10 bucks says they make an episode of South Park where Saddam gets hanged, then craps himself...

well, i guess it's about time...although i agree with some of the soldiers, that this won't do much to end the war and what-not.

Correct. Saddam's been out of the country for some time now anyways. It's just something to boost morale and maybe George W's 9% (is that the current statistic?) approval rating.

I suspect a new slogan being something along the lines of "2007, the first Saddam free year!" followed by a ticker-tape parade, hookers and blow.

It might also be because of a little thing called "justice." I mean, you know...

i dunno...i always figured the death penalty was the easy way out...

i'd rather be put to death than rot in a cell for the remainder of my life

I'm against the death penalty, but I have to concede it was necessary in this case. Iraq needs this closure. If he were to stay alive the Iraqi people would still fear that he could return to power sometime or be broken out by Bathe Party loyalists.

I also found it funny that CNN immediately started to argue that Saddam's execution was far too quick and that the Iraqi government was violating its own laws, blah blah blah. God forbid something happens in the Middle East that they DON'T spin into some sort of a failure in Iraq. The truth is that once Saddam was tranferred into Iraqi custody they had to kill him quickly to prevent any "shenanigans" from loyalists or insurgents. As we know its still highly unstable there, and any sort of failure to execute Saddam would CRUSH the people's faith in the new government.

Hye was put to death, and put to death quickly. I just wish they would "leak" the execution tapes just to make sure that the people finally knew he was dead and would NEVER come back. It sounds barbaric, but Saddam was barbaric to his won people for decades, and the psychological hold that can have on a populace is terrible.

Verdict: The did good.

I don't know what CNN is saying about this, but I'm a little disturbed by the idea that an execution must take place within 30 days of final appeal. If that had been the law in the States, we would have had a lot of innocent people being executed.

And actually, I think the release of any death tapes they have is good so long as they don't start broadcasting it on TV. We're responsible for it. We should be able to see it if we want to.

Yes but if we had gone ahead and executed them there would be a much smaller chance that anyone would have taken the time to see if DNA could have exonerated them. If we never find out they're innocent then our consciences would be clear.

What?

You have to admit these are pretty unique circumstances, and I'd agree with you if this wasn't Saddam Hussein's execution. I don't even agree with the death penalty, but I've conceded that this was necessary. Also, to let it drag on would only spin the situation even further our of control and allow his supporters time to plan and attempt an escape.

Also, this isn't your standard murder case we're talking about, its Saddam F***ing Hussein. The one crime he was technically convicted of was the killing of over 160 men and boys via explosives. Its on tape, and he literally strapped explosives to their bodies and then blew them to pieces. By the end, the few remaining to be executed had to climb over and on top of their friends and family members so that they could get blown up next.

Honestly, there is not much reason for a trial for the few people like him, beyond shaming the once terribly powerful in front of those he once terrified.

As for CNN, I was watching this morning and they had moved from the quickness of the execution to how horribly Hussein was treated prior to execution. Note to CNN: ITS SADDAM F***ING HUSSEIN.

Re: Saddam Hussein Executed

Oh I agree with you, Professor S, that the man needed to die. But irrespective of Hussein's trial, my understanding is that the 30 day limit is Iraqi law, not just special circumstances determined by the courts for this one case. So the next person to be convicted of a capital offense will die that quickly, and that doesn't sit well with me.
