On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
... Nintendo's fourth home video game console, belonging to the 128-bit era; the same generation as Sega's Dreamcast, Sony's PlayStation 2, and Microsoft's Xbox was released. The GameCube itself is the most compact and inexpensive of the Sixth generation era consoles.
Please take a moment to share a story about how the Gamecube has personally touched your life. ![]() |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
I didn't get the cube when it first came out...rather the summer after. But I did take it for a test drive at NYC's CubeClub and met the first of the two GTers I've met...a certain anarctic bird. Just don't ask him about what occurred there...he remembers things differently.
When I did get it I first rented Rouge Squadron. Was ok. Rented a number of games after that until I got my first game for the system: Animal Crossing. Don't think I've played any game in my life more than that. At college my cube was always being stolen by my friends when I was asleep/at class/not looking directly at my cube to play Mario Kart. Me and my roomie would play through all the cups at 5am most days. And now my cube is gathering dust. I haven't played it since Pikmin 2 came out. Poor little fella. Once Zelda comes out my purple buddy will shine once more. |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
Gamecube has ended up as one of my favourite consoles. I'm sure the almost 60 games will testify to that.
I am a complete cult follower to it. Quote:
I don't know why, I just love Gamecube to death. |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
What sucks was that I had to wait for over a year and a half for the GC, because I couldnt afford it, and had to rely on my parents... but 6 months after launch, I bought a memory card, extra controller, and Super Smash Bros Melee, which I still own, and still in working condition...
|
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
I got it soon after release, for my birthday. I had to buy half of it, though, and my grandma paid for the rest (and she then said that I'd have to get a lesser Christmas present, and bought me a S'mores kit *grumble*).
Star Wars: Rogue Leader - Rogue Squadron II was my first game, followed by Luigi's Mansion, followed by Super SMash Bros. Melee. None of which, because of my typical "wear it out and get something new" style (especially back then), do I currently own.... /me shrugs and walks away |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
Got it on release. Never regretted the purchase. I had more enjoyment with the N64 but the 'Cube has so far had a really good library of first party games/second party.
|
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
I rented the cube with Mario Kart shortly after it came out.
My mom got one and so I got to play Wind Waker when it came out. A couple months after Wind Waker came out my mom bought me my own GC so I would have it with me at college. Then, almost 1 year ago I finally got a second platinum controller to go with my cube. jeepnut ordered it special...before they were in the stores here. I now have a controller direct from Japan and am very proud of it (no one else is allowed to use it) |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
Bought it on release day with Rogue Leader. At that time, my brother didn't think he'd like Rogue Leader, so he didn't pay half of it, so he wasn't allowed to play it (yeah, we were hard back then :D). To have something to play together, and because we heard it was a good game, we bought Super Monkey Ball. Probably one of the best buys. A few weeks later SSB:M cane out and a bit after that Pikmin.
Games I had most fun with? The ones I mentioned, 1080° Avalanche (really turned out to be a good moody game), Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil, Metroid Prime. I was disapointed by Zelda: The Wind Waker and PSO I&II. Super Mario Sunshine was just good enough. I have more games, but I guess those were average. I really missed a good shooter (Time Splitters 2 didn't cut it for me). |

Nevar 4get.

Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
I imported from Japan, took it apart and bridged the region connectors with a soldering iron. After I initially picked it up from UPS I had to go back to work so I took the controller and set it on my desk. I played with it whenever I had a chance.

Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
I really liked Wind Waker and I'm still playing Day of Reckoning 2 (the best wrestler since No Mercy). Thought RE4 and Metroid Prime were WAAAAAAAAAAY overrated. Other than that, not much to report.

Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
I have never owned, or barely touched a Gamecube in all of my existence on this whirling oblate sphere of life.
I have however enjoyed Mario Tennis, and Mario Kart. Thats about the extent of my GC playing library. |

Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
I bought my Cube 3 days after launch at Toys R Us so technically this would by my 4th anniversary with it.
It is the first and probably last system I buy at launch. My cube and I have been through some good times and some good games. First games I got were Rogue Squadron which was ok but not a fan of Star Wars. Luigi's Mansion which was fun but way too short. And Super Monkey Ball probably one of the most underrated franchises ever ( I can't get people to play because of the name). Soon afterwards I got that game I brought a Cube for.. also the game I beat Daniel at when we met at Cube Club. The game has logged a ton of hours on my cube. Throughout the four years, my Cube has met with highs and lows. I was disappointed with the first wrestling game WrestleMania x8, which slowly evolved over the 4 games until Day of Reckoning 2 which is probably one of the best wrestling games.. at least with the WWE license. I pretty much became MArio central owning Mario Power Tennis, Mario Golf, Mario Kart, Mario Sunshine, Mario Party 4 n 6, Mario Baseball... completing Paper Mario And it is a huge hit on my campus.. at least for folks who know me. Sure folks have their Halo and Madden.. but you just can't beat Mario Kart or even Mario Party... also Bomberman... I would list my games.. but eh... after class edit the post |

I admit those were my downfalls originally too, but how could you have passed up the free month? And I heard for Europe it was more than a month.
Seriously though, there was something right with online. I ended up making every mag makeable. |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
Oh yeah, we also didn't have the connection back then. We had broadband, but no router yet...
I don't know, that game never captured my interest. |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
ah the memories.
I remember me and my bro playing Eternal Darkness.........that was so fun and intriguingly different |

I remember watching Dylflon play it most of the way through, but that didn't stop me from playing through myself three times.
I don't think it was underrated but I definitely don't think it was overrated. |

Anywho, I got mine for Christmas, 2001. First games were Rouge Leader, Smash Bros Melee, and Luigis Mansion. Best game hands down is Metroid Prime. I highly disagree with Stonecutter on both accounts, but especially Metroid Prime. To put it simply, Metroid Prime is the best game to come out since Zelda OOT. |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
Me and my bro went halfers on buying the Cube around the time Animal Crossing came out. I think that was the first game we had for the system.
We mainly buy and play multiplayer games such as Soul Calibur II, Markio Kart, Wario Warez, Mario Tennis, etc. We mainly just use the PS2 for our one player games. |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
Wow, yes I remember. On November 18th, I woke up at 4:00 AM in the morning with my best friend and we went over to Wal-mart. My Wal-mart only had 12 in stock, and I figured that more people would be at the Target down in Delaware. I was lucky enough to find that only 4 other kids were out waiting for it. They apparently went out at 3:00 in the morning. I think one of them was an albino too..but anyway. It was a glorious day. I had already purchased Rogue Squadron II Rogue Leader, and my mom bought Luigi's Mansion for me when I got the system. I haven't had a lot of time to get an extensive collection, but it is a quality one with many games involving Nintendo Mascots. Nintendo is great, and I hope that I will be able to get a Nintendo Revolution.

Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
I know that when it came out I didn't know it was coming out. And I don't own it now. I like it though, much fun has been had with it over at Dylflons with his brother.

I'll never buy it until it hits $5) Virtua Striker 2002 (I've only ever seen this in the states, and it was $49 every place I saw.) Also, does anyone remember Dead Phoenix of the Capcom 5? I still remember, that's the only Capcom 5 game that I was initially interested in. I couldn't have given a crap anymore about Viewtiful Joe at the time, I wasn't interested in RE4 really, PN03 looked generic, and Killer 7 looked boring. Now I own the entire Capcom 4 and they're some of my favourite games. Funny how things work. |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
I'd be reluctant to buy Shadow the Hedgehog. It didn't fare well with IGN.
You might want to add Prince of Persia, Spider-Man 2, and Incredible Hulk. Spider-Man 2 and Hulk are both GTA style mission/free roam games. Prince of Persia was really well done. I never completed it but you can tell they put effort into it. There are a ton of Cubivores on eBay with an average price of $32. |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
Thanks for the suggestions.
Well, I'm weird. I really like bad games. I liked Superman 64 a lot, and Shaq Fu. I'm sure Shadow the Hedgehog isn't as bad as IGN says. Besides, Nintendo Power gave it an 8.0. The Incredible Hulk might be good to look into, yeah, because I might be doing co-op at Radical Entertainment down the line. Prince of Persia I've considered before but I haven't seen it around. And Spiderman 2 I'll consider, but I'm mostly focusing on first-party and second-party titles. I can't wait to get a student credit card so I can buy things online. I have to wait another month though! |

If you care to listen, here are my reasons: RE4: Great graphics, true. The over-the-shoulder view, while nice, was anything but revolutionary. The AI sucked. Hard. The boss battles, while spectacular looking, were repetetive and derivative. When he does this, shoot here, when he does that, shoot there... repeat. The weapons upgrading was nice, but about 5 years late and hardly constituted the "role-playing element" people talked about. The whole game felt and played like a game from a previous generation with a graphical upgrade. Metroid Prime: Looked great. Played pretty well, minus the confusing and clumsy targeting system. Other than that... why was I playing? There was a nearly non-existant story, and what there was you had to research through text based evidence in between getting lost and constantly backtracking. I know they were trying to do a 3D recreation of the gameplay in the original games, but it didnt work for me at all. I tried to play this game on 3 different occassions, based solely on reviews and public opinion, and I couldn't stand it. RE4 was a good game made to look like a fantastic one. Metroid Prime was unplayable IMO. Pure frustration, and not the good kind. Now to be fair, here are my favorite Gamecube games: Eternal Darkness: Love this game and it was the most addictive game I had played in a long time prior to WoW. Was the gameplay great? Not really. Were the puzzles challenging? Nope. The story was why you played. It was creepy, and unnerving and engrossing. I didn't want to see what happened next, I NEEDED to see what would happen next. Day of Reckoning 2: Best wrestling game I've played since No Mercy. Finally, wrestling simulations have a home. Wind Waker: Utterly charming and the best example of what cell shading can add to a game artistically. Every time a foe was thwarted and dissappeared in a swirling cloud, I was treated with the brilliance of the art design. The game was pretty good too. |

Ok, enough TWW bashing for today. :D The only thing that stands out in The Wind Waker compared to the other Zelda games is the story. :) Not that it's a great story (compared to the average RPG), but it was better than OoT and MM... I have very high hopes for The Twilight Princess. :) |

It wasn't Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask. But it was never intended to be. It was a completely different gaming experience from earlier Zelda games and different doesn't necesarily mean less-than. I appreciated the fact that they tried something new and somewhat experiemental. Its better than the rehashes of old gameplay and themes that RE4 and Metroid Prime represent. |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...

Also being one of the few that was not directly related to the events of another (Majora's Mask follows OoT and Link's Adventure follows Zelda) but Wind Waker was a new start that still made many references to the OoT. Also I loved some of the dungeons and the final boss albeit a tad easy was sweet. |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
It was a neat style for Wind Waker, and I'm a big supporter of the game itself, but I seriously thought it could've used some orchestral music.
Nintendo started slumping with the series. They hit a high with Majora's Mask and the Oracle games, but Wind Waker was a little disappointing and Minish Cap was downright disappointing. I don't care for Minish Cap at all. And the worst thing is, I know it's short, but I'd rather not waste my time on it anyways. And Four Swords was good for a little multiplayer romp but it wasn't the absolute best. Thankfully Nintendo took the hint with TP. |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
I recently discovered that TWW has some nice music (I've found the 2CD soundtrack), but not the famous catchy tunes that the other games had. The only (new) song that I can remember is the sea tune (though that has the overworld tune through it?) and the intro song with the panflutes or whatever. :) The rest is pretty (though Dyne is right), but not memorable.
The Zelda series has awesome music. I have all the soundtracks. :) I'm really curious about the TTP score. :D |
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
I think the music doesn't seem as catchy and rememberable is because it's more atmospheric for the most part. The boss battle with Molgera has to be one of my favorite video game songs. Definitely catchy. No Saria's Song but still good. The other stuff is pretty beautiful like the opening theme or the Earth God's Lyric. Both have an Irish feel to them.
|
Re: On this day, 4 years and two days ago...
I just listened to my MP3s of Molgera... it's catchy, but it has no.... rythm. It's impossible to whistle along with it. Except when they hint at Saria's Song. Then you remember how cool that song was.
Edit: Can somebody tell me the total sales of GCN? |
