Police Break in to Find Home-Alone Hamster

BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) -- A German man who went on holiday left his stereo and lights on so that his pet hamster would not feel lonely in the empty apartment, a police spokesman said on Monday after breaking into the home over fears the man may have died.

The spokesman for police in Bremen said police broke open the door after being alerted by neighbors that loud music was playing nonstop for five days and the lights were left on. No one answered the door when they knocked, police said.

"There was a fear the occupant might have been disabled or dead," a police spokesman said. "All we found was a pet hamster. The occupant was away on holiday. A friend of his arrived and said he left the music on so the hamster wouldn't feel lonely."

The spokesman said the friend of the occupant, who is still on holiday and not reachable, told police she visited every few days to feed the golden hamster food and provide water. She promised to turn the music down and come by more often.
Instead of playing the music loudly, the owner could've moved the stereo and hamster closer together so the neighbors would't have noticed. I applaud the man's good intentions though. Anyone who is kind to pets is a friend in my book.

Oh man, Hamsters are awesome.

Growing up, I always had one.

And they were all awesome.

One we had in a medium sized metal cage, that goes triangular at the top (like the roof of a house) and if you put celery up there, it would climb up, hang on, and eat it, then drop down.

Then another one, we bought it a super huge plastic cage. It has tubes going left and right, and even up, so it has an upstairs, and everything. It even had a frigging room for a bathroom. (Strangely enough, it knew where to go).

But this guy was clever. There was a plastic wheel, and the whole thing was maybe a foot and a bit in width. So he would go underneath the plastic running wheel, and slowly climb up the outside until he got to the top of the wheel. Then, he would streth across, and grap onto the edge of the top part of the cage. He would dangle there, with his front paws, and chew. He was trying to escape. He chewed it so low after a while, we had to put rocks on the top to weigh the metal cover down over the big hole he chewed, because if we didnt, he would squeeze out.

*Nostalgia*

My sister has one. Constantly escapes. Always ends up wedged behind my bookcase.

Just got old I think... we've had him for 2 and a bit more years. My sister is still bawling her eyes out wherelse my dad has said, "Let's go and get another one on Monday!"

He was against of us getting a pet in the first place but now he's addicted (to cleaning the cages).

Sorry for your loss. They rarely live past two.

I always wanted a rat but I don't think I could deal with the short lifespan. Don't take death well. Especially after having to bury my budgie of 8 years. I still subconsciously make parakeet noises to myself.
