Blu-Ray wont destroy DVD...Blu-Ray drives will have DVD playback it's not a replacement, but an evolution |
Re: First Blu-ray Drive by Pioneer Q1 2006
lol which is why I said Evolution, and not Revolution... that and I tried to stay away from the REVOLUTION term being as thats Nintendo's gimmick right now.

Re: First Blu-ray Drive by Pioneer Q1 2006
So....if these aren't too expensive, I'll definitely be picking one up by the end of the year. I've been looking for practicle ways to back up my music, and I don't really want to use 30 DVDs.

Re: First Blu-ray Drive by Pioneer Q1 2006
Yeah but i'm kinda wondering how much the blank ones will be. Prices have significantly be slashed for CD-R's now.... DVD's are now at a bargain price and BRD? hmm ...
I predict blank BRD's to go for $49.99 for a pack of 20 or something. But then you could fit thousands of songs or large packets of info in there... Either way.... movies will eventually make their leap to BRD, considering how many movies they have now for the UMD format for PSP. So eventually buying a PS3 will become a option for kids, teens, and adults alike. This is what happened when PS2 launched with the DVD player.... it was a hot selling point. |
Re: First Blu-ray Drive by Pioneer Q1 2006
2x BDR...Nope, not buying it yet. Those speeds will take forever to burn an entire disc. If its only comparable to 51x CD-R and it takes 2-3 minutes to burn a single CD...I dont want to imagine how long it would take with that :eyes:
Oh..and good job by the way taking a jab at a company thinking outside the box ;) |

you gotta remember, they've already stated that both BRD and HDDVD drives read thier discs MUCH faster then DVD drives do. so a 2x BRD might be comparable to current DVD speeds. 2x one format doesnt equal 2x another format. people used to think the same thing about DVD drives, "well how come a DVD drive says it reads at 16x while a CD drive reads over 50x, isnt that much slower?" different drives, different forms of measurment. |

Re: First Blu-ray Drive by Pioneer Q1 2006
No..I meant if you compare the fact it takes 2-3 minutes roughly for a 52x CD Burner to burn a full CD, and that BRD is ALOT higher then that, the burn times are going to be very high.
I'm not purposely screwing up my math if I am. I'm comparing the fact that 2x of anything media related is "slow" even if brand new. Would you buy a 2x CD burner or 2x DVD burner? ;) I'm gonna wait until probably at least 4x since its a ltitle better off. Hell, we arent even close to 52x for DVD's :p |
Re: First Blu-ray Drive by Pioneer Q1 2006
you have no idea the value of the speed yet..
you could be right OR, 1x BRD could be as fast as a 54x CD. and 2x is twice as fast. a bit unrealistic maybe.. However, isnt the highest speed for burning a DVD still at just 16x, and thats almost as fast as it is to burn a full CD. so taken into account that a full DVD is 4gb, and a full CD 800mb... then 16x DVD is a whole lot faster then 54x CD. stands to reason that the newer formats are going to be faster and therefor have a lower number. BTW.. 2 or 3min? i burn a full CD in 30sec. |

Let's go out on a limb and say you actually fill up a 25GB BDR. It would write on 1x the full 25GB in 11 minutes. Now a 2x which is 72mbps would write the full 25GB in... 5 minutes If my research is correct 52x CD-R is about 7.8mbps...which is significantly slower than 1x BDR... :) enough speed for you Jonbo or a lil sluggish? |
Re: First Blu-ray Drive by Pioneer Q1 2006
I dont want to wait 11 minutes to burn a BDR ;) If it was 72mbps for a DVD, that would be nice but for something ALOT larger, its sluggish compared to whats to come ;)
4x and I'll probably consider a BDR PC Drive :) I dont like waiting too long for a CD/DVD to burn. :p Null: Maybe my CD burner is slow to kickup then..its 52x but maybe its just slower to get up to that speed. Probably is but oh well, ill upgrade eventually :p |
Re: First Blu-ray Drive by Pioneer Q1 2006
11 Minutes....pfffft. I remember back in 6th grade, I'd wait 45 minutes at my friends house to burn a CD. Nowadays, I wait 30 seconds like Null.
Won't the Playstation 3 be using Blu-Ray discs? If so, Sony is probably crapping themselves right now. I know pirating is inevitable, but if Blue-Ray comes out before the PS3...lol. |
Re: First Blu-ray Drive by Pioneer Q1 2006
sony (along with partner companies) is the one making blue ray discs. sony is controlling exactly what they want to happen with them.
its not like it just so happens that PS3 will come out with blu ray support while all the actual blu ray players will cost much much more. |
