Phantasy Star Offline?

Quote:

"I'm hoping that the GameCube version will [release] at the same time in all countries, although it really depends on when Nintendo is going to launch its online services ... There are other technical problems as well, but that's what I'm aiming for. PSO is designed to be an online game, although there is a chance the game will come out before online [play through a GameCube] is ready.

"You can play with four players as split-screen, so there is a possibility for the game to come out first and people will still be able to play multi-player without the online service. I'm trying very hard to talk to Nintendo so that the modem will come out the same time as the game."

It happened in a recent interview.

Wow, that would suck ass

GameMaster 03-18-2002 04:59 PM

Another Quake 64

aww man, that would be a waste of a game with some potential, why would they ever do that, i mean, how hard is it to set up a frikking online plan.

Here's the simplified version to my original post.

"PSO is designed to be an online game, although there is a chance the game will come out before online [play through a GameCube] is ready."

Translation: PSO will be designed with online in mind, but if thing don't go as they hope, they might release it before the modem it's ready. You won't be able to play online until the modem arrives, but that does not mean PSO won't have the functionality.

That is exactly why they made the following comment.

"I'm trying very hard to talk to Nintendo so that the modem will come out the same time as the game"

So BlueFire and Co, I hope that relieves you all a bit. :)

PS: This is all a big misunstanding, and as usual, those trigger-happy clowns at PGC are at fault for firing the wrong message(that's begining to piss me off too, it's always them).

That certainly is a relief.

Dreal... the game will be advertized and reviewed as an offline game if Nintendo doesn't get the modem out on time... when they do get the modem out, the Gamecube version will only communicate with the Gamecube version... so one of 3 things will happen:

1) Sega will have to re-do it's advertizing campaing for the game once the modem is released.

2) People will take the bad scores to heart, and not go out and buy the game. Which would ultimatly mean Gamecube will have the smallest online community

3) The game itself will be forced into a delay

D-realJos 03-19-2002 03:40 PM

BJW, of all the things you stated, no.3 is the most likely.

another closely related possibility is:

Even after delaying the game so it comes out the same time as the modem, it's still possible for Sega to release the game a bit ahead(usually, if a game is done, publishers want to release it ASAP).

Going that route, Sega most definitely will advertise the game's online capabilities, making it clear that the modem is just around the corner. To execute that, they'll need accurate dates though. (that why Sega really need some feedback from Nintendo, about when the modem will be available)

on a different note...

It's also easy to see Nintendo as the bad one here, because they have Sega in the dark. But knowing N, their hardware must be of assured quality, and function correctly. It would be worst to give Sega a date, then before you know it, Sega is in hot water with an online game and a modem that will be delayed to who knows when. I believe that is the case, and rather than to blame either Sega or Nintendo, I realize that things will happen only when time permits them to. So good luck to them both.

I wouldn't mind having to wait a little longer for the online capabilities.Since I've never played the game. And I want to try the single mode first. I'm considering to buy it when it comes out. So, I can wait. I can't find the DC version in the stores. So, I'll wait for the GC version.

I'm certainly feeling smart for not buying Ver. 2 for the dreamcast, a new dungeon should be worth the time. And I do hope they decide to go with number 3.

This is really bitchy. I have played Phantasy Star and it suxz without the Online play. Whats the point of it being a Gamecube exclusive if it isn't even online?

Hmm well we have our most recent example.. Look at Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 for PlayStation 2

The game features online play
-it was an adverised feature
-it was used in reviews
-it wasn't delayed

but almost 6 months after it's release you really can't go online with that game. The same could.. I'm not saying it will.. but could happen with PSO

But that's TOTALLY different...

1) PSO is meant to be played online... Playing online is the whole purpose of the game... In Tony Hawk, online play is just an extra feature.

2) THPS3 could officially go online with a USB modem... unless Gamecube gets some kind of Third party modem, chances are that it will be impossible to play online.

What he said... so many people seem to think you can't access THPS3's online features yet when you can get online with any basic USB modem... and supposidly it's really fun and goodies :D

Although I never played it online...

Really I think they should just delay the game until the modem stuff is out and not release it when you can't even get online yet... Otherwise some people will be like "Oh this game blows!" and return it or it might get bad reviews blah de blah... I think someone said that already though... infact maybe it was Justin... :D *scrolls down*..... why yes, it was him... good job, Justin... :sneaky:

I don't really care though cuz I won't be buying the game... if I wanted phantasy star online, I would have bought it when I owned a dreamcast :p
