Routers suck
Now I have a new, but similar scenario. My dad got a new computer, and we hooked up the cable modem and the ISP. Then I tried to hook up the router, but it couldn't configure it. I just don't understand why the router won't work. Basically the way it's hooked up is the LAN port on the cable modem has an Ethernet cable plugged in, and the other end is hooked into the Internet port on the Router. Then the second ethernet cable is plugged into one of the 4 ethernet ports on the router, and the other end is plugged into the ethernet port on the computer. So basically, the computer is hooked up to the router, and the cable modem is hooked up to the router. I don't know what the problem is.

Re: Routers suck
Have you done anything ON the computer to acknowledge that it's there?
The ethernet cable should be plugged into WAN, and the computer should be plugged into a numbered slot. |
Re: Routers suck
Did it come with special software?
|
Re: Routers suck
What OS?
What type of Router? I think the order they should be turned on is first the modem then the router should be turned on. and then the computer. Have you used this router before? if so perhaps find the reset button on it? Also try going to 192.168.1.1 in your web browser and see if it connects at all to the router. |
Re: Routers suck
This is the same router that just stopped working a few months ago when it was hooked up on my dad's old computer. We know that the router isn't broke because my dad's friend brought it to his house and it works, and he has the same router, so that's why he was able to test it. Anyway, my modem and router are linksys. To answer your question Dyne, there is no WAN port in the back of the Cable modem or the Router, and I have tried to install the router on to this computer. I did what the steps said. I think that when we originally set up the router and the modem, the ethernet cable that goes into the back of the computer went into internet slot in the back of the router. Then the second ethernet cable when into one of the 4 slots and then it hooks into the LAN port in the back of the cable modem. That isn't very logical to me, but I'll try it. What is an OS Null?

Re: Routers suck
operating system. Win XP, Win 2000, Win 98, Win ME, Mac OSX, Linux. What you got?
And did you try typing 192.168.1.1 into a web browser on a computer thats hooked up to that router? if router is working properly it should take you to a login screen. if not it will sit there trying to connect for a while Thats if your router is new enough to have such. You say you ever had it working on the internet before ?? |

Re: Routers suck
Whatever computers are hooked to the router, just type 192.168.1.1 and it should load up like Null said. If it doesnt try on the other computer connected to the router and see what happens.

Re: Routers suck
Ok Zebra, let's see if you've done this all correctly.
First, your little cable box must be connected directly to the router, not the computer. Then you run a cable from the router to the computer's ethernet port. On the back of the router, there should be some ports. My Linksys router has 5 ports. One of them is slightly separated from the rest and is labeled 'Internet'. The other four are numbered 1-4. The one that is labeled internet is the port where you need to hook your cable box up to. Then you hook up your computer running a cable from one of the numbered ports to the ethernet port on your computer. If you're hooking up another computer with the use of a cable just do the same thing and run it to another one of the numbered ports on the back of the router. If you're hooking up another computer wiressly, just make sure the receiver is connected to the computer that will be using it. Now turn your computers off. Then on the back of your cable box, there should be a little reset button, press it. There should also be one on the back of the router, press it also. After the cable box is done resetting (the lights start flashing like normal again), turn on your computers. Check and see if you get online. The main computer should be able to. If it isn't able, make sure you installed the software that came on the CD with the router. If you are able to get online, go to Linksys's website and find the driver/update section for your router and get the new updates. |
Re: Routers suck
That's how I set it up. The reset button only really works on the cable modem, it's hard to push on the router. Anyway, the problem is when I try to install the software. I can't remember what it says, but I could run it again and see what it says.

Re: Routers suck
Yeah, on the router, you have to push the reset button with a pen or other small pointy object. If you already have the stuff installed, it'll probably tell you. I will now wait for you edit.

Re: Routers suck
Okay, I got all the way to the step where it starts to configure the router. After it got to 100% of the loading a message came up that said "The router is not able to connect to the internet. Try turning the Cable/DSL Modem OFF and back ON again." I really don't understand this. It makes no sense that the router shouldn't work. I believe that the problem is the configuration.

Re: Routers suck
Did you hit the reset button on the router?

Are you going to call Linksys or ask them to assist you online?

I don't understand how you're unable to reset it. |
Re: Routers suck
This isn't the same router, but it has the same type of reset button.
![]() As you can see, it's not the kind where it's a tiny hole that you stick a pen into. You can actually see the button, and it's bigger. It won't move when I try to push it. What will resetting it do anyway? Won't it just basically do the same thing as pulling out the power cord, and putting it back in? |

no. it has memory. it will ratain settings even if you unplug it. need to reset. |
Re: Routers suck
My reset button is the same and I'm able to push it with a pen tip, and a paper clip would definatley work.

Re: Routers suck
Well for example, sometimes my family's PC for some reason may not be receiving the signal from the router. The PC has a wireless USB receiver. So then, I use the reset button on the back of the router and that refreshes the signal and stuff, and the PC is able to start receiving again.

Re: Routers suck
If your router has WAN on the back like it does in that picture than maybe you just bought the wrong router? Mine says internet on the back.
Have you consulted the website support section, you can also call the people or speak with them in a little chat box. I've done that before. Don't give up! |
Re: Routers suck

it should say WAN. maybe other companies put internet instead. but its still a WAN port your plugging it into. |

yanno seriously. would it have been so hard to answer one question?
Your problem is so easy to fix. but you dont answer any questions about it, and expect to get an answer. |
Re: Routers suck
WE FIXED IT!!! The problem was the firmware software was too old. We updated it, installed the router on my dad's new computer, and it works now!! I'm so damn happy..thanks all you guys for trying to help. :D

Re: Routers suck
aka. resetted the settings. :P a firmware update will reboot the settings to default. it wasnt quite that it was too old. cuz it woulda ran the older firmware too.
but congrats on getting it working. |

Re: Routers suck
Didn't I tell you to check the website for updates?
Oh well, glad you've fixed it, still don't understand how you can't press the button but it's all good. :) |
