http://www.cube-europe.com/news.php?nid=3850

Basically, these guys are equlivant to best buy not carrying the gamecube anymore.... this is rediculous news... lousy LIMIES!!!

BlueFire 03-10-2003 03:34 PM

That's not very good for the cube..

what the hell does that mean?

some people...

Shadow_Link 03-10-2003 05:24 PM

First off, they aren't a major European chain, just a large chain in the UK. I think they account for just under 20% of cubes sold in the UK.

Another thing is, they stopped selling the GBA a few months back, reason, unknown, must have been something major though... :D

Though I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the following.

I'm pretty sure I heard Nintendo wont let the Dixons group sell the GBA:SP. This is because they decided not to stock the just now released modem/BB adaptor (The first console to officially go online in the UK/Europe).

It's pretty funny really, I'm wondering why they didn't wait just a week or so until Metroid Prime came out.

RE 0 just came out, and it reportedly increased the sales of the GC by quite alot. So they definately should have waited just atleast a month or two longer (Zelda comes out May 3rd).

The last 'big' game that came out here was in.... early November. And that was SFA. So one might expect the sales of the GC to be pretty damn slow.

Jonbo298 03-10-2003 05:31 PM

I think this chain has been brainwashed by MS or Sony:sneaky::D Why would a "major" chain stop selling a product that sells like wildfire (that being the GBA and soon to be GBA:SP), and then stop selling the final product from Nintendo, the GameCube? I smell something fishy.

Anyways... I think that is is quite odd as well. I mean, it is not like GCN is not selling at all in Europe... If anything, a store should just decrease the amount of units which they buy. Meh.

fingersman 03-10-2003 10:26 PM

Ok I think that was uncalled for.

Joeiss 03-10-2003 10:30 PM

LOL. I was wondering when somebody was going to reply to that joke.

GameKinG 03-10-2003 10:48 PM

Hmm...something is odd. And they do it right when the cube free game deal is entated there...They wonder why cube sales are low and this just fuels the fire (of going lower).

In what has to be seen as a defiant success, Nintendo has outsold the Xbox this week in the UK’s software charts, with the GameCube seeing another jump in sales.

Proving that key releases focused on quality counts in what is becoming an increasingly tight mid-market sector, GameCube software sales rose by some 45% in week-on-week comparison, powered largely by Capcom’s all-new Resident Evil. This equates to 49,867 sales, compared to 46,061 Xbox software units sold, a week-on-week drop of 7%.

This was managed despite the release of the hotly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance for Xbox, new at number 13 in the All Formats chart, where Resident Evil Zero entered at number 2.

“We are really pleased with this weeks GameCube software sales which are up 45% on the previous week following the launch of Resident Evil Zero, Sonic Mega Collection and Phantasy Star Online I and II, all exclusive to Nintendo GameCube”, Nintendo European marketing boss Shelly Friend told us this morning. “GameCube hardware sales have also increased this week by 21%. We are now really excited about the upcoming launch of Metroid Prime on March 21 which we expect to be a huge success.”

Perhaps this will make certain sectors of UK retail take note.

Well according to those sites, Dixon hasn't officially dropped the Cube, but more or less but it on careful watch, if the new sale doesn't go well, the Cube will be dropped, let's hope that releasing games will actually make the Cube sell.

fingersman 03-11-2003 06:26 PM

Well after looking at ShadowLinks post it seems as if there is some hope left.

Ok and what does this really show you! By the looks of it nothing I recall SMS doing the same thing over here just to see it die off two weeks later. A game selling more units for a week does not really show a Nintendo come back now does it. Only time will tell if the Big N can do any thing in the UK but for now one game is not going to save them not even Z-WW.

But it's not just Resident Evil: Zero, I think Sonic Mega Collecction and Super Monkey Ball 2 were also recently released, but that's not the point. It gives Nintendo some momentum which I believe will carry over until Metroid is released there in about 2 weeks or so, I don't know what Nintendo has planned for Europe between Metroid and Zeld though.

That's exactly the point. After RE 0 (Sonic Mega collection and SMB2 too!), Nintendo will release Metroid Prime, which comes out in a matter of days now, and then Zelda in just over a month later. This should give the GC alot of momentum over the next coming months.

From the European Xbox release I've seen, there's nothing MS has to combat these two titles. MGS:S lost out to RE 0, and I don't think Panzer Dragoon has enough appeal in Europe to combat Metroid Prime. Then there is Zelda. Now with the competing retailers dropping the price of the Cube to £99 with a free game (to combat Dixons offer), Cube sales are definately going to pick up.

It will be an interesting year.

PuPPeT 03-14-2003 04:09 AM

The price of the cube has never been a problem so i don't see this cut selling to many more units! Not when ever one selling the damn thing are saying the same thing "stay the away from it and get your self and Xbox or PS2". No what I'm trying to say is software is not Nintendo's problem and it has never been a problem for them. Nintendo them selfs are the problem and yes it goes back to the kiddy thing again. No matter what Nintendo says thats how people see them we all know the system has some good games on it but so does Xbox and PS2.

Oh and it's not just PDO coming out in the UK you know?

... That must be the dumbest thing I have ever read. Why do you think the Cube has been outselling the Xbox recently? Because Dixons, Currys, PC World, John Lewis etc are selling the Cube for £99 with a game, which is a whole £30 less...

And now there is another offer in Europe. Buy a GBA:SP and get a 50 Euro ($54 US) rebate on the Gamecube... That's around 35 pound off. Things are going to pick up alot more now.

PuPPeT 03-16-2003 08:00 AM

Oh and as for the price! What price drop PC world which is part of DIXONS has sold the Gamecube for £99 for well over a month now (So has dixons and currys so i'm told). No what is selling Gamecube at the mo is 3 really good games but the hype for games will soon die and so will the sale's your seeing. Nintendo only really has one more big game to come this year (ok it is the big one). But if it did not help them out in Japan that much how is it going to do it over here in the UK.

My bad, I should have stressed the software aspect.

And there are actually 2 big games coming out, not 1. :D

Oh and, please don't double post. :p
