Zelda Mirrored
![]() Seems as though they flipped the entire game to make Link right-handed. That's so...odd. |
Re: Zelda Mirrored
That'll really be weird if you play both versions, since the GCN version still has a left handed Link...
/me shrugs and walks away |
Re: Zelda Mirrored
If you look at the two maps, they're also slightly different, despite being reversed.
|
Re: Zelda Mirrored
So thats why it took a year, just to mirror the game from GCN and Wii :p
|
Re: Zelda Mirrored
Could it be that the images are just mirrored? I've seen that happen before with preview material... Well, in movies at least (in the cheesy Silent Hill movie TV spots, as Dark Alessa says "I am the Reaper", she's on the left side of the screen facing right... In the actual movie she's on the right facing left)...
If they really did mirror the whole game... Then... Well... What about the left-handed people? :sneaky: |

It's just a gimmick to get you to buy both the Gamecube and Wii version.

So... This begs the question... Why not just flip (or edit/remake) Link's character model instead of y'know... Flipping the entire game? Perhaps it's just that one area? Perhaps our written language has evolved and now has the power to correct itself when mirrored? |
Re: Zelda Mirrored
Maybe Link just has to go back through that area? Or the screenshot was just taken while Link was turned around? It could, perhaps, be symmetrical.
Or maybe there's just a very very similar area... Unless they say, "We switched the whole game" or someone plays both and realizes its been switched, I would think it'd be safer to assume it hasn't been flipped around... /me shrugs and walks away |
Re: Zelda Mirrored
Maybe it's like a race game; after you beat the game you unlock "mirror" mode as a cheap form of replay! YAY
But, look at the mini-map. Yes, the Wii version is mirrored on the Y-axis, but there's more to it than just that: rather than having the area exit be north, it now exits to the northeast. Perhaps the layout change was made to fit with the next area's entry (i.e. entry from the southwest). And, to justify the mirroring, perhaps the northeast part of the map was unaccessable under the original design, and that it was easier to mirror the small area rather than reconstruct the northern section. AND, maybe they couldn't have altered the northern part of the map even if they wanted to, due to some sort of puzzle... such as mirrors. (, sorry) |
Re: Zelda Mirrored
I think it's silly to think that they'd flip everything in a game to make Link right handed.
'Tis silliness, I declare! |
Re: Zelda Mirrored
It actually does make sense...in a stupid last minute attempt sort of way. If only his model was mirrored he would interact with everything differently and could cause problems, like in sword fighting with baddies, or certain puzzles. Not to mention cut scenes would be screwed up and would have to be reversed as well or there would be a ton of continuity errors like his hair part changing back and forth between in-game and cutscenes. But Midna's broken helmet with the one eye revealed has been shown to be the reverse of what it originally was so they did infact seem to have mirrored the entire game.
What's odd is it seems the cube version did not get this same treatment, so the two versions are that much different now. And even odder the cube version in only schedualed to be released in North America at this time, and not Japan or Europe. |

But about the Cube version... Have there been any recent pictures of the game? I can't seen to find any that have been released since E3... So I can't quite see how you've come to the conclusion that the GC version hasn't also been mirrored (assume the Wii version actually has been)... *nod* |

Well, I also got the Cube for Resident Evil 4 and StarCraft: Ghost, but Ghost got cancelled (first for the Cube, then for everything), and I beat Resident Evil 4 several times at my fiance's (her brother got the game). My Cube has seen less use than when I had an XBox. |

Re: Zelda Mirrored
What happened to the good old days when a character's weapon hand would change depending on which direction he was facing? I still remember MegaMan's blaster alternating between his right and left. That always bothered me.

Well its been confirmed now. I wonder if there is a mirror mode (normal mode) once you beat the game? |
Re: Zelda Mirrored
That didnt REALLY clear anything up. Is there a seperate mirror mode in the Wii version only, or both versions? Or when he says "mirror mode" is he simply referring to the Wii version being a mirror of the gamecube version. It really only presents more questions.
|
Re: Zelda Mirrored
I'll try to clear it up.
GameCube version is the standard Zelda game...how it was originally put together. Link is left handed. Most people are right handed. Rather than switch Link's model around (because I'm assuming it would cause too many problems with cut scene continuity and how he interacts with environment and enemies) to make him right handed for the gesture movements they reversed the entire game. So there is no "mirror mode." Just that the GameCube and Wii versions will be mirrored versions of each other. Left is right and right is left. |
Re: Zelda Mirrored
I just can't make any sense out of this. You know japanophiles complained for years about manga because mirroring it in the process of translation lost the artist's intent? This is the same ****ing thing.
It just pisses me off. |
Re: Zelda Mirrored
GCN Zelda = Confirmed Best Version
Lefties kick ass. |
Re: Zelda Mirrored
So... Maybe I'll just wait for the GCN version... I mean, I didn't really care that the GCN version was delayed, because I was going to get the Wii version as well... I didn't really care about the different controls..
But, now that we know that the Wii version has actually been switched from what it was originally designed as, I think I'm going to play the intended version first.. Even if that means waiting a few weeks... The Wii can wait... /me shrugs and walks away |
Re: Zelda Mirrored
The Wii version is now ruined for me. I can imagine it now. I'll be entering a new sweeping landscape for the first time, and the whole time instead of being awestruck by the beauty, I'll be trying to imagine it all backwards. And then I'll go crosseyed.
And no one likes to be crosseyed. Mmm hmm... sarcasm. |
Re: Zelda Mirrored
Hm, well...I mean I guess its possible that the Wii version might not be quite right because of this. I mean, imagine going through and playing OOT mirrored. Im betting it would be confusing as hell.
Then again, if that version was the only version we knew, and the version that we had been playing since 1998, wouldnt it have worked out just the same? |

So it won't be alien because you've never been through it "normal" I mean you can stress yourself imaging how the game may be if it wasn't mirrored but why? |
Re: Zelda Mirrored
I still don't understand why the game was mirrored... or why they even felt Link had to suddenly change an aspect of his character.
Is this some sort of stupid politically-correct move? That is, against any argument that Link's problem solving and combat skills correlate to his left-handedness. "I don't play games with Lefties because I'm right-handed. I want something I can relate to." |
Re: Zelda Mirrored
The reason they changed Link's sword hand for the Wii version is because they added sword swinging with the Wiimote, and since you hold the remote with your right hand and use the nunchuku as your shield, it would be very weird if Link was holding his weapons the opposite way in-game. And the reason they just went ahead and mirrored the entire game was because of a lot of inconsistencies with cutscenes and various puzzles.
|
Re: Zelda Mirrored
I think that would make more sense if Link's moements directly correlated with the player's movements, but they don't. Swinging the Wiimote is the exact same as pressing a button. I wouldn't think it'd be that important.
And the problem I have with the mirrored version is that's just not how it was originally designed. The different perspective could throw off something, or create a different interpretation from the player. I mean, it probably wouldn't be major, but it wouldn't be what the artist originally intended. Example: The art in manga used to be switched so that English speaking readers wouldn't have to flip through the pages "backwards." It makes enough sense, except that words in the art and other similar things were suddenly backwards. That's the kind of thing I'm scared of. It wouldn't ruin the game, and I do plan to play both version, I'd just rather play the "normal" one first. /me shrugs and walks away |

Sounds very reasonable. I think I posted more in response to the people that aren't reasonable about it, the ones who act like it's the end of the world now that Link is right-handed -- i.e. the IGN forum-goers (I don't know why I still look at that message board anyway) and their ilk. |

I admit it. I stole from Dyne. I was like, "Boy, Dyne sure made a nice point. I wish I had made it." So I stole it. I stole his post like a perverted man steal's a young girl's virginity.
Yes, the sole reason I explained "my own" thoughts on Zelda was simply because Dyne had also said those same thoughts. Why, I don't know what I'd be thinking about this mirrored Zelda if it weren't for Dyne. I'd be lost and clueless. I'm sure glad he was here to guide me through my way.... /me shrugs and walks away |
