Civilization 4

I always thought Civ games were boring, but a few months ago I played Civ4 with a friend and I now love it.

Any other fans? :D

Daaaaaaviiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiddd.......... Daaaaaaviiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiddd........

See what you did? I was able to finally keep Civ 4 at bay, and it didn't know where I was. But now it knows and it's calling for me, so it can take over my life once again.

I love that game. So addicting.

I got it a couple weeks ago and kinda enjoyed it for the first two days or so, but then totally got bored and haven't touched it since :)

I guess I'm more of an Age of Empires guy..

Civ 4 is a good game, although lacks in a few things, it would have been better if it had a larger time span...i prefer galactic civ 2 (currently playing) don't know why...*shrug*

i can't wait for Spore to come out though...

A larger time span than the span of human history from the wheel on to the trip from Earth to Alpha Centauri? Huh??? Do you mean you'd prefer a more sci-fi approach, where it continues further into the space flight age?

I have Civilization 3, and Age of Empires 2. I just finished getting my ass handed to me by the Mongols, actually. Damn Mongoreansh break down my ****ty wall for lasht time.

Anyways, I havent played either of the newer of either series, but I'd probably love Civilization the most. I freakin' adore that game.

You might like Alpha Centauri then. That was the sequel to all four Civ games (in a way, though it came out after Civ3 and before 4), where the game mechanics are just like Civilization except it's after the spacefarers land on Alpha Centauri, and, as human history shows, despite their good intentions they inevitably break up into different philosophical groups. It was a great game, with a great following, but the whole sci-fi thing didn't appeal to me as much as real human history.

Re: Civilization 4

so is Alpha Centauri only space-based? or does it begin in the stone age or something like and you get to advance to the space age?

if it's only space age then i'm good with galactic civ already :)

Re: Civilization 4

Alpha Centauri came out after Civ 3, I believe.

Anyways, i wouldnt recommend that game to anyone. I thought it was horrible, and confusing at first. And once you got the hang of it, it was just relatively queer. I mean queer as in odd, there. I like the premise of it a lot, but it just wasn't executed well in my eyes. There isn't enough diversity from game to game. The maps are always more or less the same, and the outcome is more or less the same each time.

Yeah it's only the space age, after they reach Alpha Centauri. I gotta admit that it would be fun to have a full Civilization game from the stone age all the way into the sci-fi realm of the time after they reach Alpha Centauri, though.

I looked up IGN's review on Galactic Civ, and it looks like fun. I might have to try it when I get a bit more time this summer.

I think I was more or less of the same opinion when I played it. I said it was the sci-fi part of it that turned me off, but really it's not because I hate sci-fi, it's because of how off in la-la land everything in the game was. I mean, all of the technologies you research were (naturally) futuristic. But many of them seemed to have no basis in reality. I'd bring up an example, but I can't remember anymore. Plus, while the basic technology researching, city-building, and military-building game mechanics were all fairly similar to the original Civs, all of the units were (again, naturally) much much different than what they were in the regular Civilization. Admittedly, I don't why I was expecting to have the same civilization game for a game on a planet far far away, but I did.

I think that was my biggest problem -- misguided expectations. I stress the MY part there. I don't necessarily think it was a problem with the game itself, just a problem with my epectations. I'd love to go back and try the game over again now that I'm a little more open to it methinks.

A friend, my brother and me started a multiplayer game over the internet, it's fun, but waiting for your turn can be annoying. :)

I love the single player game I'm in now: I started out with 1 other guy on a continent, with the other 5 on the other continent. The other civilization on mine got stuck a tiny part, leaving practicly the whole continent to me. :D
