Wow, 6 CDs or 1 DVD. Perhaps I'll go for the DVD then.
Do we know yet what Half Life 1: Source is??? Some remake of Half-Life???

Re: Half Life 2 Package Details!

Hey! I want HL1:Source, do I have to buy a DVD drive for that? No fair!

Guess I'm getting the standard edition...

Re: Half Life 2 Package Details!

you can get a DVD drive for under 30. and you'll prolly be able to download the HL1 source if you cant already.

Re: Half Life 2 Package Details!

HL: Source is a partial remake of Half Life. Valve didn't take as much time porting it to the Source engine as they did with Counterstrike Source which is a full blown redux around Source. HL Source is more of a straight port. It gets the bells and whistles graphics but some things don't look as great as HL2 which is understandable. But I wanna play HL: Source to see how well it looks.

And Bube, you can just get the Silver version off Steam if you want HL:Source. You won't get a CD/DVD but you can have those games.

Hm I'm afraid Steam doesn't deliver in Turkey? Or do they?

Re: Half Life 2 Package Details!

Steam works here, I don't know if they sell though. I used to play CS 1.6 with my 56k, but after buying a new computer, and a DSL connection, Steam couldn't update itself. Or maybe it was because I installed it during the CS:Source preload period.

Ahh, whatever, I won't pay money to download a game off the internet. I'll probably pay, and won't be able to download it... I hate Steam...

And getting a DVD drive just isn't worth it. I'll pay 30$ to play a game I've played before (and hated, I should add) with better graphics.

It's just Half Life 1 running on the Half Life 2 engine. I'm fairly sure all you're going to get is physics improvements, reflection improvements, and light/shadow improvements. I've been running the HL1 maps on the old HL2 beta that leaked for a while now. It'll be cool. I'll definitely be buying the Collector's package.

well, you have to start reconizing a trend here man. havnt you noticed the games now starting to release 2 versions? DVD, or a pack of CD's? the switch is happening, it wont be too long before games come out on DVD only,
so IMO, a DVD drive that doesnt cost much is very much worth it.

i get angry when i see people telling developers to release games on the CD format, theres no reason why anyone shouldnt be able to get a DVD drive now. and theres no reason to get games to install on a computer that have 6+ CD's.

i have the DVD version of UT 04, my friend bought the CD version. i was reformating his comptuer for him, and i had to reinstall that game. OMG! what a pain to keep switching CD's, took like 15min. my DVD version, i just put it in, takes a min to install and im done.

Steam can deliver anywhere in the world AFAIK since its all run off of servers and it can contact anywhere it feels to download data.

And Steam is free to download. It's just that to play MOST games (not all because there is a free game you can get off Steam - Codename Gordon) you have to pay which is obvious.

But overall, I've had no real issues with Steam. They have really good servers that can handle a ton of bandwidth.

Re: Half Life 2 Package Details!

I'm not much of a PC gamer, although I've got a pretty good PC, so I just don't see the reason to buy a DVD player for faster installs, and a remake of HL. If it came with the CD version, I would be happy. And even though I do want it, I won't go out and buy a DVD drive for it.

And Steam, IMO, is the tool of the devil. The endless updates are a total pain. Why not put the updates into an optional installation package, manually downloaded? Do I have to wait hours for the stupid program to find an empty slot to connect to?

Give me the boxes, CDs, cash, cashiers and reciepts over downloads any day. It's been so long since I purchased a game off the shelf myself. Ahhh, the smell of a new game being opened, bought from the store with real money...

Usually you don't have to wait for a slot to open. The only time you may have to wait is if there is a very large update that takes alot of bandwidth. The only times i've seen Steam make you wait was when they started pre-loads for HL2. Each person wanting about 900megs of stuff off the server can make you wait. But typically updates are far less then it and typically causes no waits because their servers are very large and can handle alot. I think Gabe mentioned that with an expensive call, he can get bandwidth to like 14 or 16 gbps (thats gigabytes (or gigabits?) per second). But it hasn't had ot happen yet but they can at the flip of a switch.

Re: Half Life 2 Package Details!

After firing an email to Gabe Newell last night asking about which package Ati voucher owners will get, I got a reply from Steam support saying

Hello,

ATI key holders will receive the bronze package. There is a plan to allow for upgrades in packages, but pricing has not yet been announced.

So I hope upgrading to Silver will only cost like $10 or so because I'll be all over it. And if Gold isn't that much more expensive, I'll go for that instead of Silver. *waits for pricing announcement :D *

Re: Half Life 2 Package Details!

Well, Im just glad ive done all the Pre-loading so hopefully I wont have to spend all that time installing the 6 CD's.

That and my CD-rom drive sometimes likes to act up during installations.

EDIT:

Welp, some serious news now...read it.

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/ha...s_6109232.html

I would be estatic about this news, but I just pre-ordered the fugging retail version a week ago. Valve has totally screwed those of us who have allready pre-ordered over. What are we suppoused to do while the rest of the world is playing CS:S? Just sit here and wait for the retail huh?

And who knows when that will come. After this move by valve, I just see vevendi pushing this court case thing as much as they possibly can. I honestly dont even see it coming out this year now. Makes me sick just thinking about it.

Re: Half Life 2 Package Details!

Well, I decided to listen to the people who like Steam, and installed it. The updates aren't bad as I remembered, and I downloaded Codename Gordon in quite a short time. But I couldn't remember my old username ( :banghead: ), so I couldn't get my already registered Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat and the others to register again :(. Then I found a way around it...

Then I found my old username and password... :D

But still, I'm not ready to download 6GBs off Steam. I'm still buying it off the shelf. When I format, I'll have to download it all over again... :banghead:

You don't have to pre-load HL2 ;)

Re: Half Life 2 Package Details!

Doesn't Steam download the game after you buy it? At least some neccesary parts of it? If I'm wrong, then I'm going to need a pretty in-depth explanation of buying games off Steam. And if I'm convinced, I might actually buy something :)...

Re: Half Life 2 Package Details!

Oops. I may have read it wrong. Are you gonna buy and download off steam? I think at first I read it was on the shelf.

But if you are buying off Steam, go ahead and preload the game. After its done preloading, if you have a DVD Burner, put the Half Life2 gcf files onto a DVD and store it. If you have a CD Burner, put some files on 1 cd, some on another. Then, if you ever have to reformat, you don't have to redownload over 2 gigs of data (compressed)
