Videogame Advertising

Hey people I am a long time member... I've been posting here since this site was known under two other names, and this account is just "new"/ unused because I forgot my old account information. I know a couple of posters here by the names of "Happydude" and "Mushlafa". Also I participated in the first ever Survivor contest in which i placed 3rd and Yoda won.

Anyway, lets get down to business.

I'm doing a 5 page college report on advertising in video games. I was wondering if you could guys give me some insights on which games/ game developers excercise this stuff the most. Have you seen anything out of the ordinary? Branded content, etc...

Thanks in advance.

I don't play that much, but I've seen it in Nintendo games. For Nintendo. I guess that doesn't really count.

And I remember you. :) Welcome back.

Hey, maybe you could get Mushy and Happy to post more often... also means you are Canadian...

Anyhow, I don't know which avenue you are going with
Advertisement in game, I would look at EA who is HUGE into that, mainly because they do sports games but a lot o their games have branding in them.

If you want to go the opposite direction look at Bungie/MS/Halo which had a ton of tie-in products.

Rainbow six vegas and Vegas 2. They have in-game advertising, such as upcoming movies. I saw a sign for 300 a while ago when I played.

Thanks, I was hoping to make a powerpoint with some screen shots. I will google those games for now. If you guys have any screens to post that would be cool too.

I know theres been marketing based videogames such as that Burger King one for playstation and there was one for the Yaris for 360. Has there been any others that I am forgetting?

Depends on what you mean mascots like Chester Cheeto and CoolSpot have had video games, but not sure if same as advertisement like Yaris (which was AWFUL) and the Burger King games for Xbox/360.

Electronic Arts' Battlefield 2142 contained in-game advertisements from IGA Worldwide.

The 1978 computer game, Adventureland, by Scott Adams, inserted an advertisement for his then forthcoming game, Pirate Adventure.

The FIFA International Soccer series, with commercial billboard advertisements featured in-game since 1994.

In Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, a large glowing advertisement for AXE deodorant appears in the game.

Within Second Life, many brands and products have created stores and attractions within the virtual world, including American Apparel, Lego, and Toyota.

Everquest 2 included an in-game command line function which could be used to order the delivery of food from Pizza Hut.

The Pikmin series where real-life products serve as treasures to be collected.

Coca-Cola is a consumable healing item in Ragnarok Online, an MMORPG.

Games like Tony Hawk pro skater show off a countless number of skater brands making that really smart in game advertising.

In SSX3, 7-up and the Honda Element were advertised extensively. You could get boards with decals of either two things. And in one of the levels you can grind on a pole though the spacious side doors of a Honda Element.

Oh, and for some reason I remember the Sims having a marketing deal with in-game McDonald's products. You should look into that.

OH! And in the Sims 2 you can guy an expansion pack that is entirely clothes from the clothing retailer H&M.
