Wherein Stonecutter rushes to the defense of Nintendo

Best New Console
Sony PlayStation 3

Console launch years only come around twice a decade or so, and they're always guaranteed to be exciting years. The 360 matured dramatically since this time last year and its second-generation titles like Gears of War and CoD3 made the PlayStation 3's job of shocking the world with its immense power rather difficult.

Nintendo's Wii launched to massive mainstream applause and a lot of hope has been placed in the potential for gaming innovation via the console's unique controller. Nintendo disappointed some, however, by choosing not embrace HDTV or to compete with Sony and Microsoft in processing power. The Wii can't even play normal DVDs.

Judging the consoles based upon a broad perspective that includes software now available and coming in the future an entirely different argument could be formulated. However, from a hardware perspective, the PS3 is by far the more interesting console. Though the launch software hasn't blown anyone away, the 360's launch titles were equally unimpressive, and the system will certainly mature. Sony's embrace of the PS3 as a computer rather than just a console, and the availability of supported Linux distributions for the console will also develop and will likely bear entirely unexpected fruit in future.

Runner-Up:
Nintendo Wii
Sure, PS3 could end up being the best of the 3 "next gen" consoles, but how can there be any question at this point that it is unequivocally the WORST of the three? There's one game worth playing on the system, and it sure as hell isn't worth $600. The launch was horrible, a significant number of people have had issues with the systems bricking.

So the wii can't play DVDs, that was a valid complaint with the gamecube because DVD's were still somewhat special in 2001, but for ****s sakes, you can get a DVD player for 40 bucks at Walgreens. ON WII YOU CAN DOWNLOAD MARIO 64 AND BROWSE THE WEB!

I know you can't spell ignorant without IGN, but come on.

I have to agree with you. Wii by far had the better launch. It has better software right now. Better sales right now. Pretty much better everything right now (except hardware and advertising). How can it not be the "best new console" of the year? The only thing they based that on was the hardware, which is stupid. Not that I care what IGN thinks anyway but still, come on......

Oh, and what's next? "This refrigerator is pretty dang nice, but it doesn't have a DVD player! It sucks!!"

yeah, i gotta agree that the Wii is much better than the PS3 in every perspective other than the hardware (which to the average gamer, doesn't really matter that much in a console)

i doubt i'll be getting a next-gen console anytime soon, but if i had to choose, it would be the Wii hands down.

1. IGN editors are fanboys. All of them.

2. IGN is a business. The more people visit their website, the more money they make.

Conclusion: Well, what do you think?

3. You'd be a fool if you didn't recognize payoffs in this video game journalism industry.

They both only have one good game, both software launches sucked as they always do. That considered, you have to judge the consoles based on hardware, otherwise the argument remains "is Resistance better than Zelda?"

Of course you don't agree with IGN because you all bought Wiis and are enjoying them a great deal, but other than a different control method, the PS3 is superior in terms of hardware specs and capabilities.

If the contest was "which console is more fun?" the results might be different, but that would be entirely subjective, and so a judgement is made based on what both consoles have to offer, and currently the PS3 is technically the more complete package.

I disagree. Wii sports on it's own is amazing and everybody that got to make their Miis and play Wii sports were all very amused. Gamers and non gamers alike.

The Wii is hot stuff right now.

Re: Wherein Stonecutter rushes to the defense of Nintendo

The wii is doing an incredible job captivating the non-gamers. At my dorm we had people who never game all crowding in the lounge to look at the Wii. As far as development goes, the wii might hit a dry spell in a year or two when third parties need to fall back on the PS3 and 360s graphics. Of course, Nintendo always has had strong first party support.

In terms of launch, the Wii had a better launch. But hey, IGN is IGN, a website that has way to much flash and huzzah that I stopped reading years ago.
