Errrr....

My computer just ate its face again.

Nothing is existant on my computer (visably) but I can run some programs (Firefox, WMP, MSN) through task manager.

I can listen to my music, so I know it's there, but when I use task manager to find the folder, it's empty. Basically, every folder is empty. For everything. Not just music, and not just mine. Everything.

I tried to run wordpad using task manager, and it gave me an invalid prompt saying I didnt type the name correctly, even though I used "browse".

And I've restarded numerous times, I've logged off, I've shut down, and dreadedly, I've turned the power right off. Nothing works.

I have things I would like to at least try and find and then print off, and if I cant, I'll probably smash my computer pretty good.

But if anyone knows anything besides "get it cleaned" to fix it, that would be awesome.

Re: Errrr....

I'm going to asume you currently run none of this, so to get started.

Windows AntiSpyware
If you ask me this is currently the best free spyware program out there. Download it and then run a deep scan and see if it finds any spyware.

AntiVir Personal Edition
This is my favorite free anti virus program. Download it and then scan your entire computer for any viruses.

Windows Update
Make sure you've downloaded all of your windows updates as well.

After you run these two programs go to My Computer -> right click on C Drive -> Properties -> Tools. Run both error checking and defragmentation.

So after you've run those four programs see if it's fixed your problems and if it hasn't come back and I'll think of some other generic things to do.

Re: Errrr....

I'm guessing your on Windows XP so I recommend doing a System Restore

Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

Go to the last best restore point (probably the last one it made) and see if that fixes it. Sounds like Windows or a program did something weird so I think a Sys restore will solve it if Bond's options dont.

Re: Errrr....

No start menu. No tool bar. No icons on the desktop. Its impossible for me to go to My Computer. It wont let me open it through the task manager either.

Jonbo, when I do that through task manager, it isnt there. Like all the other non shortcut files on my computer. Everything is invisible. Its there, but I cant see it.

And Bond, im trying those now, but I might have to cut short because of hockey, so dont expect a response until about 11-ish.

Re: Errrr....

Yeah, try all those things I listed that you can. Are you running any kind of file sharing program, downloading anything you shouldn't, etc?

if you need to run system restore, this is the path for it on windows XP:

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Re: Errrr....

I cant do any of these things.

I cant get to directories.

I cant get into my computer.

Every folder is "empty"

On tasmanager, nothing aside from Firefox (I have to install it every time though), MSN, and WMP (strange, I think) works.

I cant search anything. I cant open the start menu. I cant search my computer for anything. I cant do a system restore.

Re: Errrr....

Well, without being able to actually physically see your computer, I'd have to say you're ****ed.

Re: Errrr....

....do you have any icons on your desktop?

if not, do the usual ctrl alt del, and then under the "application" tab, press "New Task" and type in "explorer".... pretty stupid idea but it might work

No...not even a start bar on the bottom.

I shall try.

And edit this with a response.

EDIT: Ok, so I dont know directories, and only typed in "explorer" and it said it cant find it. And that process is missing too. (meaning it isnt running)

Well, without being able to actually see your computer I'd say you really are basically ****ed. Your best bet is probably just to try and reinstall Windows, hopefully you backed up all of your important data.
