Mumford & Sons - White Blank Page

This is simply amazing:

Mumford and Sons are amazing. I've been into them since I heard Little Lion Man last year.

This is for me the music of 2010. I had their alum on mp3 when I was alone in the Norwegian nature. Absolutely gorgeous.

A friend saw them live before they became big. I envy him.

I'm prepared for any flak you guys want to dish out, but I kind of agree with the Pitchfork review of their album Sigh No More. Their whole act is just a bit too polished and contrived to really make any connection with me. The more I hear Little Lion Man on the radio, the more I feel disconnected...and if my man Dylan taught me anything, that is not how folk music is supposed to work.

That depends on how you want to view the sound and the genre of music. I think they're only called 'folk rock' because they have similar styles to 'folk' artists, but that doesn't really mean folk music is any different than any other genre of music.

If you're making a rock album, you need to connect to the people who listen to rock music, same with rap, hip hop etc.

Just because it's in the 'folk' genre of music, doesn't really mean it should have to be rough, uncut, and not produced in the same way other bands are produced. It would seem a little weird for you to go out of your way not to make the best possible sounding record that you can make, for the money you have. If that means you're in the folk genre, but your record will be perfectly polished, I personally don't see anything wrong with that. "Folk music" now is just more of a sound. If it has acoustic guitars, and the rhythm changes a no less than 3 times in the song, then it's considered 'folk' music. Personally, I think 90% of what's called 'folk music' these days is 'pop'.

For the record, I'm not harping on you, I'm just ranting.

Yo yo, I hear that. No hate here, and I know you are keeping the discussion civil. You made a good point too. Obviously music is HIGHLY SUBJECTIVE. The guys at Pitchfork are assholes 87% of the time anyway, so it was odd of me to reference them.

On a tangential note, the White Stripes broke up. Not sure if that is a good thing in a "taking the high road" kind of way, but man did they have some sweet albums.

The White Stripes had a bunch of good albums. In fact, I personally think all of their albums are winners. I'm a big fan of Jack White, nothing he can do in my eyes will be wrong. I'm okay with the White Stripes being done, Jack's got too many other things going on as it is, and they're all equally as good, or better than the White Stripes. In my opinion, anyways.
