Sony Loses Patent Suit on Dual Shock Controller

Link.

Yesterday a jury found Sony guilty of violating 16 patent claims of Immersion Corporation, and awarded the company $82 million in damages.
Great news for the Xbox.

I thought Sony made the "Dual shock" controller...Im confused with this.

And hows it good for the Xbox? They had to pay money too.

Did you actually read the article dude? I guess not because it states that Microsoft owns 10% shares in Immersion meaning that any money gained by immersion will also gain microsoft money. If the suit goes through, all PS2's for sale containing a Dual Shock 2 controller will need to be pulled off the shelves and that would be around holiday time which would take Sony out of the competition. You didnt read that?

Haha...oops...i get confused easily when reading long articles in small print. My mistake.

But this shall suck major testicles for Sony and the Playstation methinks.

This is not good. Sony is screwed unless they either pay or come up with something new. Imagine if Sony has to go back to the original controller. Wait, the lawsuit is only for the rumble part right?

It would also be funny if Immersion tried to sue Nintendo and Nintendo did bring up the Rumble Pack patent thing.

This certainly puts an interesting twist on things. With no further comments, I hereby declare Nintendo the winner of the Winter Holiday Video Game Battle.

Well, its just Dual Shock I guess. Not sure about just 1 rumble "thing", since only Sony got sued.

I don't want to sound like I'm bashing nintendo here, but what is there coming out for GCN this holiday season? Besides Metroid Prime 2 I'm not aware of any other major titles releasing before xmas on GCN. Am I missing something? I want Santa to leave me a GCN game under the tree for once.

I'm not sure that's necessarily true. Depending on the terms of the suit, Sony may instead be required to pay royalties to Immersion for the sale of every item containing a Dual Shock 2. That would also really suck but not nearly as much as pulling PS2s off the shelves.

This is nothing........ PS3 will be out soon and if anything they can use their own rumble technology. And if their appeal were to result in an injunction, than Sony just has to make their own rumble technology. Not necesserily the controller.

I wouldn't mind playing without SHOCK for awhile. As long as I have 2 analog sticks.

Re: Sony Loses Patent Suit on Dual Shock Controller

well then i should get a PS2 before it goes off the shelves shouldn't I?

...this totally sucks for sony! and immersion is a bunch of f*ckin cheap asses...it's not like they were losing money, they just weren't making as much as they would be if sony was liscensed. greedy ass people.

Null 03-27-2005 05:11 PM

Re: Sony Loses Patent Suit on Dual Shock Controller

They wont go off the shelves. sony will appeal it, but at the very worse, sony will just be paying royalties for each one they sell.

makes ya wonder about nintendo tho, immersion already sued MS, and ms settled and then bought stock in them. then they went after sony.

Re: Sony Loses Patent Suit on Dual Shock Controller

I have never heard of Immersion before. In any case, I'm pretty sure Nintendo is safe, considering they had the rumble pak way before.

Maybe nintendo should attack Immersion and bring their greedy asses down?

In any case, I already own a PS2, and 4 dual shock 2 controllers... no need for any more hardware from Sony, until PS3.

ANd I'm pretty sure the PS3's IMS DualShock3 technology is Sony patented.

either nintendo falls into the same catagory or thiers is different way of doing it.
because if what your saying, nintendo did it before them but its the same, then the suits with sony and MS wouldnt of applied because if the patent didnt belong to immersion and they wouldnt of had a case.

Was Sony aware of this scandal they were taking part in when creating the Dual Shock Controller?

I want one of those new, slim PS2s. I better grab one soon.

Re: Sony Loses Patent Suit on Dual Shock Controller

Nintendo is either letting Immersion do their dirty work for them or doesn't have a case. They wouldn't let something like this slip through their fingers if they had a case.

It could be that Nintendo is just waiting for Immersion to win the battle completely before it strikes at Immersion too. Because if one court battle can be ruled against Sony without Nintendo paying a single attorney fee, what could be better?

Null 03-28-2005 06:12 PM

Re: Sony Loses Patent Suit on Dual Shock Controller

i doubt nintendo has a case against them, because im SURE either MS or Sony woulda been smart enough in court to say hey, immersion doesnt even own this patent, nintendo does. that woulda ended immersions case on the spot.

so as i said, its either 1 of 2 things, either nintendos tech is totally different then the stuff immersion is suing over, or its simular and immersion can sue nintendo next.
