Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
I have decided that the contest forum needs to see a little more action, and what better way to do it than a Magic tournament?
Magic The Gathering, for those of you who dont know, is an extremely strategy based trading card game. But lets face it, if you dont know what MtG is, than your not likely to do well at all in this tournament. It is possible to play Magic on the internet, using a software called "apprentice". To get apprentice, go to this site: Dragon Studios If Dragon Studios will not load, use this site: http://www.mtgparadise.com/~mtgportal/pages/appr.htm But it doesnt have the Mirrodin set in it. Oh well. I dont like Mirrodin anyway. Click on Apprentice, then download it. Then download the latest Oracle patch. Then familiarize yourself with the system, and create a legal Type 2 deck. You heard me TYPE 2! In order to create a type 2 deck, just apply the "Type 2" filter when creating a deck in the "Deck Editor." So, if you download this, or already have it, and are interested in participating in the Great GameTavern Magic Tournament, just make a post saying it, and I will constantly update this post with a list of participants. There are three formats you can play in: Type II (current cards), Type I (every card ever created), Type II & I (you play in both tournaments.) Once (if) we have enough, the Tournament will commense. Type II: Participants: Vampyr The Sly Moogle Rndm_Perfection Josh Bube Type I: Participants StoneCutter The Sly Moogle Josh Rndm_Perfection Vampyr (I decided I would go through the 1000's of cards, and I made what I think is an awesome Type I deck.) Bube If you havent played magic in a great deal of time, and you arent familiar with the Type II format, or if you have never played magic before and are interested in starting, then go to this site: Brain Burst and get a premade deck that you find interesting or looks like fun to play with. But be warned: Its not nearly as rewarding to play and win with a deck built by someone else than it is with your own deck. |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
Come on people let's tounament it up! Apprentice rules! Online Magic Tournament style! I want some competition!
|
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
I don't like the idea only because it loses the element of possession. I can make the ultimate type two deck.. whee.
But anywho, I think I'll join for the hell of it. It'd be a good way to at least test out decks. |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
I'll play if you guys do a type 1 or a type 1.5 tourney, but as I haven't played in about 3 years, and have zero desire to read through about 1000 cards to find a decent deck strategy, I really don't want to play type two.
Now, if you want to do a little urzas/mercadian or tempest/urzas block type two, that's cool by me. |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
Since I only started playing about a year ago, I have zero desire to go through 1000's of cards to make a good deck.
But I'll go ahead and make a seperate bracket for a Type I tournament, and anyone who wants to participate in it, or Type II, or both, can have their names added to the relative list. But I must say, its not hard to find a Type II deck. If you dont feel like making one yourself, go to Brain Burst and find one already built. |

Where's the fun in that? |

Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
I would definantly be interested in a type 1 tounament.
|
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
I'll go Type one as well... and I'll actually use a deck that I own!
|
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
I get "host not found" when I go to dragonstudios.com. And I really wanted to play...
|
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
The site appears to be down right now...I'll try to find a mirror site. Check this post for updates.
[edit] http://www.mtgparadise.com/~mtgportal/pages/appr.htm This is apprentice...but its lacking the Mirrodin expansion. I think Mirrodin sucks, though, so you shouldnt need it. :p |

Not having it, you'd be at quite the disadvantage. Oooh... I love mah lightning greaves. |

And I'm confused about Mirrodin being useless because it uses artifacts. Artifacts can fit into any deck... they are colorless. But yes, your zombie deck did use a mirrodin card, terror. |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
Hrm.. how for you play are ? I'm confused are you playing over webcam or something ?
If so I'll find my cards and play :P. But you'd have to tell me times meh.. But thats way too much of a hassel |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
For whatever reason, apprentice isn't working for me, I keep getting an error message "silver is not a valad integer value" and then it doesn't work, I don't get the "table" part of the screen.
I'll wait for dragon studios to come back up, or someone can send me the file for XP. |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
I could send you the XP file. It's only like a MB zipped. Wouldn't take long. And the Oracle update isn't large.

But anyway, you can like Mirrodin if you want. Its just my opinion of it. I dont like it. I know people who hate scourge, but its my favorite expansion. Quote:

Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
I've downloaded it 3 times, I know it's a buggy program, but I never had this much trouble on my old comp.
|
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
Dragon Studios is back up. I'm d/loading it (with Mirrodin, I hope, because I like Mirrodin).
I beat my 2 of my friends with custom decks (and one of them is very good at building decks) with my pre-constructioned Mirrodin deck. The artifact affinity is very good. |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
Quote:
Indeed, Affinity is good, but I have a deck that can own Affinity any day. :D |

Heh, unless you have a isochron scepter and holy day *shudders*. Stuff like Akroma is nice, but you'd have to get extraplanar lense out to get any hope of playing her by turn five with a mono-white. Serra Angels on the other hand... super cool creatures. |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
Quote:
But, Moogle, what does Angels have to do with my Goblins stomping Affinity? GB still owns Affinity. So, Bube, which tournaments do you want in on? |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
What do you mean by which tournaments? I don't get it?
|
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament

A Type I format, and a Type II format. A Type I format means you can use any card ever created. A Type II format means that you can only use recent cards. (To find out which cards you can use in Type II, just apply a Type II filter in the Deck Editor on apprentice.) When I ask you which tournament(s) you wanted in, I was asking you which of the two (or both) of the tournaments you wanted to compete in. For a list of people currently signed up to compete in each tournament, check my very first post on this thread. Once we have enough people and its obvious no one else will join, the tournament will commense. I'll create a bracket for each tournament, and the Type II tournament will be held first. Question: Do you guys want to play single or double elimination? |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
Ok, I get TI, TII stuff, but it doesn't matter. As long as I can use my Mirrodin deck (it's my newest, and it sucks less than my other deck).

[edit] Did you ever get Apprentice to work, Stoney? |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
OH! yes, sorry about not keeping you updated, I'll be good to go.

Are you sure about not being in Type II? If we had one more person, then I wouldnt have to worry about giving anyone a by. And I have also decided to make it double elimination, that way everyone gets some to play at least two games. |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
I know that you're waiting for a player oh great sage and eminent Junkie, but will this tournement be before the break ends? I would like that.
|
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament

But yeah, it will be before break is over. But Im going to schedule around the survivor events, so it wont be tomorrow. Ace said in his PM he was going to sign up for the tournament, but Im not sure if he was going to post in this thread or just wanted me to put him on, and I dont know what formats he wants to compete in. Plus, I would really like to have an even number in both formats, Its going to be hard to do the T2 one with 5 instead of 6 people. We will wait to see what the future holds, Gunslinger. |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
Hmm I would also think that anytime near the 1st would be bad, I know I have family Junk on the 31st and 1st. Maybe sometime on the evening of the 1st would be cool. I know my parents will be very difficult to work with because they always want the phone. Ahh, I hope I can play, I have cool decks planned for the Tournements.

How about the 2nd? Is that good for everyone? This way no one has a hangover and can play well. |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
Our time difference is at least 7 hours. How will we get together?
BTW, I come home only at weekends and wednesdays. I can't play any other way. Sorry for the trouble... |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
ahh *sighs* I just leaned how to play MTG from my friend. he's good, won a few competitions. I beat him once or twice, but I'm nowhere near his level of expertise(considering he has 1,000+ cards and started playing 3 0r 4 years ago, and I just started 2 or 3 weeks ago). I mainly use a white creature deck. i'm gonna try to build a good blue deck,my buddy killed me with that thing, and maybe a red or a green(more likely red, because it focuses on heavy hitting)....don't have any money, tho.
maybe i could make it. what time, tho? and how? oh well, that's how the mana pool is tapped....... |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
Ok, I was planning on doing this the 2nd of January. But, due to recent discoveries, I have to reconsider.
[EDIT] CHECK MY LAST POST ON THIS THREAD FOR THE TOURNAMENT TIMES. THEY DIFFER FROM WHAT WAS IN YOUR PM's. Quote:
Since you just started playing, Im going to assume that you play using newer cards, so I am going to put you in the Type II tournament. Type I is full. This will make 6 people in each tournament, double elimination style. Ok, Yugi, you have until 1:00 PM January 3rd Est Time to reply to this message, saying that you have apprentice downloaded and ready to compete. If you do not reply by then, I will assume you are not going to compete and you will not be able too. In case you dont know, Type II is a format of tournament, in which only the last 5 sets are legal to play with: Onslaught, Legions, Scourge, 8 Edition, and Mirrodin. If you want to know what cards are legal, when you download apprentice, just open the "Deck Editor" and apply a "Type II" filter. Remember, 1:00 PM Jan. 3rd Est. Time. Be there, or be square. :p |
Re: Magic the Gathering Apprentice Tournament
I'm not going to be around satruday night.
Sorry. |

As soon as I find out whether Yugi is in or out, Im going to make a bracet. When you are online at the same time the person your supposed to play against is, play your games. You will do the best out of three in all of your games. Then you will report the winner, and I will update the bracets. Dont procrastinate, play your matches as soon as you see your opponet online. Keep checking back here for the bracets. By doing this instead of actually making a set time, things will move MUCH more smoothly, and if everything goes according to plan, we will be finished before Christmas Break is over. [edit] if your not a very acitive member on GameTavern, and you dont feel like logging on constantly to see if your opponent is on, just contact me and I will set up a time for your match. |
