Xbox Live Accounts Will Carry Over to Xbox 360

This is from the IGN guide on everything Xbox 360:
Quote:

Microsoft has not released a price point for new Xbox Live subscribers on 360, but they have stated that all current subscribers will carry over to the new console. I'll state that again for emphasis: Current Xbox Live subscribers will automatically have access to Live on 360 at no added cost.
So, for whoever said they aren't carrying over, they are.

This is better than having to create new accounts for new costs but it still doesn't resolve the issue of how they're going to compete with Nintendo's free internet services for DS and Revolution.

"There are two tiers of Live service on Xbox 360. The silver tier is free and includes access to the Marketplace, with gamer profiles, voice and text messaging, video messages from gold members, and some massive multiplayer online games. The gold level is paid and includes all of the silver functionality along with online tournaments, video chat, multiplayer gaming, and Live special events."

And there you have it.

and some massive multiplayer online games.
People aren't going to want some free gaming. They want all. And I'll bet my left arm that all the critically acclaimed online games will be on the Gold Tier. Don't let yourself be victimized by clever marketing. Show Microsoft that you want everything free by boycotting their Live service until they cave in.

Honestly, there probably wont be much to compete with in that area, thier competition in the online devision doenst look like it'll be from nintendo. I see nintendo's online if there is much of one, being more like PS2's is now. i dont expect nintendo to pay for servers to host a big service for free when they dont believe in online gaming and still dont think people want it, nor think its profitable.

DS is free, but it's a handheld, what did you expect? Revolution has not been mentioned. I'd expect there to be a fee, because it's the only way you might ever think of making a profit.

Null, you have way too much faith in Sony. You act like they had any more to offer for online gaming this gen than Nintendo. MS was the only one who cared, Sony and Nintendo half-assed it and it showed. The only reason PS2 has more online titles is because they have more 3rd party support.

As for MS, this is a smart thing to do, but it will piss me off. Most of the Xbox Live names will be used up by Silver memberships. So you go to get a name, and a non-paying person already has it. I'd give them access to Live, but reserve gamertags to Gold members.

MS got smart, and that's why silver exists. This way, if they sell downloadable content, which is getting more abused by the day, it is available to everyone, not just subscribers. You can also go into the marketplace and buy virtual clothes! Ok, so the marketplace is the most retarded idea ever. Anyway... you can also play MMORPGs, games that require their own fee, such as PSO.

Then they give the real service to paying customers.

So... since my account is transferring over, does that mean I can renew, and not buy a 360, and I'll keep my account for 3 years from now when I buy one out of a bargain bin?

you seem to get this weird notion that i actually have faith in ANY of them.

i never even mentioned sony. exept in the comment that i believe thats the online we're going to get from nintendo IMO. which if i thought that online was great, then i'd be happy about nintendos plans.

The fact that i dont like the direction nintendo is going online should tell you something about how i feel about sonys current online.
