Re: Star Wars DVDs

I like Star Wars.....but im not a SW freak. Like, i like the movies, and think they are the most creative movies ever made. ( I mean come on, what other series do you know that starts at #4?)

But I want them to make more. But i know they wont, and if they do, they will either be love stories, or all cutesie wootsey, like Jar-Jar.....stupid Lucas, ruining Star Wars.

I like the SW games though, especially the ones for N64 like Rogue Squadron. The ones where you fly the plane dealies. woot.

I wont be buying it, but im not opposed to anyone who wishes to buy it.

thats fine. PC handles over twice as many people online. runs smoother with updates and mods. muhahhahaa.

:)

as for Star wars DVD, i was lookin foward to it untill the moron said he wont be releasing the originals, but instead the updated versions which suck. then they ruined it more by putting anakins face on darth vadar when his mask explodes or whatever, and elsewhere.

unless its the originals i wont be getting it.

My aunt will definitely be getting me this for Christmas.

And yes, they fight on a volcano... Why do you think Anakin has to be in that protective body suit and his face was all messed up as Darth Vader? VOLCANO.

Acid.
Lepracy.
Syphylis.
Flesh eating virus.
Hut.
Chewbacca.
Self mutalation.

Whos to say, we will see whos right.

The cause of the Vader suit is severe damage from a volcano related accident as Joeiss said. People have known that for years but I don't know if that's because George said something about it or someone near George leaked the detail? Still doesn't answer why his voice becomes so low and evil sounding...perhaps it's a synthetic voice or his normal voice is assisted by some gadget. It's been a while since I've seen Return of the Jedi, does Vader's voice sound different when he takes off the helmet? :vader:

Re: Star Wars DVDs

Alright. I picked up the DVDs earlier today right after school and have been watching all three back to back to back until now. Apparently not many people here know of the new changes to the movies, so I'll list them and my thoughts on them.

Star War: Episode IV: A New Hope

-Removing the Vasoline Wasn't Enough
Lucas enhanced the digital landspeeder Luke and Co. ride into Mos Eisley a bit. It looks better, so no complaints.

- The Infamous "Greedo Shirts First" Scene
For those not in the know: in the original Star War: Episode IV: A New Hope (the original classic unaltered version), Han shot Greedo in the Mos Eisley cantina before Greedo was able to do anything. In the Special Editions, George Lucas added in Greedo shooting at Han (and missing, obviously) before Han shoots Greedo.

Although Greedo still shoots first in the DVDs, Lucas has made Han jerk to the side to make the miss more believable...or something. While I don't really care who shoots first, the jerky movement of Han to the side just really doesn't look right.

- Extra Jabba Scene
Lucas has enhanced the digital model of Jabba in the SE scene to better match the Jabba from Episode I and look a bit more like the puppet Jabba in RotJ. Jabba looks a lot better. Han's movement when he steps on Jabba's tail also looks a bit better.

- Obi-Wan Can't Read English!
Any and all English text in the film (mostly in the scene where Obi-Wan is shutting down the force fields) have been changed into Aurebesh (Star Wars language) to fit the other movies. Gotta dig continuity.

- Is It White? Blue? What?
The lightsabers in ANH have been enhanced. Although they aren't perfect, they are much brighter and more defined than they originally were. Great improvement. However, is it just me or did Luke's lightsaber in the remote training scene turn lightish green?

Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Striles Back

- Well Now the Shadows of the Empire Prologue is Ruined!
The Emperor during the short conversation between Vader and Palpatine in ESB was originally played by some guy other than Ian McDirmiad, who plays Palpatine in every other Star Wars movie (except ANH, where Palpatine never shows up). They replaced the original ESB guy with Ian, which is an improvement in my opinion (continuity and all). However, they also changed the Emperor's dialogue significantly. Originally, I always got the impression that Vader already knew Luke was his son and alive, etc. Now it seems more like the Emperor is telling Vader who Luke is. I don't really get why it was changed this way....

- If He's A Clone, Why Does He Sound Different?
They replaced Boba Fett's original voice with Temuera Morrison, who plays Jango Fett in the prequels. Makes sense to me. I have no problem with it.

- Aaaaaaaaahhhhh! Er...is that right?
Originally, when Luke jumped off that platform away from Darth Vader, he just fell without a noise. In the SE, Lucas added in the scream from the Emperor in RotJ to make it seem less like Luke was trying to commit suicide. The scream is gone now.

Star Wars: Episode VI: The Return of the Jedi

- Wormtongue Had to Shave His Eyebrows, Too
Vader's eyebrows have been removed from his face when Luke takes his helmet off. Being burned in a lake of lava does that.

- The Ewoks Are No Longer The Most Despised Creatures In The Original Trilogy (and other celebration stuff)
They added in Naboo during the celebration scene near the end. Jar Jar screams out, "Wesa free!" I'm not kidding. I personally think its a neat tie in to the prequels, but that's just me.

They also stuck in the Jedi Temple in the Coruscant scene.

- The Forgotten Ghost Scene
In the original and SE versions of the movies, an actor named Sebastian Shaw played Anakin Skywalker for that short scene in the end of the movie that has the ghosts of Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Anakin standing near the celebration (Shaw also plays Anakin after Vader's helemt has been taken off). For the DVDs, Lucas has removed Sebastian and inserted Hayden Christensen, the guy who plays Anakin Skywalker in AotC and RotS. I can get the continuity reasons, but its still a little weird seeing Hayden there...

***

That's all the important stuff. There's probably some smaller enhancement that I might have missed (like the Jabba or landspeeder ones), but nothing important.

*is still looking for a window of oppurtunity to proclaim that Ewoks and the prequels and the SE aren't as bad as most people make them out to be*

I love these movies!! As you can imagine, being the resident SW freak, I bought them at Best Buy when they opened at midnight to sell them. And yes, I proceeded to go home and watch all three in a row. I then slept for about an hour, got up, went to class, and promptly fell asleep. Lol.

May 19th can't come fast enough!!

Re: Star Wars DVDs

I thought that was funny.

I think the dvds sound cool ( i didn't realize they were enhancing so much). I have seen the trilogy once but I fell asleep through part of it. I'm hoping someone I know will pick the DVDs up so I can watch them.

Re: Star Wars DVDs

i picked it up already :D, its great, amazing remastering, both visually and audio wise. I watched a new hope yesterday, planning to watch the empire strikes back tonight, theres also a preview of Ep. 3 the game on the bonus disk, this one looks as if it may actually kick ass....unlike the other ones. + it has a demo of star wars: battle front demo for the xbox (just stick it in your xbox). i'll tell more after i see Ep. V.

Ha..that probably ruins the trilogy. They have to add Jar Jar in at the end...*shakes head*..well I guess it would make sense because of the prequels. And by the way, I never despised the Ewoks. They weren't annoying, and they were actually pretty smart. I tried to find out what they were saying when they talked, one time, but I failed miserably.

Re: Star Wars DVDs

Okay, I read the changes list, but im still slightly confused on one thing. When luke takes vaders helmet off...they havent replaced that sebastian shaw with Hayden Christain's head there have they? Because that would be just wrong, IMO.

Ginkasa 09-22-2004 09:20 PM

Re: Star Wars DVDs

No, when Luke takes Vader's helmet off, it is still Sebastian Shaw's head (and voice). The only alteration to that scene is the removal of Sebastian's eyebrows to (assumedly) better fit what happens to Anakin in RotS.

****

On the bonus disc the DVD set, there is a "Making of" documentary of all three films called Star Wars: Empire of Dreams. It is AWESOME. The documentary is two and a half hours long (longer than any of the movies) and covers just about everything from THX-1138 to Episode II. Obviously, most of the time is spent in the making of the Star Wars trilogy; everything else is just kind of glazed over (especially the SE and prequels).

The doc is filled with information. It also includes some deleted dialogue that didn't make it into any version of the films ("And you call yourselves human.") and auditions and stuff.

I really enjoyed it.

Re: Star Wars DVDs

George Lucas apparently said that when a Jedi becomes a spirit, it's in the form of the last time he/she was "pure" or what have you... That being Anakin when he was younger (As in before he becomes Darth Vader, which means when the age he's at when being played by Hayden Christensen in Episode 3)... Not when he was some sort of elderly or middle-aged-ish good Anakin which there never was (The original scene with Sebastian Shaw)...

*shrug*
I read it the other day in some looooong thread on a star wars fanatic message board, so I don't have a link or a direct quote...

I havn't seen the trilogy since the special edition came out on VHS... I never saw the big deal about things people complained about (Ewoks, for example... Or Greedo shooting first in the special edition) I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow hopefully... Yup...

I bought the Special Edition trilogy. I must say I'm very impressed, and it was definitely worth the money.

However, I think that the original trilogy should have been released on DVD as well. I've downloaded Laser Disc rips of the originals so that I can keep those alive too (the ones I've got are DVD quality widescreen - though they haven't been "degrained" so they're not as clean as the Special Edition). It's a shame they'll never officially be released on DVD.
