Battle of the Video Cards
What current top of the line video card do you want? Dont post about how you cant get it, just what you want. Plain and simple:p
Nvidia's GeForce 6800 Ultra ![]() vs Ati's Radeon x800XT ![]() (please ignore toms hardware watermark in images...google images didnt help me on this) But my choice is the x800XT:D |
Re: Battle of the Video Cards
I choose NVidia because I have an NVidia in this old iMac and it has served me well.

Re: Battle of the Video Cards
Why did you choose ATI jonbo?
It's a hard choice for me right now. I really don't care that much seeing as how I won't be buying either cards. I'll just throw my vote for ATI because their cards since after the 8500 have had the best architecture and been the most consistant. I think nVidia has fixed the problems that the 5900 series cards had though. Usually one card pulls ahead of the other but right now both cards are pretty much the same. I have a feeling that the 6800 will be able to push higher numbers later one. I heard that the x800XT is a lot more overclocked already and it doesn't really beat the geforce. |
Re: Battle of the Video Cards
This months PCgamer includes tests from both the the Nvidia's GeForce 6800 Ultra and Ati's Radeon x800XT.
benchmarks Nvidia's GeForce VS Ati's Radeon 3dmark 03 6800 Ultra 11,394 x800XT 11,361 Aquamark3 6800 Ultra score: 57,765 GFX: 8,724 x800XT score:55,320 GFX: 7,854 Quake III 6800 Ultra 368, 330 (fps) x800XT 351, 291(fps) UT 2k3 6800 Ultra 222 FPS x800XT 222 FPS Splinter Cell 6800 Ultra 65 FPS x800XT 63 FPS Halo 6800 Ultra 69 FPS x800XT 63 FPS Far Cry 6800 Ultra 54, 37(fps) x800XT 55, 52(fps) Overall ratings 6800 Ultra 90% x800XT 93% The reson why they liked the x800XT more....becuse it only needs one 12 volt hookup. the downside of the x800XT being the support of DX 9.0c. Id say overall the GeForce 6800 Ultra looks better and I dont have a problem with the requirments(2, 12 volt connectors and a 480 power supply). |
Re: Battle of the Video Cards
doesnt really matter either way with the new ones.
However linux gets buggy with ATI cards so i usually go for nvidia, which has great linux support.. But right now im using a 9600XT, but im also not using a linux at the moment. |
Re: Battle of the Video Cards
I don't know. For me, the initial performance issues are always going to be pretty moot. ATI cards in general have always performed better with AA than the GeForce cards, but not as well with it off. Not to mention that ATI cards generally just render a slightly prettier picture while the GeForce cards provide better framerates. As you can probably tell, I lean towards the ATI cards slightly.
Maybe it won't be the same this coming generation, but it has been for some time. And if it is, you're just going to have to decide what matters more to you. |

ATI, because you get more bang for your Buck, but more importantly, because of Half Life 2 and how it will run better on ATI's because its been designed for them from the ground up.

Re: Battle of the Video Cards
my radeon 9600xt runs like a dream.........
so ati |
Re: Battle of the Video Cards
I love my Radeon 9800. Warcraft III runs like nobody's business.

highly doubtful. HL2 will run same on either ATI or Nvidia. Expecially now that we're quite a bit after the cards HL2 was designed for. HL2 was designed around the 9600XT. |
Re: Battle of the Video Cards
when i first got my nvidia GF2...it was buggy as hell....so i stuck to ATI ever since...now im using a 9500pro...and i couldn't be happier.....well...with this card anyway...i would be happier with a 9800pro :p

A little off topic... Quote:
I am thinking a "SuSe" maybe...though I have not looked into it much yet. *sighs* .. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/ is so much nicer than http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ |

lol. its not really 'ahem.. borrow' with linux man. linux is free. :p you can download it right from thier site. |
Re: Battle of the Video Cards
Actually SUSE is $90.00. They try to guilt you into paying for Linux threatening that development might stop. :p
Anyway.... Seven7, check your private messages about getting a.... *Cough* Trial version*Cough* |

or *cough*download it*cough*cuz its free*cough cough* i've yet to see a linux distro thats pay only. they all have thier pay box sets in stores or free downloads. I downloaded suse 9 (which was my first time downloading one, i usually just bought em) unless your talkin professional only which i think the free download is personal. but i really dont see a difference that you cant fix with seperate downloads anywho. [EDIT] Thier site says Free FTP version of 9.1 will be available for download on June 4th. :) i shall be downloading it then and putting it on instead of 9.0 man i love free things |

But if you got a decent internet connection. downloading is actually quite easy. i never did it because i didnt want to have the hassle so i always bought it in store. after trying the download with 9.0, i wont be going back to buy em anymore. pointless to pay for 9, then have them come out with 9.1 and have to buy again only to have 9.2 come out. For downloading it, you just download a small ISO, burn it to a CD. boot with the CD and it installs just like it were on a CD, except its downloading the files as it goes. |

Maybe I'll wait for the ftp download in June, but thanks though. Bleh ... normally I don't post like this in threads multiple times... |
Re: Battle of the Video Cards

it wasnt a problem when i downloaded 9.0. They got a list of FTP servers and Mirror FTP servers to download from, i just clicked on each ftp and timed it to which gave me the fastest responce then used that one to install it from. :) [edit] have you used linux before or would this be the first time? because if your just learning it, your not going to need the pro anyway. |

I was prefering Pro I guess because members at another forum were saying to get PRO for varius reasons, too tired to remember what they were at moment. Ya know If paying end's up being the only easy way to get PRO, then it would be expensive for me to try and see if it would even work heh. Oh great I hijacked this thread ... :sneaky: |
Re: Battle of the Video Cards
I own a 9800pro and am quite happy with it, but I'm really a novice as far as gfx cards go. From the opinion of this outsider, Nvidia vs ATI really seems like a Ford vs Chevy thing. They both have their strong points and neither is vastly superior, but people have a strong attachment to one brand or another.
I've also noticed that people who like AMD chips tend to like Nvidia cards and people who like Pentiums tend to like ATI cards. |
Re: Battle of the Video Cards
Quote:
ford sucks. dont compare them to anyone. :p :D hehe But no, i've never noticed that at all. sometimes i would say the opposite. However, Nivida makes a motherboard, (nforce motherboards) that are only for AMD. which might be part of the reason you notice such of a conclusion. |
Re: Battle of the Video Cards
I only owned nVidia cards, and still have one on my PC. I'm still using the very old GeFirce 3 TI. It's an excelent card, and I can't complain about it, but it's not for this generation.
If I was to buy the top card right ow that would be the ATI x800XT. It is way to close to the nVidia 6800U and even above it on some scores. Plus it's native on PCI Express on which it wasn't even tested. The whider bandwith migth help it a little as well. That doesen't mean that I like the fact that they stick with Shaders v2 instead of the new Shader v3, but no games has v3 shading yet. On the long run, I think nVidia will be this round the winner, as it was during the GF2 and the GF3 times, and as ATI was starting with 9500 and up |
Re: Battle of the Video Cards
I stopped using video cards 2 years ago.

Re: Battle of the Video Cards
I'll settle for my 9800pro for now. I've had excellent experiences with both nVidia and ATi, so I'll go for whatever one is cheaper at the time I purchase it.
