The Thumbless Wonder
 

Well, I cut the tip of my thumb off at work this weekend. I was chopping cabbage for coleslaw and slipped. One of the hazards of being a chef I guess.

So I'm stuck here at home with a soft cast on my thumb until wednesday when I have to air it out and check to see what the real damage is. It didn't look all that bad as I only lost about a 1/4 centimeter or so. Bled like crazy.

Doesn't hurt much, but losing the use of a thumb sucks. Its an effort just to take a piss.

If that happened to my left thumb it wouldn't matter much, because I always play games on the joint instead of the pad. Always been that way.

I am still a student (who is getting continually screwed in terms of requirements) but I was moved from bouncer to cook a while back (I had experience cooking before) and I'm currently a chef and caterer for my employer. I will be bouncing on St. Patties as they need as many experienced bouncers as they can get and I'm the only one they trust with the door money.

I chopped my left thumb. You would think it wouldn't be that much of a bother, but it is. I had no odea how much I used my left thumb. For example, try typing without your left thumb... you'll have to change everything.

To answer several questions:

I now give a MEGA thumbs up, due to the ginormous soft cast on my thumb. Its really pretty funny to look at.

And no, the thumb is not out of service. In fact most of what I chopped off will grow back as it was soft tissue and not any tendons or musculature. The drawback is that the tip will most likely lose feeling forever.

The bright side is that my state considers this "permanent loss" and while I will only get a few days of comp until I can work again (can't handle knives sans thumb), I am entitled to a one time payout because I lost a part of myself forever. Sweeet... now I'm wondering exactly how much I need my pinky toe... :D

Actually yes. If you lose just your big toe you have to be taught to walk again because its so important to your sense of balance.

ouch.

my mom actually was working at a deli store a while back and sliced off a part of her thumb as well on one of those slicer machines. and yes the cast is quite amusing to give thumbs up with :p






p.s. the v-day meal turned out great, i added a bit of chilli and less capers and it tasted really really good...the first time i tried it out 100% to recipe but i didn't like it as much.

Hey, everything is to taste, thats why I'm always pretty vague when it comes to recipes. Hell, my coleslaw recipe calls for a handfull of sugar, a chef spoon of mayo, a squeeze of dijon, a few pinches of salt and pepper and a few splashes of vinegar. :D

BTW, the chili idea intrigues me. Did you use fresh chilis or powder?

i used the dried chilli seeds or whatever they're called, the ones you sprinkle on top of whatever you eat. i didn't have fresh chillis to use.
