The Olympics!

I'm amazed that nobody has made a topic about this yet! I mean, it's in America this time so I thought you guys would care...

Anyway, we got our first gold medal! :D
Our Jochem Uytdehaage was faster than your American guy and the German.

:D:D

Joeiss 02-10-2002 03:02 PM

Damn thats an ugly uniform, but not as ugly as the Canadians'! lol. I have been watching the Olympics, womans snowboarding is on now. I just can't wait until the hockey starts. GO TEAM CANADA!!!

nWoCHRISnWo 02-10-2002 04:23 PM

Here in Canada, I speak for almost everyone when I say nothing matters but hockey.

The_Dunadan 02-10-2002 05:07 PM

is that a guy or a girl?

i like the hockey too, except i prefer team usa.

Perfect Stu 02-10-2002 05:30 PM

wooooo

we just got our first medal

go Canada!

and hockey is where it really matters

Perfect Stu 02-10-2002 05:32 PM

that person in the picture looks like a chick...

but I'm not quite sure :hmm:

Joeiss 02-10-2002 07:17 PM

YEYE... Bronze in skating. Good job Canada.

Damn, 5000 meters!!! That is alot. Those people have got to be dead tired after their races.

Neo 02-11-2002 03:34 PM

The guys doing the downhill are insane. There's no reason to ever go that fast!

Thats what the Downhill is about...going fast...but, anyways, the Downhill is probably my Favorite event, I also Like Bobsled.

Angrist 02-12-2002 08:17 AM

Renate Groenewold won a silver medal on the 3000 meters.
And that guy in the picture is a guy... it's just a bad pic!

Hey, your Americans sure made us laugh yesterday!! The ex ice-hockeyer sure was funny! :D And Kip Carpenter's first name means chicken here! :p (but he did ride a good time, better than our guys) But there's another chance for them today.

Oh yeah, that Wotherspoon or something fel. :(...:)...:D... ;)

Ridley 02-12-2002 09:51 AM

Don't laugh at Jeremy Witherspoon Angrist!

*hits Angrist over the head with a skate*

:D

He was our best chance in speedskating :(. Well there's some other guy that placed fairly well I think but he probably won't win a medal  :(.

Angrist 02-12-2002 10:59 AM

Round 2 begins in 3 or 4 hours, they all get another chance.

Angrist 02-12-2002 03:37 PM

I was wrong. I thought they just got two chance to ride the best time. But they're riding for an average.... too bad for Witherspoon... (;))
Perhaps the Dutch Van Velden has a chance...

Angrist 02-12-2002 05:05 PM

BLAST!!! :( :baby:

It's a nightmare scenario: Van Velden always was placed 4th, often only hundreds of seconds away from a medal, and today it happened again. :errr:

Turambar... (the Dunadan will know what that means)

Those American bast... I mean guys really were lucky...

Oh well, the 1000 meters is more 'our' distance. :)

Joeiss 02-12-2002 07:57 PM

Damn Wetherspoon, I cut out the picture from the paper. He looks like his heart was literally snapped in half... Arms outstretched while he was on the floor... Such a shame.

But he is VERY good in the 1000m race, so he better win that! Or else.:vader:

Neo 02-12-2002 08:32 PM

Did you see that ghost image they ran on the women's downhill? That was awesome! Just like mario kart.

Joeiss 02-12-2002 09:24 PM

Oh, I forgot to mention that whole "scandal" issue about the skating pairs. Canada had a flawless run, but lost to the Russians who I think fell once, but don't quote me on that. So, everybody is saying that the judges goofed up, so this is what I think will happen with the Men's Programs (well, it is what my mom thinks because I don't watch it) : Canadians (Stojko or those chicks who skate) will not win gold even if they deserve it. Why? Because if they do, and there is something just a bit wrong with the performance, everybody will think that the judges gave them the gold to make up for the whole pairs controversy. Meh, makes sense to me.

Oh, and does anybody else here think that Ice Skating should NOT be an Olympic sport? I mean, it is more of a competition, IMO. All of that technical merit and whatnaught shouldn't be in the Olympics.

Well my mom watches ice skating too. I don't, but I did watch the last three (Canadian, Russian and I think Chinese) do the whatever they call it and I have to say, they were robbed. I don't know a whole lot about figure skating but they looked dead on with everything they did and the Russians weren't as good. But you know what? It should be an Olympic competition, it just needs better judging. I mean the European judges have done this to Canadians many times before in skating (at least that's what my mom tells me :D) and they're very biased. And I think that, what's her name Selet? I think she's hot :sneaky:.

*runs away*

Joeiss 02-12-2002 09:58 PM

Selet is amazing! I love her... That is the girl, right? I forgot which one is which... But the girl is damn hot, whatever her name is.

Jason1 02-12-2002 10:26 PM

Somebody needs to find the Medal count and post it...I want to see which country has the most medals...

Joeiss 02-13-2002 03:24 PM

Damn she's hot. And Jason, don't you get the newspaper? It is on the front page of thw whole paper, and on the front page in the sports section as well.

Angrist 02-13-2002 03:49 PM

This night it's the women's turn to do the 500 meters. I'm not so sure about our sprinters this year... but who knows??!

The Germanator 02-13-2002 07:39 PM

I think us Americans have the most medals, or at least were tied for first the last time I saw...

Angrist 02-14-2002 06:51 PM

Am I crazy?

I'm staying up quite late (2 AM) to see the women's 500 meters skating...  :)

nWoCHRISnWo 02-14-2002 06:52 PM

Germany has the most medals. USA and Austria are closely following I think.

Angrist 02-15-2002 04:15 PM

Nah, I heard that Norway or something got the most gold medals...

Andrea Nuyt became 4th... :( Who will be our Ice Queen???

Angrist 02-17-2002 08:30 AM

YEAH!!!

He did it!!!!! He did it!! OMG, that was so great!!!! The guy who always became fourth... The guy that has been skating for over 10 years and never got a medal!!! He got gold on the 1000 meters!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D:D Everybody's so happy for him!!!

Great broadcast!

Joeiss 02-17-2002 09:55 AM

That race was amazing... The finish was one of the most commical things I have seen in sports. Canada got third! Yeah! Thats funny because he was in last until the big crash.

My bad! I was thinking about the 1000 meter short track skating event. Turcotte (Canadian) came in third, and an Australian came in first. I am not sure who came in second, though.

Neo 02-17-2002 01:40 PM

Apollo did. He lunged over the finish line to secure the silver.

Joeiss 02-17-2002 01:53 PM

Hehehe... I love it when skaters crash into eachother.

EDIT : Here is an updated medal rankings.

http://www.cbc.ca/olympics/medals/medal-fulltable

Angrist 02-18-2002 05:37 AM

Nice link.

The women didn't win anything yesterday... Marianne Timmer became fourth... :(

Hey, here's a nice quote from that site you gave:
Quote:

After Cheek, American Kip Carpenter, the surprise bronze medallist in the 500m, was fourth, followed by Erben Wennemars of the Netherlands. The Netherlands may be a skating-mad country, but placing three skaters in the top five is a big accomplishment for the Dutch, who are much better known for their pre-eminence in the distance races rather than the sprints.

Angrist 02-20-2002 03:21 AM

Hey, Uytdenhaage got a silver medal! Your Panna got a gold one and the injured Sondral got the bronze one!

I gotta admitt, Americans are good skaters this year... but your country is muuuuch bigger than ours so we're still the best ;)

Joeiss 02-20-2002 03:58 PM

Belarus beat Sweden!!! HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA... that is some funny stuff. 4-3.... Wow... What an upset. Now Canada has an easy way to gold medal match after they win tonight.

Belarus beat Sweden?!? Hehe.....he........bahahaha!!! Oh man that's sad but so damn funny considering how Sweden looked to be the best team in the round robin and Belarus....well if you know international hockey, you know what I'm talking about ;).

Null 02-20-2002 05:02 PM

Have to say the US looked to be the best team. not sweeden.

sweeden had 1 more win, cuz US tied.

but when looking at stats US has fewer goals against and more goals for.

But i was expecting a Sweeden vs US final. whats next Germany winning a hockey game? :hmm:

The Germanator 02-20-2002 06:54 PM

The craziest thing was Belarus's last goal! Salo completley messed up. Damn, now Canada has an easy way to the finals, so it seems at least, I guess ya never know. And the U.S is up 5-0 now.
