Square Enix goes insane with Final Fantasy XIII

I know it's a lot to take in since it's not subtitled or anything, but I'll agree with BaB when he says Square Enix is going crazy.

Considering the fact that I can't tell if this is all pre-rendered or not, and that it actually looks enjoyable with the gameplay shots...this might not be bad. Not bad at all.

Yeah, I am not a huge fan of Final Fantasy, but this one just seems so out there, that may have to check it out.

One part where fighting a bike... then another when someone uses a car as his summon/special/attack, not even sure.

I don't understand how making a beautiful, enjoyable-looking game makes them crazy.

It's the fact that they just took the old stuff and brought in this new entry and kicked the old stuff in the balls and said "FUCK YOU I'M ON SPEED AND I'M RUNNING THIS SHIT".

It's an interesting step, and probably a good one since it looks enjoyable like you said.

Does anyone doubt that this will look as good for the 360? I just don't know since I can't tell what's pre-rendered or not.

I can wait.. I don't like how sappy the trailer is, but to each his own.

I really enjoyed FFIX because there was next to no romance.

See: FFXIII for a bad example of romance.

Always excited for a new Final Fantasy. I'll admit the transforming shit is bizarre looking, though. I mean it's one thing to ride a transformed horse like one of them, that's kinda neat, but a hotrod and a motorcycle? Bizarre, I don't know. I guess one of the themes is about nature being fused with human technology or something. I hope we don't get some bullshit lecture about how nature is good and industry is bad, yadda yadda.

Other than that, game looks beautiful, battle system looks badass, and I heard whispers of the old-school world map making a return. Very excited.

Did you mean FFXII? Because while there's little to no romance in 12, there's definitely romance in 9.

To be honest I think this is their harkening towards the people that were nuts about FF7 because they strayed away from the technologically advanced dystopia in the more recent games. The closest they got to that was Zanarkand in FFX and you were only there in the beginning and the end.

I think this could be big. I think FF12 was fun for a while but it got dull and it was downright hard with the skill advancement and Gambit system. Maybe we'll see improvements?

I agree. I was nuts about FF7-FF9, not so much since then. Can't wait for this one, though. Hopefully a release date is nailed down soon for NA. Q1 2010 is too vague.

Everyone enjoys a love story, what are you some kind of heartless bastard?!

Also this game looks awesome, I really hope it's the final fantasy that brings back everything I loved about final fantasy.

There will be tons of cutscenes in this game. :p

Anyway I think the game looks very nice right now, almost a guarantee I'll pick this one up.

Battle system looks similiar to FFXII.

I had some fun with that one

It doesn't just look like FFXII. In fact I don't really think it looks anything like it.

The Final Fantasy games go in stages. The early ones (SNES) were more medieval and magical. 7-8 were semi-technological. 9-10 were fantasy with no technology. 12 was medieval. 13 is back to technology.

DarkMaster 09-29-2009 11:13 PM

Re: Square Enix goes insane with Final Fantasy XIII

Well it was Sakaguchi who wanted to do more technological FF titles (he's the creator of the series, by the way, Lost Odyssey too) He started it with 6, more with 7, and 8 was apparently his favorite, also the last one he was really involved with. Then 9, 10, 11, 12 were kind of blends of both medieval and technological. 13 is by far the most technological they've gone with the series, it would appear. I fully expect a more "medieval" setting for 15.

Nice try. Zidane + Garnet 4ever.

You may be thinking of XII (12)?

Watching that trailer makes me wonder if FFXIII is a game or a movie.

I would watch the movie, but I wouldn't play the game.

Also, FFCCTCB looks like a lot more fun gameplay-wise.

I don't know. It just looks like more of the same spikey haired, pre-teen jailbait, melodramatic, "Gaia" centered horse-crap to me.

Well, obviously. It's not aimed at people who grew up with the franchise, it's aimed at younger gamers. Thusly making the perfect "protagonist age" somewhere between 15 and 18. Just like the characters in almost every other game.

Hmm, I didn't finish FFIX. That must explain it.

I never played FFXII, hmm. I need to beat a ton of others first anyways.

I think another big problem besides the Gambit system is the fact that they tried to make the overworld and battle system mimic the fighting in FFXI. Bad idea. It tends to get kinda boring after a while.

I think IGN put it best when they said that the game would have been great if it was about a 20-25 hour playthrough.

The production value, story and voice over was nothing short of phenomenal. Wonderful, smart dialogue, and a visual masterpiece.
