Official IGN sucks ass thread

I thought one thread for people to bitch about IGN would be perfect :D

As most people might know, IGN's message boards have turned Insider only - you have to pay to even VIEW messages.

I think that it's only a matter of time before the whole site turns to Insider only, and you'll have to pay to view any news on the site.

Time for other members to let their rage out!

Revival 02-21-2002 06:20 PM

I think it's the gayest thing ever...

IGN is getting greedy. There are a few people who will continue to pay, but I refuse to. I refused to pay when they first started IGN Insider, I wasn't going to pay money to read the news. Now, it's even worse, having to pay money to view their message boards.

Also, each day, more and more news stories are becoming Insider only.. which totally sucks.

The_Dunadan 02-21-2002 06:20 PM

i thought we already had this thread like a week or two ago:unsure:

yeh, they'll eventually be insider only but i'll just go to another site for the news. eventually the ppl giving them some of the inside scoop will learn that not everybody goes there anymore, right?

i got mad when the guides went to insider. i'm not an insider, i never was, and i will never be!

DeathsHand 02-21-2002 06:20 PM

I wish people would just forget about IGN and get all their forum, news, reviews, etc needs at other sites...

:sneaky:

...So IGN can die and we won't have anything to complain about :D

cubedojo 02-21-2002 06:21 PM

ign has been sucking more and more ever since they came up with that fee ****.

They first has an insider only site with cool features, then it became half the message boards that were insider only, then it invaded into the regualr site news and most stories were insider only, now they have gone too far, making all message boards insider only was the last straw, I have no reason to visit there site now, nor do 50% of the people who visit ign.

I predict they will eventually run out of money by the end of this year, its sad to see once a good site, run out of bussiness because of there own greed. But thats life

designated_GM3R 02-21-2002 06:21 PM

Gaming-Age, among other sites, have began to barricade their registration of new members. You actually have to be manually approved to become a member of the site. And this was evoked for good reason, the IGN refugees have hit GA... and hard.

Revival 02-21-2002 06:25 PM

Well.. I don't give a rat's ass about IGN.

I hope they shut down soon.. and I think they are going to. They can only suck money off of people for so long before it gets old.

I'm suprised that IGN hasn't already blocked linking images like Geo****ties already does.

Now, there are TONS of gaming sites out there, most of them suck, and never make it anywhere, and those are the ones hosted on Geo****ties and Angelfire and crappy hosting sites like that. Now, for some of the ones that have their own domain name, they have just as much news as IGN, if not, very close. They might not have all the pictures and the gadgets like that, but hey, you don't have to fork over $20 a month to view the GameTavern forums now do ya? It only costs you 200 doubloons to view the Black Project forum ;)

Honestly, you're the one getting greedy. You've been going to IGN for years, without paying a penny. They in turn provide you with up-to-date news, and information, free of charge. Now you call them greedy for asking for money. IGN is busting their ass and spending millions to provide you that information, and you call them greedy because you can't get it for free.

Magazine subscriptions cost money. They don't go out and get the information for you for free. They get paid money to provide you with that information. Newspapers are the same way. Television is free (non-cable), only because enough people view it that the networks can make a profit simply by selling air time to companies in the form of commercials. Some channels are more special interest, and they have their own subscription plans to keep in business.

The internet was a booming industry now. Companies used to be able to display ads on their webpage and makes millions almost overnight. That isn't the case anymore, and more sites have begun making their visitors pay for things. IGN is no different, they don't make much money displaying those ads. Honestly, no one clicks them. It's not like a commercial where you actually care to watch it and see the product. Banner ads don't sell products very well, because we can all just scroll past them. Because of this, if you still want to get information and use the services that companies like IGN provide, you're going to have to pay for it, because they have no outside source of income, unlike MSNBC or CNN.

Message boards cost IGN a ton of money. They are constantly having people work to improve them, and if you can't expect them to allow you to use them for free. It also costs them money to go to all these shows, and developers to get you all the information they provide. GT has to pay money to get the forums, then pay for servers to run it on. If we had our own proprietary message board, and programmers working around the clock to improve it, then we would be chargind too. Of course, then you guys would take everything you have for granted, and start threads saying GT sucks.

There's a reason IGN became so popular, people liked them. They liked them because they provide great information. If you don't want to pay for it, that's your choice. If you don't subscribe to TIME magazine, that's also your choice. But if you don't, you won't get the information they provide.

You can't get everything for free, and you never will be able to. If you don't want to pay to be an Insider, then stop crying about it and go get your news elsewhere.

Revival 02-21-2002 07:17 PM

Me? Go to IGN?

I didn't even know that, and I am an Insider. Funny how you know such a thing and you don't go to IGN.

Now, it's even worse
So you're admitting you knew what IGN was like before too.

Must visit them often to realize that.

You obviously get images from IGN.

Nice try.

Revival 02-21-2002 07:53 PM

Gekko.. cubedojo came on AIM and told me that IGN was now Insider only - that's how I knew.

What I know about IGN, I'm basing off what I've heard other people tell me, and what I saw when cubay gave me a link there today.

GameMaster 02-21-2002 08:34 PM

Their only hurting themselves

Xantar 02-21-2002 08:56 PM

All right, guys. Break it up, break it up. Move along. No hate threads in here.

*notices that it's a hate thread about IGN*

Oh...well, ok.

Anyway, who cares if IGN's boards go Insider only? Who here thinks the IGN boards are actually any good? I spent some time there and very nearly lost a few valuable brain cells reading the drivel that people call "posts" in there. I don't expect that things have changed, so I couldn't care less whether I have to pay to visit the IGN boards.

Of course, I have an Insider account, so it still doesn't matter to me.

By the way, all the people predicting IGN's death seem to know an awful lot about IGN's finances. They obviously know all the costs associated with running the site as well as the exact number of people subscribing to Insider.

Perfect Stu 02-21-2002 09:26 PM

the only reason why anyone would be complaining is if they liked IGN...

so shooter, I don't believe a word you've been saying...

and if you don't want to pay the money, you won't be able to access the site (soon enough)...have a problem with that? go to another site.

some of you guys are crybabies

Jason1 02-21-2002 09:58 PM

me, if I had a credit card, id be fully willing to fork up the 20 bucks a year or whatever it costs now. They have some great stuff that you just cant find anywhere else. The problem is If i wanted to subscribe using my parents credit cards, it would go something like this...

ME: mom, can I charge 20 bucks to your credit card and then Ill pay you back?

MOM(or dad, no diffrence): what for?

ME: so I can get IGN insider and see videogame news

MOM: so you mean it costs to view videogame news on the Internet?

ME: on IGN, yes

MOM: GO TO HELL BITCH!!!!! (or something of the sort:D )

GameMaster 02-21-2002 10:04 PM

Jason, you have an extremely, cold hearted, disfunctional family :(

nWoCHRISnWo 02-21-2002 10:06 PM

Gekko why the hell do you suck IGN's balls so often?

IGN sucks and if anyone is paying to go there, they're probably retarded.

Drunk Hobbit 02-22-2002 02:15 AM

Glanced over PGC board...

Quote:

Do the math. $.07 a day times 40,000 Insiders. take that and multiply it by 365 and you now have over 1 million dollars a year. And they can't afford to have a board for un non-insiders...BS.

sorry if it is off topic. I promise i will not do off topic post again. I just want everyone to realize how greedy IGN is.
Quote:

not bad considering that all they do is steal other peoples images, tag them up and then sell em eh?

BreakABone 02-22-2002 02:25 AM

Well um is this a bad time to bring up my IGN offer.. for only 2000 dblns you can now have 2 week access (Hey the demand for the Cubes have sky rocketed so you know as will the price)

GameMaster 02-22-2002 02:53 AM

You're not gonna get any takers for 2000 doubloons. Try 500.

Angrist 02-22-2002 03:50 AM

Chapter 11: The Downfall of IGN
I really hate those guys... I always check Tendo Box.

azazela31 02-22-2002 09:03 AM

I would pay for IGN BUT their reviews are so f@cking biased!! Mediocre games get above 9.0 scores!!

The info they have can easily be found on other sites, and the movies and pics of games can easily be found gamespot.com, gamesdomain.com

The message boards are nothing big, but f@ck them!! Hope they die.

I admit that visit IGN and it's a great site, but it's not good enough for me to dish out 10 bucks per month.

ed328 02-22-2002 01:01 PM

Do the math.

Let's assume that all 40,000 members paid $25 to get Insider, which is high cause that wasn't always the rate. That's $1,000,000. Now, IGN has a staff of 40 people. That's $25,000 per person in salary which really isn't all that much. This isn't even taking into account all of the hardware, software, bandwidth, overhead costs that are also associated with the site. Anybody who thinks IGN are making out like thieves must have failed math.

Blackmane 02-22-2002 01:17 PM

If they really did care about us, they would lay off a few people, cut back on a lot of the non-gaming garbage and then they wouldn't have to charge us and not have to make everything exclusive. Its not like they have no choice.

gekko 02-22-2002 01:46 PM

Why the hell would IGN care about you? It's like you expect IGN to care about you so much, when you aren't even willing to pay for an account.

Angrist 02-22-2002 03:25 PM

Oh yeah how do you think other websites make money?? They also have advertising earnings and other stuff. Perhaps they get their games for free (sort of sponsering).

azazela31 02-22-2002 03:30 PM

Well I really don't care, they were a great source of info. I'd rather use the 25 dollars to buy a 3rd controllers so screw IGN.

I could understand making some of the things insider but this has gone too far. Hope they just crumble.

Angrist 02-22-2002 04:26 PM

I want the Turok movies! How come they have them exclusive???

Most don't make money. And if they do, it's because they sell a product or service. In case you haven't noticed, there have been tons of online companies that closed because they didn't make enough money to cover their expenses. It's hard in today's economic climate for a company with no offline presence to survive.

Well if you didn't notice IGN was already making a sh!tload of money. Now that they want everything to be insider screw them.

I'm not paying 25 dollars to read a ****ty 2 phrargrahp analysis of how the GCN will do next month, and to download 3 lame movies.

I mean for free this would be great, but I can find better uses for that 25 dollars.

Xantar 02-22-2002 06:06 PM

I repeat: you seem to know an awful lot about IGN's finances. Such as the exact amount of money that they are making from advertisements. Do you have IGN's balance sheet handy so I can take a look at it?

Believe me they are not only self sufficient, but also make a profit.

You think they'd be running the site if they were losing money?? Hell no.

40,000 x 25 = 1 million dollars.
IGN PEOPLE'S MONEY
:burger:

So they are self sufficient, and do end p making money.

thehtownpoption 02-22-2002 09:18 PM

I still don't see what everyone whines about. If you don't want to pay, then don't pay. Quit whining, it's only $20 a year; I spend more than that a week just on lunch. And if you don't like IGN so much then why does it make a big difference to you whether or not it's becoming Insider-only? If you don't like them, you should have no problem with it.

And I rarely buy lunch... :D

there's also so much I want that's out or coming out that I have to watch what I buy... and it's a big deal when I do get something...

Like last night I pre-ordered virtua fighter 4 yay for me :D

But I'm not spending 20 bucks when I site could possibly shut down before I get my full year or whatever, and I'm not saying it will shut down, but still I got screwed when that happened with a magazine and I don't want it to happen with IGN munch and stuff :burger:

They could have at least made it so I can look at the forums and laugh :(

That's fine; if you don't want to pay for it then cool.

But don't whine about not getting what you want because it costs a little bit of cash. If you really liked IGN so much you would be more than willing to shell out the very small amount it costs, just like you would for a magazine you partically liked.

I'm not saying you whine about it DH, I don't really remember if you do or not, I'm just talking to whoever does whine about it.

Yeah I know...

'thing is, I only used IGN for news... forums (when I was bored... I was signed up since like april 00 maybe? And I have like 800 posts... which is... nothing for my standards ;) )... and the occasional review score thing...

But I can just get that from other sites now...

So the only thing I really miss is the forums... cuz now when I get very bored and I'd usually go to IGN, I have to try to find something else to do...

and trust me, I have too much free time, and a lot of that time I'm bored :(

Cheapskates never prevail...

I hope they lose everything and are forced into uncomfortable bankruptcy. I mean, please, lets put this into perspective. A video game site. I don't need to know the whole storyline and see every possible screenshot from Mario Sunshine eight months (sarcasm) before it's release. Believe it or not, I have a life. Let's take a look at Mario 64 for example. I didn't go to any site before it's release or even knew what it was going to look like until I went to my friends house to play two weeks after it's release. Quite frankly, I didn't care. Now I know a lot about it. I've beaten the game also. For some reason no one wants to see screen shots or sneak peek QuickTime movies of it now though?
