Nintendo making the big $$$ again...

I read this at gamespot today...

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/11...s_6114085.html

And for those of you too lazy to click the link...

"TOKYO--According to Reuters and Mainichi Interactive, Nintendo has announced that it is raising its sales forecast for the DS to five million units for the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2005. The company has not changed its outlook for the handheld's software sales, which is holding steady at 15 million copies.

This will be the second time that Nintendo has raised its sales estimates for the DS. Earlier this month, Nintendo increased its forecast for the DS from 3.5 to 4 million units. The handheld has been in massive demand in Japan where preorders have reached 2 million units, double the company's initial expectations. The handheld had a successful launch in America last week, and it will be released in Japan this Thursday.

In Tokyo, Nintendo is currently holding last minute promotions in the streets of the city's commercial districts, giving passers-by a chance to try out the handheld.

Nintendo also raised its sales estimate for the Game Boy Advance from 14 million to 16 million units, of which 15 million units are the GBA SP model.

Likewise, the forecast for GBA software sales has also been raised from 70 million to 77 million units. In addition, the company revealed that its Famicom Mini series shipped a total of 4.23 units in Japan; and its latest Pokemon title, Pokemon Emerald, has sold over 1 million units.

With sales of GBA games going smoothly and the DS handheld units expected to remain in high demand throughout the next few months, Nintendo has raised its net profit estimate for FY2005 from 84 billion yen ($817 million) to 90 billion yen ($875 million), nearly triple the profit from last year. The fiscal year ends March 31, 2005. "

Triple the profit this year over last year? 875 Million dollar profits? I dont know about everyone else, but that sounds DAMN good. So all of you saying Nintendo would be better off it they went multiplatform and blah blah blah and all of that crap, you tell me Nintendo would make more money than that if they went multiplatform. I simply dont believe it. Sounds to me like their doing great just the way they are, because they make smart busniess moves. I'll admit, its not always exactly what we as the consumer want, but its certaintly working for them. So I dont want to hear any more utter garbage about nintendo Ditching their consoles and going multiplatform, because it simply isnt going to happen.

I'll be one owner of a DS hopefully this holidays. A fresh concept rather then just a standard console/handheld system. Although Nintendo is guaranteed to lose a small portion of the handheld market, who cares? Any new competition takes a chunk away from anything. When MS entered the market, Nintendo and Sony lost a chunk.

Hopefully Nintendo doesn't rush out its next Gameboy handheld in a few years. Stick to the DS for about 5-7 years, let it run its course then move on. But in those years, please add a joystick to the DS. It's not that hard to do.

Well don't underestimate the PSP. I think the 'chunk' may turn out to be very big.

I wish Nintendo would do a bit better with the GCN. :(

Oh but 2 million DS in Japan? w0000000000000T! :D

Nintendo has sold half a million DS systems. "As additional shipments are rushed to stores by this weekend to meet the demand, Nintendo expects to sell 1 million Nintendo DS units in North America alone by the end of 2004 – a mark that took Apple’s iPod 19 months to achieve."

" Nintendo sold more than 800,000 Game Boy Advance and Game Boy® Advance SP units during the past week."

"Nintendo GameCube™ also posted impressive numbers. The special bundle of a Nintendo GameCube and a Mario Kart®: Double Dash!!™ game has sold more than 250,000 units since its introduction in mid-November."

:)

I love how Nintendo tries to impress it's readers by comparing it's sales to that of the iPod, lol.

When Psx enterd Nintendo lost a big chunk, and Sega... well. :( I doubt that will happen here though. But I doubted it then too... we'll just have to see :)

For me, right now there isn't a game good enough out (or coming out) to justify me buying a DS yet. I'd be better off getting a GBA:SP now to be honest.

True, but remember that you can play every AGB game on the DS (only singleplayer though). So economily it would be wiser to get a DS. :D Plus, the DS is just much cooler in public.. you can chat with people, multiplayer (without seeing them if you want)....

Well, I don't have to tell this, you know what the DS is. :p

It's just that I wouldn't buy an AGB SP now... :)
