Resolution to "Server too Busy" Messages

I have disabled some options that should decrease on the "server too busy" messages. I have not forced guests to register yet, although I have cut back on their privileges. If worst comes to worst I will make all guests register to view the forum.

Now, I need your help to see if what I have done has worked. I personally am not getting any of these "server too busy" messages, so I need to know if you are continuing to get them after this point. I don't care if you got them before; I want to know if you are getting them right now and into the future. Thanks.

Well, I was getting that message 90% of the time. And for once, I logged on and it didnt give it to me. So either I got extremely lucky, or you fixed it.

Just got that message again right now. For me I have to log out before I can get back in.

Er, what do you mean?

Ginkasa 09-19-2003 10:50 PM

He's saying that when he gets the "server too busy message", if he logs out and then logs back in, he can by-pass the message.

Yep thats what I mean. I think other people have tried that and it works, thats where I got the idea.

Clearing the cookies seem to make the busy server message go away.

Well, I've now forced all guests to register to view the board since nothing else has worked. The bots seem to be going down. I may try closing the boards for a few minutes sometime today. Hopefully that will get them to go away. It's not that they are really that bad, but I guess we can't handle all the bandwidth they're taking up.

I give up. I've tried everything to stop these spiders but they just won't leave.

Ginkasa 09-20-2003 09:52 PM

Here's the "server busy" message.

Edit: Or not... It won't let me attach the picture

Edit2: Better

Re: Resolution to

Well, I'm afraid to say I can't stop these "server too busy" error messages. Logging in does seem to bypass them though. I have uploaded a file that should tell the bots to **** off in the future, but for now we have to wait it out until this group leaves. :(

I love these server too busy messages. They are sweet.

Re: Re: Re: Resolution to

It seems as though the spyder bots have gone away. Is anyone still getting the "server too busy" messages?

GameMaster 09-21-2003 09:45 PM

Re: Re: Re: Re: Resolution to

Yeah, I just did. And there are 34 guests viewing GT...

I thought they had to register...

Edit: Now it's 22 guests, a slight drop.

Happydude 09-21-2003 11:50 PM

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Resolution to

i got one earlier today...at about 7 or 8 i think.

and right now there are 28 guests

Bond 09-22-2003 07:57 AM

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Resolution to

All of the guests we have right now are actual guests though. There are no longer any spyder bots as far as I can tell.

Happydude 09-22-2003 03:39 PM

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Resolution to

i just got the message again...and i checked the number of guests on...48...48!!!

thats a pretty large number of guests..anyway to decrease the amount of guests allowed on at a time?

edit: i've counted the number of acually guests and it was 10...the others were google spyders

I got one today when I came on right after school, and now I'm back here, but I didn't get one. They don't bother me much, because all I have to do is sign in and it takes me to the main forum. And even if the server too busy messages come up it's not like I have to go to another page to sign in, so they don't really bother me.

I got one before I signed in today.

Not that I can find. I did find a lot of other useful tips & tricks though, which none seem to be working.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Resolution to

I guess the best way for members to combat the server too busy and keep their new posts is to just get used to unchecking the box that says automatically log me in. Then when you log in, any new posts since you were last on will be there.

And oh yeah, I got the message not too long ago also :p

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Resolution to

Bond, is it possible you could alter any part of the url?

Like instead of ".net/forums" you could change it to ".net/forum" so that would most likely confuse all our bot visitors.

And I still think you should require people to register before they can view.

That probably is possible, although every single vB forum I have seen has "/forums/" Even if I was able to do that all of our pages would get screwed up and it would probably create more trouble then it is worth.

I might require people to register to view the board, but that didn't stop the bots. I even tried closing the forum overnight and it didn't stop them.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Resolution to

When you change a major part of the address like that doesn't it automatically change the part of the address in all the pages?

Edit: I just checked the "Who's Online" area and it listed almost all the guests as Google Spiders. Do you think maybe you could try contacting Google and ask them to stop scanning our site.

Bond 09-23-2003 10:05 PM

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Resolution to

All of the addresses may change automatically, but I'm not sure and I wouldn't want to take that risk.

I've done a few hours of research (ugh) on how to get rid of the spider bots, and I found how to create this file that the bots should check to see what folders they are allowed to index and whether or not you even want them indexing your website. Obviously the google spider isn't checking the file, which it should every 48 hours or so. I'm trying a lot of other different things also, so hopefully something will work.

I would contact google like GameMaster said I mean they should be reasonable people. :)

That's actually the file I was talking about. Which isn't working...

I'll review that page though and make sure everything is in order.

Alright, I edited the file a little bit so hopefully it will work now.

I also added a meta tag that should tell them to go away.

The Duggler 09-25-2003 04:36 PM

I think you got it.

I haven't got the message for some time now.

Good job!

Jonbo298 09-25-2003 04:45 PM

Re: Resolution to "Server too Busy" Messages

It seems to be working correctly. I haven't seen any Google Spiders as Guests on GT yet since the editing/fixing.

We should applaud Bond for the work he has done. +rep

heh...39 guests, yet no spiders...wow...good job.

Alright, so if anyone continues to get the "server too busy" message on a regular basis I need to know, because everything should be fixed.

*sigh* just got another one of those msgs...

although there are no more spiders anymore, you should do something about the guests :(

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Resolution to

Apparently guests can no longer view unless they are signed in so I don't understand why there are so many guests.

Bond 09-26-2003 06:57 PM

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Resolution to

Right now guests can view the board without registering.

As long as they aren't spyder bots that is.

Why are we a part of the "Click4Click Banner Exchange Assocication"? Is it for the personal advertisement of our forum or will we get funded for advertising large corporations on the site?
