Perfect Dark Zero "Blew Gamespot Away"

"This awesome, high-tech first-person shooter champions the Xbox 360 with its excellent assortment of single- and multiplayer game types, as well as its incredible good looks and dynamic, intense action."

"Taken as a whole, Perfect Dark Zero is decidedly one of the best, fully featured Xbox 360 games so far, and it's a compelling reason to spring for the system if you've been on the fence. While the game doesn't reinvent the first-person shooter, which has been a mainstay of action gaming for more than a decade, it delivers one of the most highly refined and spectacular examples of this brand of gameplay to date. From its ravishing good looks and totally first-rate audio, to the believable feel of its outstanding weapons, to its wealth of single- and multiplayer options, Perfect Dark Zero delivers just about everything you could hope for from a first-person shooter."

Full review here.

So, where are all the naysayers now? I'd assume they're going to mysteriously disappear like they always do.

I've never played it, and highly doubt I ever will.

But I've always thought this game would be good.

And even if it isnt good, the first games released for a new system usually are the worst gameplay and graphics wise anyways.

But I think the game would be good, so meh.

Well they are...

...not like I played PD or Goldeneye for N64 either...though hear they were good...actually besides Conker (which I liked) and Banjo-Tooie (which I didn't) I haven't played any other Rare games. Just know their GCN run was poor.

Lets go back in the past to some of the aforementioned naysayers who were again proven wrong:

Dyne: "I admit I'm interested in it but I just don't think it'll have the polish rare's previous works had."

GameMaster: "I'd say this is the final nail in the coffin for Rare."

gekko: "Can it get any worse?"

Jonbo: "Poor Rare...what happened to you"

Canyarion: "What's Rare again?"

Jason1: "Rare obviously went downhill since leaving nintendo."

bobcat: "Rare?

Who's that again?"

Link1130: "I personally can't help but see Perfect Dark Zero becoming anything more than a letdown."

Null: "i'd be willing to bet money it will be a let down."

AzeaL: "I Can't Remember What Perfect Dark Was, Wasn't It That One FPS Game On n64 Where You Needed That Special Doo Dad To Play Campaign?"

Re: Perfect Dark Zero "Blew Gamespot Away"

Yea, maybe I jumped the boat a little too early so to speak...I mean...did they release ANYTHING worth a **** on Xbox? And how long did they have with the system?

Not to mention, just how long was PD0 in development for? 5 years? It might not have been quite that long, but I'll bet its damn close. When a game is in development that long, if its not good, then there is something seriously wrong with the people making the game, and I dont care that it started as a gamecube project.

Anywho, we all knew Rare is a very talented development house, so this dosent really suprise me. But looking back at what they accomplished on Xbox, I dont think any of our comments were un-justified.

Considering Rare's track record starting from SFA to the XBox games (one of which was a remake of a game that didn't need it, the other of which apparentely sucked) I still stand by that statement.

And I have said nothing against XBox or XBox360, at least not since the console early last generation... So, no, you're not documenting years of anti-Xbox/Xbox360 rhetoric, but anti-Rare rhetoric, which are quite different. This is fortunate since otherwise the Xbox's library would be very very bare.

Oh snap.

Yeah, I bought it with Mario Kart 64 a week ago to get ready for Mario Kart. God, you might have fuzzy memory of it, but it was literally 15 fps in some spots. And worse.

It's a shame that this game is getting pushed out at launch when it clearly could have used more time polishing and tuning. Then again, Rare's had years to make this game, and I'm not sure extra time wouldn't have just dragged out the inevitable. Perfect Dark Zero is what it is -- something of a throwback, something of a vanguard. It's not a must-buy yet from what I've seen (and true enough, we've had a lot of laugh at spots that weren't supposed to be funny ... there's plenty that haters will hold over it to keep fans wincing for years) but if you sit down and play it, PDZ looks to be a game that can deliver decently over the long run.

Huh? I'm still here.

I've read mixed opinions on PD0. Some think it's the greatest thing ever while others think it's utter crap. I've heard words such as "boring" and "wonky" in reference to it. It just depends on your taste I suppose.

MuGen 11-23-2005 11:27 AM

Re: Perfect Dark Zero "Blew Gamespot Away"

I can tell you one thing, a review is a review and opinions are opinions. I played PDZ at my local Gamestop Xbox360 kiosk and it wasn't looking next-gen to me. What I saw was an exact representation of Ken Kutaragi's statement.... Xbox 1.5

I take a look at the other games for Xbox 360 and those just look amazingly sick in terms of visual and smooth gameplay. I didn't enjoy PDZ at all...

You can take what you will from that Gamespot review, I stand by my opinion. There are sicker games out there for the 360, PDZ isn't one of them.

Jonbo298 11-23-2005 11:58 AM

Re: Perfect Dark Zero "Blew Gamespot Away"

I said that comment because it resembled nothing of the original. Granted, its a prequel and N64 is different from the 360 but hopefully you get the point.

Plus, those comments were made MONTHS ago before we even saw the final product. Hell, if Rare had PDZ playable at E3, I may have said different.

So stop thinking past comments are still 100% current. Things do change Bond

Well I'm glad Rare didn't go completely to waste. Grabbed by the Ghoulies was not promising for them.

Once they release Banjo Kazooie 360, I'm pretty much sold.

Xantar 11-23-2005 03:42 PM

Re: Perfect Dark Zero "Blew Gamespot Away"

Considering that Perfect Dark: Zero was in development for 10 years and that it was touted by many as THE killer app for the Xbox 360, I'd say that a ranking of 87% on GameRankings.com is kind of a disappointment. What's really interesting is GameSpot's review is actually the second highest rating there (some site called Talk Xbox gave the game 97%). GameSpot is normally on the low end, but I guess in this case they just really liked it. It should also be noted that as of this post, IGN Xbox hasn't had their say yet.

Also, some might say Kameo is getting good reviews. But that kind of depends on what your definition of good reviews is. How does 77% do for you?

I stand by my original statements. It appears so far that while Rare doesn't produce absolute crap, Perfect Dark: Zero is no Goldeneye (or even Perfect Dark) and Kameo is no Banjo Kazooie.

And let's also keep in mind that Star Fox Adventures initially had really high reviews. But you'll have a hard time now finding many people who still think it's great.

The important thing here is that Bond targeted several people and in one way or another, we've all given him a severe pwning in his very own thread. He set himself up with the assumption he'd be able to wriggle free with some very misplaced and innappropiate egotism. And now looking back on this thread, he's the one who's been ****ed over the hardest. I guess he was absent from the 'ol Catholic school on the day his righteous teachers taught the old adage, "practice what you preach."

Yea I never had a problem with Star Fox Adventures either. Its coming in at 81% from gamerankings, and IGN gave it a 9.0. I thought the ending was especially killer. Anyways, people do diss on SFA too much I believe.

So IGN > Gamespot now? Hmmm, that seems to go against sooooo much of what most hardcore gamers believe. All of a sudden new sources of information have new levels of validity because they parrot what you were already thinking.

Welcome to politics of the self-fulfilling prophecy.

And Xantar, my observation of Kameo was referring to Gamespot's and IGN's reviews, both of which were well into the 8's. And actually I would place a game at 7.7 into the "good" range in general. Not all games can be life changing experiences. Sometimes good can be good enough.

And Gamemaster, for the record you are a RAVING Nintrendo fanboy, so your opinion means little here.
