Third world game of catch

BANJA LUKA, Bosnia (Reuters) - A hand grenade being used instead of a ball in a game of catch exploded early on Saturday killing three youths in this Bosnian town, police and news agencies said.

Two youths aged 19 and 20, one of them from neighboring Croatia, were killed instantly while a 20-year-old woman died on her way to hospital, police said. Her sister was slightly injured but two other youths suffered serious injuries.

The blast occurred at 2:00 a.m. in the western town of Novi Grad at a place in the town center frequented by youngsters. Police said an inquiry was under way and declined further comment. It was not clear why the grenade exploded.

ONASA news agency quoted witnesses as saying the youths tossed the hand grenade to each other before it exploded in the hands of one of them.

Bosnia is awash with illegal weapons left over from the 1992-95 war and tragic incidents are frequent despite several successful campaigns by international peacekeepers and police to get people to hand over illegal weapons.
And you thought American toys with their small swallowable plastic pieces were dangerous.

As sad as this is, it's also idiotic.

Leave the stunts to the professionals, kids.

Why would anyone want to play ctach with an explosive?

Wow, the ultimate game of "hot potato". Next they should try musical chairs with land mines. That way if you lose, you really win.

I believe they will be up for a Darwin Award this year.

One of them probably caught it too hard.

Grenades dont explode unless jossled hard, or have the pin pulled.

It would be fine to toss it around normally.

Really? Not dangerous at all? Thats good, because I thought it was filled with explosives. The fact that it can explode if something falls out means it's NOT fine to toss around normally.

You can throw around TNT, or a bullet, and they wont explode unless triggered.

And by "fine" to toss around normally, I meant compared to when the pin was pulled. Meaning in comparison, would you rather not catch a grenade with the pin in, opposed to one with no pin? (not catching isnt an option.)

No. I also dont play professional level hockey, yet I seem to know things about that. Strange, is the knowledge people can have without actually participating in the activity they are talking of.

Where would you like them to be placed?

Strange also that that knowledge often seems to be flawed or incomplete. There is no substitute for experience.

I'm just curious your stance on this.

Is it their fault for being poor and living in a third world country that has landmines placed in random areas?

Or is it the fault of whoever put them there?

Re: Third world game of catch

It's ultimately their fault for playing with them.
