Opinion: Movies are out, TV is in?

Alright, I'm just curious so I threw up a poll for the lazy...but actual feedback would really be appreciated.

I never thought I'd say this (but I am relatively young), but right now I have way more TV shows on my to-watch list than movies. At this point in time I am following more TV shows than I ever have in my entire life. It seems like there is a ton of quality in television right now, with a ton of good shows currently airing or just ended.

Meanwhile, in Hollywood, we have the same shit different CGI. More fucking comic book movies, more Transformers, more of the same Academy Award winning "edgy" faux bullshit films that are shot in shades of blue and gray with an overly dramatic film score. Hollywood is currently turning out shit to good films at about a 1 to 10 ratio.

On the other hand...TV is turning out edgy, exhilarating adventures, good comedy, and drama that keeps you glued to your seat week to week.

I dunno, I love movies and I still see one or two movies in theaters weekly or bi-weekly, but right now if I had to take my TV or the Cinema to a desert island I'd go TV.

Thoughts?

I think it goes back, and forth. TV can offer something movies can't especially when it comes to dramas that can fully develop plots and characters and not squeeze everything into 2 hours.

There is still something about movies, that make em special when done right

The thing is, his argument is if movies are really doing it right now. I have a hard time making myself go to a movie theatre or even downloading a new movie cause I don't feel a drive to see them.

I think you're probably right, currently. I definitely find myself amassing many more hours watching TV shows these days than movies. I'm not sure I've seen more than one or two movies so far this year. I was just reading an article about how this is potentially the worst crop of summer movies, and potentially the worst Oscar crop as well.

That said, I think a very well executed 90-120 minute film can still retain more power than an entire series. I may love the Wire, but there are some undoubtedly forgettable moments there. A great film can be more than that. There just may be less of them these days.

I guess...A different format is a different format, but I think the premium channels (HBO/Showtime) pushed the boundaries in the late 90's, and that's why we're seeing better TV on AMC/FX, etc.

Game of Thrones?

There's a ton of great TV shows on the air.
And they run the gauntlet of quality and genres.

That said, there's still something about a big blockbuster movie that puts it above a TV show for me.

Add to that list:

Modern Family
Boardwalk Empire
Dr. Who
Supernatural
Deadliest Catch (best reality TV show ever)

And lets not forget the recently completed Battlestar Galactica that will go down as the greatest television show of all time.

That shit is on my to-watch list, so no worries.

I'm currently working through Dexter, which has been long overdue. And damn...

Breaking Bad is awesome. I am still behind on Weeds which I followed through season 3. My friends has me watching House/Bones, which is fine but I did give up on House post-season 3.

My comedy rotation includes Archer, South Park, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and a backlog of Simpsons episodes. Oh and Bob's Burgers and Modern Family. I'm behind (or I should say, WTF is going on) in The Office, I need to watch 30 Rock, Community and Parks and Recreation.

There is Season 2 of The Walking Dead. I am currently following Justified which is awesome FX-western drama. I am going to follow Wilfred but currently the show is pretty hit and miss for me.

Dr. Who is on my to-watch, along with Supernatural and recently I have taken some interest in Battlestar Galactica. That is such an epic series though that I want to give it the proper time. And I need to be in the mood.

I have Rome and Mad Men on my queue, along with about 20 other shows. And this is excluding reality TV stuff that I love (mostly food network) like Chopped and Iron Chef America.

And then there is my guilty pleasure, Chuck...which is supposedly rounding out it's last 13 episodes.

Add to the list re-runs of Futurama and Seinfeld, new episodes of the Tosh.0 and the Daily Show, and there is no reason to not watch TV.

And I haven't even tapped into the whole vampire bullshit craze, the old Marvel/DC animated cartoons I want to revisit someday, and rewatching shows I really like.

Again, I maintain....that RIGHT NOW, TV blows THE SHIT out of cinema. Ain't no way cinema can keep up in character and story development.

Certainly a movie could make a bigger impact than any television show...movies can be poignant and powerful, and they are often very artistic in ways that TV simply cannot be.

If you want a good comedy to watch with little commitment I'd recommend Better Off Ted. That show didn't get enough love and got canceled after two seasons. Believe it was the only comedy to ever get me to actually laugh out loud at least once each ep.

Not at all. TV series are more long than movies, take many time to complete. Some TV series like Breaking Bad, Dexter and Prison Break are cool.
