Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Reviews

IGN's Review:

Closing Comments
Knights of the Old Republic is an outstanding game because it covers every single angle in terms of audience expectations. It's got enough Star Wars to satisfy the fans and enough pure fun to draw in people who normally wouldn't get into role-playing games. You'll see this on several Game of the Year nomination lists if not at the very top soon enough.

Put this up there with Halo, Splinter Cell and any other Xbox game that kept you up way too late or caused you to neglect your loved ones. It grabs you early on by giving your character some cool toys to play with and some familiar Star Wars critters to welcome you back and next thing you know you've got a space ship, a light saber, a wookie and a droid. With Knights of the Old Republic, the galaxy is yours, get out there and get some.

10.0 Presentation
There's more real Star Warsedness in this game than in the last two movies combined. Great menu system has the best use of triggers we've seen in a while.

9.0 Graphics
A hiccup or two here or there, but for the most part, this is one of the prettiest Star Wars games on any system in any genre.

10.0 Sound
The sound effects are given but the voice-acting was so amazing, we think the standard has just been raised.

9.0 Gameplay
It moves like an action game, plays like nothing you've played before and makes role--playing exciting again.

10.0 Lasting Appeal
This will probably be the deepest single player experience available on Xbox when all is said and done. Wait there's going to be downloadable content too?

OVERALL: 9.5
(out of 10 / not an average)
More to come as they are posted.

This is probably a dumb question, but is it online? Not just download new things to do, but full online. Maybe my friend will get the game because its Star Wars and its an RPG.

Crono 07-15-2003 10:52 AM

Jonbo, it has downloadable content.

And I must say... this game does sound pretty sweet. With KoToR, Fable, BC, Halo 2, and a bunch of others, looks like I'll have to pick up an Xbox when I get the cash.

Bond 07-15-2003 12:19 PM

Re: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Reviews

Yeah, it only has downloadable content. If you want an online Star Wars game go look at Galaxies.

And I must say, the Xbox is starting to get a lot of quality RPGs.

9.5!

HOLY SCHNIKES!

I was predicting 9.2 from IGN and I never thought it would hit that.

I want...

Dyne 07-15-2003 07:10 PM

Yeah, that's a really good score. :) This will be the best non-Halo Xbox game to date.

Ginkasa 07-15-2003 08:07 PM

I can't get it until Thursday... *sniff*

Gamespot's Review:

It's apparent from playing Knights of the Old Republic that a remarkable amount of effort, work, and talent went into this game. It's one of the only Star Wars games to truly make you feel at times as though you're a key player in and a part of this unique and beloved sci-fi setting. You'll get to do all the sorts of stuff that you've seen and enjoyed in the Star Wars movies, and you'll get to emulate any of your favorite characters' personalities and actions over the course of the game. You'll also experience a much more morally complex version of Star Wars than what you get from the movies. Along the way, you'll find a few aspects of the game that you'll wish were better, but that's mostly because the vast majority of Knights of the Old Republic is so exceptionally good. You don't need to be a fan of Star Wars or of RPGs to appreciate all the impressive qualities of this game--but if you are, all the better.

Overall: 9.1

Even though I hate Star Wars, this game interests me. I saw commercials for this game. Looks great.

GameKinG 07-16-2003 03:07 PM

They should not have replaced the old guy that use to say "no power greater than x". The one in the KOTOR commercial sucks...

Just my little rant.

bobcat 07-16-2003 06:05 PM

where does this fit into star wars? like which episode and stuff?

4000 years before the movies.

Re: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Reviews

Software ETC (Gamestop, whatever) got it at 7 PM tonight. I think that I got one of the last copies too, there was quite a long line. Anyway, it's pretty good so far. The combat system is simple and easy to use. The voice acting is awesome. The controls are good. The graphics are pretty good, although I did think they would be a little bit better, I can't complain. The cut scenes are awesome. It's really a great game so far.

It's pretty cool though how you can pick your own replies in conversations. I suppose I "insulted" one of the aliens, I really didn't think much of it at the time. But when I went back to the area where we was he brought his buddy and attacked me. Luckily I kicked his ass. :)

Ginkasa 07-16-2003 10:36 PM

Can you pick replies in almost any conversation, like with just random extras, or is it only in certain places for the story or just a few people or what?

You can pick replies in almost any conversations. There are a wide variety of replies also. Some favor the dark side, others favor the light side. You can also sometimes try to persuade people into thinking something, sometimes people persuade you into doing or thinking something. There are so many options I couldn't explain them all. It's awesome though that you actually have the choice to decide what you say rather than be a 3rd party in most RPGs. Some of the decisions are really hard to make.

exactly the same as Console games. except more upgradable, better looking (if you have a system to handle it) better fps (same thing) and they never end because of countless addons and maps and mods.

Plus you can use any Console controller on them to play the game.

but yea. computer games arent too great. ;)

When does it come out on PC? Or was it a simultaneous release?

Re: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Reviews

.. well gamespot says 10/14

but often they forget to update. so it might be out ....or then again they could be right and theres a couple things needed to be done on the pc version.

i prefer multiplayer so i never paid much attention to when this one is out

Why would you wait for the PC version?

It's great on Xbox if you ask me, and by the time it comes out for the PC I'll be done with it on Xbox. :)

By the way, lightsabers own.

Null 07-17-2003 07:49 PM

Re: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Reviews

personally. imo. i'd rather wait and get any game on PC over any console version. get much more for your money.

wish i waited and got GTA Vice City for PC. game looks a lot better, and theres downloads like new cars, weaps. stuff like that.

Shadow_Link 07-17-2003 09:19 PM

My copy should be coming in a week or so. I can't wait to play this game!

Does anyone have any idea how long the game is? I've been hearing it's around as long as SoA:L (80 hours).

Bond 07-17-2003 11:18 PM

Re: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Reviews

It's probably about 40-80 hours, depending on what you do. You have a lot more choices than in SoA:L.

Ginkasa 07-18-2003 12:05 AM

Got mine a few hours ago. I love it!

*POSSIBLE MINOR GAMEPLAY SPOILERS...LIKE...WHAT NOT TO DO OR...SOMETHING :hmm:*

I'm up to the part in the sewers, with the Gamorreans. I just died in a battle with a bunch of them

I've decided to go through with the Light side this first time. So far I think I've done pretty good. The only parts where I think I faltered are:

1) I was going through an apartment complex, found a locked door, spliced the door, went inside, dug through the fooot lockers, and found out I just broke in and robbed from some family >_<

2) I walked into an open apartment and some chick told to me to get out or she'd shoot me. I didn't. We fought. I killed her.

It didn't say anything about Dark points or anything so I don't know if those count or not

Anyway, I'm the sewers and short on Medpacs. I'm thinking about going back up and see if I can't buy any somewhere.

***possible spoilers***

While I'm gone if you guys possibly get stuck on Rancor, you can just go solo mode and run past him or frag him with grenades to death.

***possible spoilers***

Ginkasa 07-18-2003 10:48 AM

*BETTER SPOILERS THAN BOND'S*

Or you can use Mission's stealth mode and go up to the bones in the middle of the room. Than hit A like you're going to loot it. But instead of taking the items, hit X to go to the leave items mode. Leave the stink you got from the arm outside the door to the Rancor room. When that's done, the Rancor will eat the grenade which will explode and kill him instantly. No deaths, no wasted grenades (besides the one that was already there), and plenty of experience for you (lack of) effort.

*ITS OKAY. THEY'RE DONE NOW... BUT ITS NOT LIKE THERE'S GOING TO BE ANYTHING AFTER THE SPOILERS OTHER THAN MY NORMAL......*

I recently bought NCAA Football 2004 for PS2 and that game is completely owning me right now, so I'm gonna wait until payday next week before I purchase this gem. I've been working my ass off for 2 weeks, now...me want money

DeathsHand 07-18-2003 08:30 PM

I knew this game would turn out great... C'mon, it's a Star Wars RPG being made by the folks who brought you Baldur's Gate... Unfortunately I don't have an Xbox... *sniffle*

I hope Fable lives up to it's potential too...

TheSlyMoogle 07-24-2003 01:51 AM

Yeah I'm totally gonna wait for it come out on PC, I have no XBox... Hmm
It's a sad little system... Nothing on it interested me until this game and I'm only a tiny bit into Star Wars.

Yeah so it's like spend 270 some dollars to get the XBOX and KOTOR, or wait for PC version... I'm waiting for PC version. Now if something else is released for XBox that grabs my attention before 10/4, then I'll be all for buying an Xbox.
