Re: The Face Book

I thought it's only available for people in certain colleges.

Oh well. I'm on there, but I don't pay attention to it because, well, it's useless. And you can't have my name (not that it would matter because it's not my real name there anyway).

But I suppose you can try to find me if you want.

Re: The Face Book

Still can't use it. My junior college doesn't have e-mail addresses for their students so...

Have to wait until I transfer elsewhere.

My college finally got it, and yeah, I'm on it.

Re: The Face Book

Jeez, Xantar, you got some hate for the program, which I don't understand. What do you hate so much about it?

For me it's an easy way to keep in contact with friends, especially ones that I don't see very often because they live across the country. It's like an email system, but better because it gives you more information on the person (and there's no spam). Do you hate email?

Facebook isn't unique, and though I like their format it's limiting because they only allow people from universities and with that only universities in America to join. I started using MySpace because anyone across the world can join (which I need) and it reminds you about birthdays and keeps track of any changes in friends' addresses and phone numbers and email addresses etc.

It sounds like I'm defending it, which I guess I am, but really I'm just curious why you don't like it.

Re: The Face Book

I'd use that, but a heck of a lot of people at my school use other methods, namely Xanga. There's a whole entire blogring on Xanga just for my campus. Of course, I'm not a member, because I'd be the only non-asian.

Does that have canadian colleges/universities?

Re: The Face Book

Is there like a list of colleges that it supports? Because I type my college email address in there and it says its not valid. Im going to a local junior college so maybe it just dosent have us on there?

Re: The Face Book

Your college probably isn't supported by Facebook, Jason1. Sorry.

But at least you didn't get into the scene around five years ago. Back then, it was only Ivy League universities and a few elites.

Anyway, it's not that I disliked Facebook in itself. I just find the whole culture of "add me so I can say you're my friend" distasteful. Even though I was using an assumed name, people were requesting to be my friend even though I actually only really spoke to them once a month or so. Right then, all of a sudden, I'm supposed to decide whether this person is my "friend?" Because I don't actually hate anybody, I can't really reject anyone, but I don't like having to define all my relationships with people so starkly. Facebook would probably be a much better website if it had an option for "people I don't really know that well but don't dislike and sure I would have a drink with them or see a movie if I had nothing better to do."

Besides, far too many people I know, both personally and online, got way too much into it and started tracking other people and seeing who they were having relationships and when they were breaking up and getting worked up about the drama of someone else's personal profile. It sounds silly, but it's true, and I just decided I wouldn't have any of it. If someone is my friend, we see each other or talk on the phone or talk by instant messenger. We all know who we are. To us, Facebook is just a glorified address book, and that's all I use it for.

Re: The Face Book

I hear ya. Some people do use it and then go overboard (who really has 500 friends?). It's like anything social, it can be abused and often is. I get on my soapbox about cellphones, because so many people especially at university abuse them. I've seen people who seem to be friends walk side-by-side right after they leave class both "talking" on their cellphones with other friends for the two minute walk it takes to get to the next building. Don't even get me on people talking at movies or at restaurants as loud as they can as if no one else is around. And so on.

I'm on there. Mostly because of peer pressure. I go by Matt Kettmann as that is my real name.

Re: The Face Book

Facebook is now open to high school students as well, but by invitation only. Facebook is an exclusive club.

Re: The Face Book

I protested against it at my previous college where it was "da sh*t." At my new school no one uses it and only then did I join it where my account continues to go pretty much unused.

Re: The Face Book

Well my Junior College can finally access it. And yes, I have it. I will admit, I like it better than Myspace. Its simpler but just as useful, runs way faster, and it just has a much "cleaner" look to it.

I admit though, people do abuse it. I will stand by my one rule of facebook: I will not accept anyone as a friend inless I have actually talked to you in real life, and I think your someone I could get along with. Even if I wouldnt actually consider you a "friend"
