Still ready for that debate?
In two days, you can prepare to be totally and utterly humiliated. After all, the PVG debate team clearly outclasses anything GT can throw at us. But if you want to try to prove us wrong, read on for what you have to do.
There will be four topics of debate that will be discussed in the way outlined in the previous thread. Two of those topics will be submitted by PVG and two will be submitted by GT. Once the submissions are all in, they will be put into random order. That way, both sides will know well ahead of time what's going to be debated on a particular day and will be able to plan accordingly. The PVG team is working on the two debate topics, but we have a pretty good idea of what they will be like. It's time for GT to come up with two topics. Remember, they have to be open ended questions with some substance to them. No "Which console is the best?" questions, please. An example of a topic might be something like "Hiroshi Yamauchi has predicted that there will soon be a shakedown in the videogame industry that drives many companies out of business. Is he right? If so, when is this shakedown going to happen, and how bad is it going to be?" Got the idea? Let's get to it, then. Everything else is ready. We have the fine members of N-sider acting as judges (they don't know any of us, so they're impartial). All we need are your topic submissions. You have two days to decide on them. If you're not too chicken. :D |
Topic 1 : Is Xantar a homosexual? If so, when did he convert, why did he convert, and why did he convert?! If not, then what is keeping him from turning queer?
Topic 2 : Which console is better? The Nintendo GameCube, the Microsoft XBox or the Sony Playstation 2. |
PS2 is definately gonna win.....

Funny? Not In The Least Bit, And Joeiss, Well.....Meh, To dumb.... any REAL members of GT going to reply to this and actually bring this togther again? |
Why do I get the feeling that PVG has already won?
(come on, you've got to come up with a better taunt than that, Xantar!) Okay, here goes again. You guys clearly don't have any balls! *waits* |
You guys seem to be taking this debate thing a bit too serious :hmm:
|
Debate is a pastime for those who feel a need to justify their intelligence through pointless crusades on meaningless topics. Those who truly possess unique and insightful thoughts know that there are more constructive ways to use them then on attempting to one-up egotistical windbags.

I am pretty sure that you are the one who has no balls. Or at least you don't use them. |
Maybe this is getting out of hand... ;)

Carry on. :p |
Hmm... first you make something up, search for a rival, can't find any and then declare that you've won. That's dumb.

Eh, there was a group of members who said they would debate with us (and moreover that they would win). If they aren't going to show up now, what are we supposed to think? You can't just say that they don't care because obviously they did care at the time.
I respectfully suggest that the members who aren't involved in the debate stay out of this. |

Make me. :p Shadow Link, Bond, Kitana, BreakABone, ..... Hmmm..... But Xantar, were my two topics okay? Are you guys going to use them in the debate? EDIT : How come the PVG website doesn't work for me? I clicked on Marc's sig, and the website didn't pop up... It just went to a blank page... |
Okay, let me explain this clearly for you guys since some of you seem to have misunderstood what's going on.
We members of PVG often get into debates. There isn't anything formal about it. It just happens. When we disagree, we tell each other so and then start discussing our different opinions until we're satisfied that we understand each other even if we still don't necessarily agree with each other. These debates don't arise because we are out trying to prove our intellectualy superiority. They never have. We just like debating because we think it's fun and it makes us think. Two weeks ago, we decided to issue a challenge to GT for a debate in the same spirit. That thread can be found here Be sure to read the entire thing so that you know what's going on, but in the meantime, I'm going to point out this particular quote. Quote:
So let me sum up again. We like debating and we decided to ask some members of GT if they would like to join a competition for debate's sake as well. Now ask yourself why we chose GT of all places. If we just wanted to stroke our egos, we could have gone after XBA or TeamXbox or heck just challenge the entire IGN boards. But we didn't. We wanted a good debate against people whom we knew would put up a fight and maybe even win. Because that's the kind of debate you learn and grow from. And we thought the GT members could provide just that very debate. Well, as it turned out, some GT members were interested in such a debate with us. Four of them, to be exact (I'm not including BreakABone because...well, just read the thread). So the teams having been drawn up, we realized that we hadn't ironed out all the kinks in the debate rules yet. So we postponed the date to the 20th (tomorrow). Nobody, and I mean nobody, raised any objections whatsoever. Read the thread I linked to if you don't believe me. Therefore, we thought that the GT members had agreed to meet with us in a debate tomorrow. Yesterday, I made this thread containing a little boasting in good fun and a clearer explanation of how the debate was going to work. None of it was new. It's all there in the old thread. I just wanted to remind the GT members that they would have an opportunity to decide some of what the debate would be about. So let's go over your concerns again. Have we challenged GT to a pointless exercise so that we could stoke our egos? No. I have made it abundantly clear that we wanted to do this for debate's own sake, and apparently so did the members of the GT team. Have we just gone out looking for a rival and then declared ourselves the winner when we couldn't find one? No. We did find an opponent, and it appeared to us that we were all agreed on the time when it would happen. That time is coming and we find that nobody seems to even remember the debate and nobody is even going to say something like "On second thought, we're going to back out. We're just not interested." Instead, we get nothing for a reply from any of the members of the GT debate team. This is not only bad form, it could be interpreted as an admission of defeat by some people (not me. I was just joking). Now if the GT members would like us to think something different, it's not all that hard to convince us. |

in other words....PS2's gonna win:p :D |
After reading the ignorance in this thread, I am reminded why I don't post here at GT that often anymore.
|
Xantar. I wasn't joking.
Anyways.......................... I am not part of the debate team, but here is a topic that you can use. And of course, these won't be like my previous 2. Topic 1 : A ten year old kid sees American soldiers fighting against the Taliban in Afghanistan. The Taliban are America's enemy. The kid has enemies too, the bullies at his school. The ten year old decides to eliminate the threat of bullies at his school. The next day, he brings in his father's hand gun to school and shoots eight of his peers. Four die, two are in critical condition, and two were only knicked in their arms. The two kids that are in critical condition were not bullies, but just got in the way. Now, is this kids actions justified? He sees these American soldiers proclaimed as heros for killing Taliban soldiers. This kid wants to be a hero himself, and in his mind he is now one. |

1: My sig is from WarCraft III.
2: Xantar, you tell you debate because it's fun, but you've always brought this this as a match or a challenge. Doesn't sound very fun to me. 3: yeah this forum is ignorant, but don't say it because they'll bash you. 4: if only I'd live in the same time zone as you I'd join, but I'm never online when you Americans do your thing. |
Quote:
The American soldiers can kill Taliban "soldiers" because they're crazy camel-****ing morons who won't do anything in life except plan how to drive more planes into America or kill themself for Allah. |
Umm... that was a debate topic... For the debate.... But yes. I guess you can answer that here......
And just to make sure, are all the Taliban camel-****ing morons? |

In all those matches, have you never seen someone saying "We're the greatest. We will rock you" (or whatever the equivalent is in Dutch) before the match. I'll bet you have. I'll also bet you've heard that kind of thing from friends who mean absolutely no offense. It's just smack talk that people do all in the fun of a competitive spirit. You've probably seen soccer matches where people throw that kind of stuff aroud and yet they are just out there to have fun and get a little exercise. I'm sorry if you didn't see it that way, but I honestly thought it was pretty clear. A little confident talk is part of the game. |
Debates are pointless, especially if you are argueing a point for somthing you don't agree with... after a while most debates turn into pointless fights about things off subject... well, those are the debates I'm in...
:) -end of pointless post- -?- |
You and your pointless arguments...
Just watch this thread turn into a debate over debates. |

I really must have been away from these forums for a LONG time.
Because I remember Xantar as one of the moderators of this forum. And back then, he seemed like a loyal patron (not that his visiting and hanging out at other forums somehow dilutes his loyalty here) and a nerving defender of this site. What I see now is a patron of another site coming to GT to stir up controversy (albeit a friendly one). What happened? And what the hell is PVG? And on a personal note, I think debates between two forums are laborious at best. Now an inter-forum feuding and flaming, you got my number with that one! |

Well, I retired mainly to concentrate on writing fan fiction and because I thought I had been a mod for quite long enough (any longer and I'm sure people would have started to get sick of me). I do happen to have a mod position at PVG, but that's in the Fan Fiction Forum which is pretty much dead except for my fanfics and the World News Forum which is even more dead.
Anyways, looks like the debate won't happen. It was supposed to be about videogames, just so you guys know. I suppose Joeiss' idea about Afghanistan was a worthy topic, but it wasn't what we were looking for. I'm sorry to have started up all this. But I still wish the members of the GT team had taken just a little time to tell me that they're not interested. |
The debate was supposed to be about videogames? Now, I am sorry, but I think that is just sad. I mean, if a little debate gets started in a videogame thread, that is cool. But if you actually plan one, that is just stupid.
|
I think I said three weeks ago that GT had shirked this PVG promotion off and refused invitation. Oh well, some must be told by twice. :-o

Off topic, but the whole debate thing sounds pretty goofy. GL anyway. db |
There was a big debate awhile ago at PVG over video games that consisted of more sites. Did that ever happen?
|
It was going to happen, but the Xbox team backed out at the last minute. I forget which site they were from. It might have been TeamXbox. PVG itself wasn't participating in that one, merely hosting. All the same, it's a pity.
*thinks about the average intelligence of TeamXbox members* On second thought, maybe not. |
Heh, maybe you should have gotten Xboxaddict...
|
For those of you that don't know, I am Indigo Montoya, the XBox forum mod, over at PVG. I am also a quite loyal member of these forums as well.
After reading this thread I have to say I am greatly dissappointed by GT's response to a activity that actually promotes intelligent conversation and personal growth. Not only has the response been dissappointing, but I think much of it in this thread has been embarrassing to other members of GT. Xantar enjoys a mature, intelligent argument in which both sides benefit from, so he's GAY? Well I guess if thats the response we receive, then a mature intelligent conversation could never happen with GT. Joeiss, you say how much you don't like debates, yet you offer topics. You obviously are interested or you wouldn't have bothered. So why not join in? I have my own theories on that matter... I had truly hoped to actually try and recreate some of the mental stimulation I enjoyed in college through lively discussion and debate, but I now see that even if the debate happened, that would be impossible. I would like to apologize to any GT members who are as dissappointed as I am in the response we at PVG have received in this proposal. These comments were not directed at you. |
Not that everyone here's stupid or anything (I'm probably the dumbest one here anyways ;) ), but methinks that if Xantar wants to have a nice good intelligent yada yada big long discussion, a videogame forum isn't necesarily the best place for it to take place... :sneaky:
For some reason it bugs me when someone comes to a videogame forum and is all like big'n'bad, intelligent, very mature, etc... and is all like... I dunno :hmm: "Let's hold a debate! Oh nobody wants to participate? Hahaha chickens!"... Like he's being an ass and rubbing it in someone's face... or something... What's the point of the debate anyways? To prove you're better than us or something? I guess some people would say "They're fun!" or something, but chances are most people here couldn't care less about a debate, and probably have more fun arguing like this then they would actually debating ;) Just like the whole "Insightful post" thing for getting doubloons that Xantar seemed to like to promote (well, kinda)... I don't come to a videogame forum to be all insightful and stuff, I come to have fun and just chat with other people about videogames... I mean I don't want to read a bunch of short, stupid replies, but we don't have a bunch of short, stupid replies here... Anyways I'll shut up now... |
I'm sorry you don't like to think. I'll try and use one syllable words when speaking here from now on. J/K:D
If it ain't your bag, then it ain't your bag, but don't sit and make judgements of people who actually like to have intelligent conversations, no matter what forum they are in. There are members of GT who agreed to the debate, so obviously there was interest. Xantar's playful ribbing was just that, playful. It was meant to bring those GT members who had agreed to the debate in the earlier thread out of the woodwork. But claiming he, or any other PVG member for that matter, only wanted to do the debate to make themselves look smart is silly. If you had bothered to read his explanations on this thread you would realize this. By dismissing the whole idea as PVG ego stroking you only make yourself appear insecure. |
