Damn the Fall is Going to be Expensive

Last night, I was writing down what videogames I want for late summer and fall. I also worked out the prices, and I added some accesories too! I am going to make my room an ultimate gaming room, and by Christmas my room is going to rock. :) By the way, I was going to post this in the General Forum, but it has to do with videogames, so I just decided to post it here so everybody can post what games they are getting. Here's my list :

PS2 Network Adaptor -- 59.99
SOCOM : US Navy Seals -- 84.99
NBA 2K3 -- 79.99
GTA : VC -- 74.99
Ratchet and Clank -- 69.99
Time Splitters 2 -- 79.99
Router -- 139.99
Ethernet cables -- 59.99
27'' T.V -- 359.99

Total : $ 1, 009.91

Adding 15% for taxes, and I will be spending a grand total of $ 1, 161.40.

Damn... That is a lot of money! But I am willing to buy all this stuff to make boredom go away. :D

So, how much will you be spending this fall on videogames and accesories?

gekko 08-03-2002 07:58 PM

You're catching on. Online gaming isn't exactly cheap for those who aren't connected already. Router + wires + headaches setting up a network. Hehe.

I just finished setting myself up today. Got a new 5 port hub (pocket sized, really neat), and stuck that in the room with my games. Ran a 50 foot cable through my ceiling and into the computer room where my router in. Got my Xbox and DC hooked up and working. My PS2 has a cable sitting next to it. And my GC one is being used by the computer I have sitting there temporarily. I'm good to go.

I am personally slowing down this fall. I want to spend more time on certain games, and try to branch off into game genres that I don't play as much. I'll be spending a lot of time mastering SMB2, and finishing off the CT3 contest that I'm in. Gonna play quite a bit of SOCOM. I seem to hate every PS2 game except SOCOM :D I'll also be busy with PSO.

So I'm getting less game this fall. Although less game for me turns out to still be a lot. Only 4 next month :(

That is sweet, man! You have everything ready to go... Since you have everything set up, can you tell me which ethernet cables you purchased? Because I am really clueless on that. Thanks man.

gekko 08-03-2002 08:22 PM

I wouldn't spend too much time looking into purchasing ethernet cables. Anyway, I got Belkin Cat 6.

Anyway, I was at CompUSA, and I noticed the Cat 6 support gigabit ethernet. Since my l33t G4 is the only computer that supports gigabit ethernet, and my router doesn't anyway, they wouldn't get much use (aka I wouldn't get higher speeds). But then I looked at Belkin's Cat 5e cables, and they were (for some strange reason), more expensive. Also, as long as we're at stupid pricing, the 14' cable was about $1.50 more than the 7' cable. Stupid, but at least I got longer cables if I need them in the future.

Anyway, you should be fine with whatever. I oped not to get the cheapo in bag packaging that looked like it could be sold at Wal-Mart, but that's just me. I got the ones in the blister packs, they looked higher quality.

No matter what, for a home network, you're really not going to go wrong no matter what you choose. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Joeiss 08-03-2002 08:27 PM

Sounds good, gekko. I'll be browsing probably tomorrow for routers and cables. Cat5, eh? I shall look into those. And I think I need about 50 feet... Or maybe 40... From my basement to my room.

BlueFire 08-03-2002 10:19 PM

I don't know if I'm getting into Online gaming that quickly, but a lot of awesome GC titles are coming out this year and next and some great PS2 RPGs... How will I get this money? :eyes:

Drunk Hobbit 08-03-2002 10:29 PM

I will spend $5. No less. No more.

Okay, I am confused about the PS2 Modem. It obviously has no port to plug in a cable wire so does this mean that you have to do this:
-----(cable-wire)----|CABLE MODEM|----[ethernet-wire]---PS2

Because the modem only has a phone line prot and an ethernet port. If I am understanding what you guys are saying (maybe I'm not), whats the point of buyin a router? (Okay I dont know a lot about PCs and cables and stuff so give me a break). Unless the router is for ethernet wires?

Originally, it would be like this:
----(cable-wire)----|CABLE MODEM|---[ethernet-wire|---PC

Someone please explain.

Perfect Stu 08-04-2002 10:54 AM

since I already have the network adapter and madden 2003 paid for, this is what I'm looking at:

(All numbers in CDN dollars)

PS2:

SOCOM: $85
Kingdom Hearts: $75
Ratchet and Clank: $60
GTA: Vice City: $75

Xbox:

NFL2K3: $75
Splinter Cell: $75
Panzer Dragoon Orta: $75
Blinx: Time Sweeper: $75
One Year of XBox Live!: $75

So that's...$670 plus taxes

Granted, I will probably be getting a couple for Christmas, so let's take away $225 plus taxes

That's still $445 plus taxes

*looks at $1000 pay check*

*phew*

Crono 08-04-2002 12:06 PM

Heres my list for this fall/early winter:

GC
---
SMS: $70
SFA: $70
Metroid: $70
NHL 2K3: $70
PSO: $70
BB Adapter: about $50 methinks
PSO Controller/Keyboard: about $45 I guess

PS2
-----
Grandia Xtreme: $70
Legaia 2: Duel Saga: $70
SOCOM: $85
Kingdom Hearts: $70
Suikoden III: $70
PS2 Modem: :$50

*realizes he doesn't have a job yet*

:(

PS2 has a 56K modem, and then a NIC card. Very, very few cable modems and DSL (technically) bridges are internet. Most of them are external, and despite the stupid people who decided to make USB modems, most of them connect via ethernet.

Since you use cable. Your cable wire will go into your external cable modem. From there, your ethernet wire will be connected to whatever (router, PC, PS2). PS2 only has an ethernet port because ethernet is like the universal format for broadband.

What a router does is allows you to hook up multiple devices to it via ethernet cable, and then have all of those connect to your modem. So you can hook up your PS2 and PC to the router, and then connect the router to the modem. It also uses only 1 IP address, so ISPs can't charge you for more.

See, this is really going to be the downfall of online gaming for consoles. Sure broadband is the way to go, but there's only a small group of these gamers who will be able to go online without problems. Not everyone realizes they'll need to add over $100 more to setup a network first. On top on that, not everyone knows how to setup a network. And god forbid you try to market to casual gamers.

MS and Sony better come out with some sort of easy router, that the average joe blow an setup. Otherwise, they will be hurting.

I understand now, thanks. But, isnt there a device that lets you play GC/PS2 or whatever on your PC Monitor. What I was thinking, since my desk is pretty big, I was gonna move my GC and PS2 onto my desk, and just use that device...and then simply unplug my ethernet wire whenever I need it. Much less expensive than buying a router and extra wires.

You would need a VGA adapter, and something to get sound.

For VGA adapter and GC, you need to like split the wires from a RGB cable, and do something with it. Tis weird.

Nevermind then, I'll just do it the easier way by putting a TV near my PC. (I dont feel like buyin a longer ethernet wire)...

gekko 08-04-2002 11:32 PM

You must not have a good setup. I did that with PSO, and it sucks. I played the game on a 13" TV.

No way in hell I'll do that again. I'll leave behind a HDTV and surround sound for a cheesy TV.

Crono 08-04-2002 11:35 PM

Well I have a spare 19" (I think its 19, or 18, whatever) and I'll be sitting directly in front of it so it shouldn't be that bad...

Exactly. I could use my television in the basement, which is a pretty good size (about 25"), but it is really old and has green lines always moving on it. I wouldn't want to see those when I am kicking some ass online.

I think Red Faction 2 comes out in November.... Don't quote me though...

Drunk Hobbit 08-07-2002 09:07 PM

Why does Nintendo do this? A year of crap and semi decent games. And then they shoot out million sellers one right after the other. Tis not fair me tells ya. Tis not fair!

08-09-2002 12:47 AM

I tried to cut it down to the absolute minimium. There are more games that I want to get, but these are the essentials.

all prices include 8.75 city of chicago/state of IL/ Cook County tax.

GCN
Super Mario Sunshine 49.36 (already paid 5$ in june)
Super Monkey Ball 2 54.36
Metroid Prime 54.36

Xbox
Panzer Dragoon Orta 54.36
Splinter Cell 54.36
Mech Assault 54.36
Sega GT 2002 54.36

GBA
Metroid Fusion 32.61(29.99 for first party title)
Castlevania HoD 38.05 (34.99 for thrid party title

384.57$

Could be worse

I have about 110 saved

274.57

and If I can get 200 of that in b day/ christmas gifts I can get it down to

74.57 so I'm not that far away

but, then there are a bunch of other games to get.

this bring my list to:
StarFox Adventures-50
Super Monkey Ball 2-50
Sonic Mega Collection-50

Grand total of 150 bucks. i won't have anything to buy for X-Mas.
