Public Service Announcement: Profanity in Happy Hour

Hey guys.

Being the buzzkiller that I am, I'm going to be setting some ground rules for the Happy Hour board regarding profanity. This isn't necessarily a forum wide policy, but you may as well get in the habit.

Profanity isn't out of control, but it's definitely making a bigger appearance on the board than it has in recent years. It's not that I don't swear, but in moderation and only when it's appropriately expressive. One of the things I've always appreciated at Gametavern is the fact that the members maintained a level of decency on the boards without the need for administrative moderation. With new members joining the forum, censorship is becoming more of a concern. Both in the profanity they bring to the forums, and what they take from the forums and use elsewhere. There are no age restrictions to join Gametavern and a degree of care needs to be taken. Aside from that, I think it's just common courtesy to keep it clean.

I'm not after anybody, I'm just making a statement that I'd appreciate it if you guys would try to moderate yourselves. If there's a problem, I will first edit the offending post and send a PM. If it continues, more action may be necessary, but I really am very lax with using my moderating abilities. General rule of thumb, ask yourself if your post is in good taste and if you can't really say yes then you should probably revise it.

Thanks,
Eric

Friendly underwater cats.

Its a quote form Harvey Birdman attourney at law when his boss ran over a guy everyday that week on his way to work. He was taking an eye test.

Profanity pretty much covers the three major 4-letter words, right?

Because, if so, I'll be fine. Innuendos are more fun anyway.

I was just joking, trying to sound like a kid who had just heard someone curse. But right now, I can't tell if you're joking or not :)

While there are no age restrictions, anyone under the age of 13 must have parental permission.

This isn't pertinent to topic at hand but I just thought it was funny that a fax or mailed letter with a parental signature is required. I mean, really, how do you enforce that? Do you really think Neo has ever received one? :lolz:

It's a federal law. The COPPA Registration System.

Just curious if there has been any instances when youd have to use the form... :P

Why not make use of the censorship tools available in the forum software? I like to use them to filter out racial slurs and convert them to innocent terms like "puppy" and "Puerto Rico."

Haha, no.

And Jim, that's a good idea. Maybe we should have everyone post what words they find offensive and we could build a censor database from that.

Well, if we can't have honest discussion about what offends us, I'm not so sure if we'll really get anywhere.

When did swearing become accepted on the boards even?

One day nobody was because we had rules against it then bam, people started

Alright then, I'm really not easily offended, so I've got nothing to list. People should say what they want as long as their not ignorant pricks about it. IMO of course.

I was never sure on the whole "cussing thing" because I never saw anyone do it, but I never saw it spoken against. So I noticed one cuss word one day and just assumed it was ok... so oops?

I have always used bad words. I swear by swearing. But if I have to, I will have sworn by swearing.

You either express yourself with 4-letter words of expression, or you come up with something witty. I am the epitome of lazy, so I chose to swear. However, if I have to, grilled cheese.

It's true. I go along with the idea of censoring out every possible swear word because I will then use them and have my posts full to the brim with vague and mysterious asterisks.

Wonderful compromise.

Re: Public Service Announcement: Profanity in Happy Hour

I avoided swearing for a long time here. In real life too.

But after struggling for so long trying to convey certain opinions with wholesome words, I just feel like there are certain instances where using a swear word is just so much more effective for trying to encapsulate what you want to express.

I've found it much easier to communicate with people in the 15-25 year-old demographic. That might have something to do with modern culture.

I feel bad knowing that if offends some people. But I never do it around old people or young children.

I guess it depends on who you're speaking with.

1. Nintendo's online structure is lacking and leaves a lot to be desired.

2. Nintendo's online setup is so fucking lame and shitty.

In my opinion, sentence 2 is far more effective at expressing the dismal state of Nintendo Wii Connect and the narrator's disappointment with it.

*shrugs*

I don't verbalize expletives nor do I often write them. Even if I were to stub my toe or receive a flying pigeon to the back of the head, I'll usually say "fudge monkey" or "monkey soup" or something else that sounds really stupid and usually contains "monkey." I need to start cursing.

Yeah I like that idea as well. Woot does that with their forums, and they always give me a laff. Here are some examples

g-a-y = pleasantly upbeat
l-o-l = llo
d-i-c-k = beautiful tulip
p-e-n-i-s = penis
p-u-s-s-y = neon angry mole
f-u-c-k = frak
s-h-i-t = Manos, the Hands of Fate
d-a-m-n = damn
b-i-t-c-h = grumble and/or bemoan fate
n-i-g-g-e-r = Hey look, ma, I'm a racist!
c-u-n-t = muffin
b-a-l-l-s = orbs
v-a-g-i-n-a = vagina
c-o-c-k = purty scarf
s-l-u-t = homey don't play that
a-s-s-r-a-p-e = assrape
f-a-g = frog
f-a-g-g-o-t = frogger
O-M-G = Ovaltina, my goat
W-T-F = PAAAaaaAAaaaanCAAAAAKES!
B--O--C = Blushing Over Compliments
a-s-s-h-o-l-e = ratholes

They also tend to change some of them at their whim.

One expression I find very offensive is: OMFG.

God doesn't have sexual intercourse.

Teuthida 06-02-2008 11:22 AM

Re: Public Service Announcement: Profanity in Happy Hour

You know I never thought of the literal meaning of OMFG. I just considered it to be a normal exclamation to a higher degree than OMG would be. You just blew my mind a little bit. Not that I like either one. More for the excessive overuse of such acronyms than for being blasphemies.
