very interesting...but what kind of hardware would be able to read this format? does it even exist yet?

I actually made a massive argument on this format war in my History and Theory of Technology course. It got me a really good mark.

I am relieved they have merged. Very relieved.

Sounds interesting...

One question... Why is it in the GC channel?

The big question is, what does this news mean for PlayStation 3, which is scheduled to release sometime next year? The very probable answer is that the next-generation machine will drop Sony's announced Blu-ray drive in favor of hardware that instead plays this new, still-announced format compromise.
Matt-IGN Translation: OMG SONY DOOMED!?!?

This sounds like its good all around. This way nobody will get screwed by going with the wrong format.

Whats going to happen to all the thousands of dollar Blu-Ray drives already out in Japan? Go into a museum?

Re: Blu-ray and HD-DVD Join Forces

I still don't understand why it's in the Gamecube channel..

And Sony is not doomed because of this. They won't have to drop any type if they can work in having 2 lasers in the drive. 1 for reading HD-DVD (for PS2 backwards capability) and one for Blu-Ray, then if they go for this new medium, they can find a way to have the HD-DVD laser read the disc structure and the Blu-Ray laser read the layering software technology. Or vice versa, whatever the agreement would be.

Re: Blu-ray and HD-DVD Join Forces

I think they should just figure out a standard for this generation and stick with it, not use 2 lasers which would increase cost and just be a waste once a format is actually chosen.

how do you think backwards compatibility works?

Generally. Keep all the old hardware and it'll work; it was Sony's plan.

But I believe it was HD-DVD and NEC that developed a laser that can read red and blue-laser discs.
