the list, but combined they make one of my favourite game mini-series ever. Fantaaaaastic. However, I think I liked Seasons better than Ages.. but then again, that's just me.

Four Swords on the Gamecube was a fantastic multiplayer game that had the old school vibe of LTTP. It was fantastic. It places number 2 for me. Four Swords on the GBA included with LTTP? Meh.

Minish Cap was a kick to the balls after the Oracles. Wtf, Flagship made this? Did they lose all of their people or something? I played most of it anyways, and ended up in the final dungeon. The Wind Waker style was too forced, I think.

Phantom Hourglass was super disappointing. I never bothered to continue.

The NES ones haven't aged well at all.

Link's Awakening was also great, I just haven't played much of it. My girlfriend really loves it, though.

Hm I have to disagree with Dyne here. I really dislike Four Swords Adventures. The stupid level system bores me so much. Sometimes I boot it up and play 1 level, just because I want to beat it. At 3/4 of the level, it frustrates me so much...

I loved The Minish Cap. Had some really good parts, but in general I guess it didn't really feel like a Zelda game.

I finished Oracle of Ages, but not Seasons. I got stuck somewhere. And I hate resorting to walkthroughs, so I temporarily gave up on it. That was like 4 years ago. I always thought the gameboy screen was too small for comfort.

Link's Awakening... it was good, but it didn't really have much of a story. Because of the simple graphics, I never took it reallly seriously.

The Legend of Zelda and Adventure of Link were good, but too primitive to be the best. I never beat them by the way. The last part (incl. boss) of AoL is way too hard. :( And I got bored with TLoZ.

Phantom Hourglass.... I'm still playing that. I really dislike having to play the same dungeon over and over again. The rest is good. I like the ship-building and parts-collecting.

So the best after ALttP? I guess... argh I really don't know. LA or TMC. Or PH.

Link's Awakening is also my favorite Zelda with LttP. There is something very captivating about it for me. I've always preferred the 2D Zelda games.

The only one I've played other then ALttP is Minish Cap, so I guess my opionion is invalid.

it's certainly not invalid....however, I do suggest you romulate some of the other ones mentioned :p

Anyway, I also voted for Link's Awakening. I spent countless hours beating that game. I beat it two or three times, in the DX version they had this color armor you could get....

It was an awesome game.

I'll save this for another thread/another day, but to summarize:

Game Boy Zelda RAISED THE STANDARDS of what you expected from handheld gaming. Link's Awakening featured a HUGE WORLD, it features tons of CAVES and SECRET AREAS, it featured 8 temples, plus the boss temple thing. It had tons of items..characters. It was epic. Ages and Seasons continued the epicness.

Also, the dungeons in the handheld games were challenging and tons of fun.

Link's Awakening is perhaps my favorite 2D zelda game, definitely in a close toss up with A Link To The Past.

*gasp* Roms? How dare you even suggest I touch such foul and evil technology? *slowly slides the flash drive containing pokemon/japanese fire emblems/castlevanias out of sight*

Haha. If you feel like investing time, the 2D Zelda games represent the height of 2D gaming in my opinion. As Dyne stated, Seasons/Ages was an AWESOME combo. The Gameboy/GBC had a great output of Zelda....

Ages
Seasons
Link's Awakening

Wow. I think people (especially of recent) forget that Zelda has an amazing 2D presence.

There's your problem. You can't play four swords with only one sword. :) I think half the fun I had with it was swiping at my girlfriend and having her throw me off cliffs in retaliation.

Multiplayer is key, dude.

It was really hearty and long, too, with plenty of minigames. I think it better-implemented the GBA system than Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles did.

I really like Phantom Hourglass, despite it collecting dust in my room.

Even though we own 2 AGBs and 2 link cables, we hardly played any FSA together. I think we did the first level, then got bored. Or maybe just my brother. Anyway, my destiny is to beat that game on my own.

Three of my friends and I managed to get our high school principal to go over the intercom and announce a ban on video games with Four Swords. It was addictive to play four player, and we did it every study hall.

That was my senior year, so 2002 or 2003. Yeah, good times.

Link's Awakening. Was my first Zelda game and I believe the only game I got teary eyed at the end of.

Never played LttP past the first dungeon. Played Minish Cap up to the last boss and just started Phantom Hourglass but really not liking the controls for that. I loved WW so much though that I feel compelled to keep playing.
