Can GC play MiniDiscs?

I thought I heard that GC can play burned minidiscs. Was it just for the PAL ones?

MiniDiscs don't fit in. You mean those mini CDs? Haven't heard anything about it...
What's it supposed to play? Music?

Drunk Hobbit 05-13-2002 04:12 PM

Yeah I meant the Mini CDs. Well, you can burn music or movies/shows on them. Each holds about 200 MB.

Revival 05-13-2002 04:36 PM

Like the size of the GameCube Computer demo disks that Nintendo shipped out?

Edit :: I grabbed a few one them.. one that had some music on it, and some other ones, and none of them played.

Thanks shooter.

Hmm, now can someone with a PAL GC try it if they have any Mini CDs laying about? I swear I heard it was possible!

Revival 05-13-2002 05:11 PM

No problem Danny.. where did you hear that this worked anyways?

Shadow_Link 05-13-2002 06:56 PM

Nope, it is not possible. Those mini cd's were just promotional products. They cannot be played on PAL Gc's.

Revival 05-13-2002 06:59 PM

Well, that's just THOSE CD's -- there are many other Mini CD's out there.. some that even have music on them.

GameKinG 05-13-2002 07:07 PM

These are not mini cds. And gamecube will only play its special media developed exclusively for it.

GameMaster 05-14-2002 03:01 AM

Just a general rule of thumb Dan: If it doesn't list it as a feature on the box, then it probably doesn't do it. :D

Revival 05-14-2002 06:34 AM

On the box it doesn't say that the GameCube can be used as a paperweight, but whaddaya know..... ;)

Drunk Hobbit 05-14-2002 04:00 PM

In a thread on this forum (which I can't find) they said European PAL GCNs will be able to play them...

The gamecube has a laser that is 650-672nm (visibly red). That means it can only read DVD media. In the video that Team_BMM showed us, they flashed a mini-cdr in front of us during most of the video. It was a CD-R cause the data side was green. DVD-R media (all types) are purple. Now I challenge you. If you can open your system I want you to put a gamecube disc in and turn it on while holding the lid switch in the back. Notice it checks the barcode, center, then end of the disc? If you put in a dvd-r, it will do the same but stop spinning since no game data was found. Finally, insert a CD-R. What? It only spins for a second! The laser is unable to read cd media. Try DVD movies and cd audio. You will notice GC trys to read DVD but spits CD in your face.

GameKinG 06-04-2002 07:47 PM

Plus, in order to do a music disc on GC would there need to be something programed in the cube for a music menu to reach it.

It's all talk. The rummor you heard was Lei-Wu's website April Joke in which they anounced the cracking of Gamecube in Hong Kong and use of MiniCD-R and pressed MiniCD's. A big fat April Joke. GameCube can only read an optimized DVD medium, under the 128bit Encription code from Capcom.
