Is There a Bad Mario Game?

This is an IGN article that examines the mainline series (I'm sure the debate would be pretty easy if you opened it up to spin-offs and stuff) but this just looks at the core titles.

I wish people wouldn't hate on Mario Sunshine so hard. Admittedly, it is my least favorite Mario game. But I honestly don't think it's a bad game in the least. It was the least accessible, mainly because the concept behind it was Japanese-type weird, and not in the charming way that so many Japanese concepts are.

It was still a very solid platformer, and I would argue that one fact in and of itself saves it from being a bad game. It's an fantastic execution of a bad concept.

Re: Is There a Bad Mario Games?

In terms of "Core" Mario games, it can be a near tie between SMB2 and Sunshine. Sunshine still was overall a good game but the idea didn't pan out like it could have. SMB2 just because the US version was way out of left field...

Super Mario Brothers 2, Sunshine, many of the spin-offs.

We aren't counting spin-offs because the site didn't count spinoff.

I don't get the hate for Sunshine and SMB 2 though. Sunshine until Galaxy had one of my favorite boss battles (the rollercoaster ride) as long as some awesome substages with the platforming bit. Granted, the game was like a re-tread of SM64 with a way too large overworld, but still enjoyable.

SMB 2 I know gets hate for being so different, but I mean taking at the time there were only two games.. its only when you compare it to 3 and World.

Re: Is There a Bad Mario Games?

Considering that most of us here were 2 years of age or younger at the time of Super Mario Bros. 2, I think it's laughable that anybody would list it as a bad game.

No one here had the credibility or capability to assess it.

And no, revisiting the game in the future does not count. You cannot review an old game in the future.

The minimum age for being able to review a game: 10 years of age

Super Mario Bros. 2 release date: 1988 North America, 1989 Europe, 1992 Japan

Anyone born after 1978 offering an opinion of Super Mario Bros. 2: Disqualified!

Well I was at least 7 when i got to play it, cus i remember getting it along with smb 3, and if smb 3 came out in 1990 i was at least 7, assuming i got it that same year.... so even though i am disqualified by your standards, i still loved super mario brothers 2, granted i only gave it a chance cus i lost smb 3 for about a month in some old drawers.

Nonsense. I played it a lot when I was about 8-10. And after that.
And I didn't hate it.

I guess the least favorite has to be SMS, even though it was still pretty fun.

Re: Is There a Bad Mario Game?

Super Mario Sunshine was full of great gameplay. I don't know what rating scale people use when they say "bad", but I consider it really good for what it was. I even prefer it to Galaxy in some regards.

I honestly don't know how you can call something bad when there's a million stinkers out there. On Gamecube alone, you have Shadow the Hedgehog, Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble, Geist, Turok: Evolution, Virtua Quest, Charlie's Angels, and Pokemon Channel. Those are bad. Mario Sunshine? Disappointing, at best. Bad? No.

Honestly, I think people were just craving more after Luigi's Mansion. And Luigi's Mansion was great on its own. People just wanted more.

Re: Is There a Bad Mario Game?

I don't see the problem with Mario Sushine. Not enough platforming? Maybe, but the game was great (story aside, I played the Japanese version and didn't get any of it).

Did you make this thread to ask our opinions of what Mario games we didn't like solely so you could disagree with us any time we offered a negative opinion of a Mario game?

Re: Is There a Bad Mario Game?

I don't know if this was technically a bad Mario game, but there really wasn't much to it. I did have fun playing it when I was a kid, but..I do like geography a lot, so that might be part of it. Anyway, the game I'm talking about is Mario is Missing. I'm not necessarily saying it was bad, but it definitely didn't have a lot of gameplay in it. How many of you have actually played it?

I played Mario is Missing on my old IBM Aptiva. I don't remember a lack of gameplay. However, I wasn't old enough to understand most of it. I'm sure if I revisited it, it would seem shallow.

I'm not really seeing the issue with this? :ohreilly:

But no, it was not the intention of the thread... it kind of developed that way.

I guess we could shrug with my mindless indifference to each other's opinions.

Yes, that is far more attractive than a little passionate disagreement.

The Germanator 02-18-2009 11:59 PM

Re: Is There a Bad Mario Game?

Hmm. I think the definitive answer is no, there is not a bad Mario game. Sunshine is easily my least favorite, but it would be an amazing stretch in my mind to call that a "bad" game.

I know SMB 2 is what was released in the US, but I judge SMB 2 by the Lost Levels which is an absolutely brilliant and difficult game. SMB 2 is what it was, which was Doki Doki Panic, I dunno, I just can't judge it by that.

Anyway, SMB 1, brilliant, SMB 3, fantastic, SM World (my favorite Mario game), SM 64, brilliant. Sunshine, just okay.

Still, just okay compared to the rest is still not "bad"...Yeah..

Also, I haven't played Galaxy more than 3 minutes in a demo at a gaming store, so I can't judge that one unfortunately.

The Spinto Band doesn't even have enough money to buy a Wii with SMG. :(

Super Mario World had some awesome levels and puzzles. I also loved the names of some of the levels. The Star world area was cool too. Top Secret Area!!

Re: Is There a Bad Mario Game?

Ok so...

Stop hating on SMB2. That game was so much fun when I was a kid. I still enjoy it.

Mario 64 was just freaking amazing.

After that I would say it's all gone downhill.

I really didn't enjoy galaxy or sunshine.

I mean galaxy just made me feel ill for a lot of the game, and the other part felt like I was playing a prettier M64.

What can I say?

Angrist 02-20-2009 04:04 AM

Re: Is There a Bad Mario Game?

You can start by saying why SMG made you feel ill.

KillerGremlin 02-21-2009 04:07 PM

Re: Is There a Bad Mario Game?

Super Mario 64 was the height of innovation for Mario post-2D.

Bad Mario game is bad phrasing. I mean, it is Nintendo's flagship character. They don't slack when they crap out a Mario title.

That said, I replayed Sunshine several months ago and it was pretty damn fun. The graphics are especially awesome. I think the game got bad reviews largely because people compared it to the P-E-R-F-E-C-T Mario 64. Oh...and it was not set in the Mushroom Kingdom.

The camera angles and changes during most of the gravity portions of the game actually gave me motion sickness. Which is a first for a game by the way. I don't even get car sick, even while reading/playing DS.

Angrist 02-25-2009 04:19 AM

Re: Is There a Bad Mario Game?

Hm that's weird.
I got really really sick when I played Turok for too long. I guess it had a very low framerate. Oh and Half Life 2 on my old PC. Somehow the game chose for a high-res + low-fps. :(

No, it wasn't.

It was very bland for a Mario game. And repetitive.

I thought it was a bit easy, but still good. It even added a few new gameplay bits (mini-mushrooms for secrets).
