Weird Food?
We were talking about this in one of my education classes last night, and I figured it would go well with the current heritage thread.
Are there any foods that your family eats traditionally that some would consider weird? Like when you tell people about them they say, " you eat what?" Some examples might be bologna and jelly or cow heart and spaetzle. |
Re: Weird Food?
Well for multicultural day back in middle school for me, I had to find a food of my heritage. So my family decided on goat cheese, from Norway.
We actually like it a lot. Nobody else dared to try it at the luncheon though. I think it was the sign that said "tastes slightly like peanut butter." |
Re: Weird Food?
i've had onion pie {german dish} but most of the people I tell that to, don't normally say, "you eat what", their first expression is "ew".

Re: Weird Food?
Scrapple and Baked Beans for dinner
Tomato Aspic Salad (tomato gelatin with sour cream) Pig Sous (geletin with everything they don't put in scrapple) Roast Pork with sauerkraut, knockwurst and whipped potatoes I grew up on all that crap. |
Re: Weird Food?
The only thing I can think of, is that I've been eating sushi all my life, before it because popular with culture.

I'm guessing he was trying to say that he began eating sushi before it became culturally popular. :p As far as wierd foods from my family, I can't really think of any. We're pretty American in our diet. I guess the closest thing I can come up with is that my mother, father, and sister all really like shrimp pizza. |

Re: Weird Food?
Given my neighborhood we buy all our groceries from Asian markets. My favorite food is red bean paste dough balls...as well as red bean paste cookies...practically anything with red bean paste is delicious.
When I wasn't a vegetarian probably the weirdest thing I ever ate was a sea cucumber (sea slug). It tasted like warm hard jello that I couldn't break down into small enough pieces to swallow. ![]() Also had ostrich jerky which was really really good. People who know me think I have the weirdest eating habits. I make tomato soup by boiling water and squirting in a good amount of ketchup. I eat a jar of salsa for dinner sometimes. I don't eat meat but I like the condiments for hotdogs so I'll eat a hotdog without the hotdog...so that's sauerkraut, relish, and ketchup in a toasted bun. I put pickles on pizza. I dretch ketchup onto hard boiled eggs which I affectionally call "Bloody Eggs." Dunno if that's uncommon or not...roommate turned me onto it. Basically ketchup makes anything good. Hummus is a staple in my family. Thought it was normal until I went to college and people were actually afraid of my dinner. Also like Tabouleh which is a lebanese salad of bulgur wheat and finely chopped scallions, tomatoes, mint, and parsley. |
Re: Weird Food?
I like to dip roasted chicken in ketchup ... some people think that is wrong but I like it.
I also like toast with peanut butter and honey. But the bread has to be warm or the honey doesn't spread on the peanut butter right. |
Re: Weird Food?
I feel like a loser, I don't like anything weird.
I do like the fine, fine appetizer of Caucasian pie though. |
Re: Weird Food?
Actually, sometimes, I enjoy these fine two types of sandwiches:
A salsa sandwich A BBQ sauce sandwich I went throguh a phase of about a year, where on any hamburger or hotdog, all I would have on it was Mayo and BBQ sauce. Salsa actually goes quite well on Hamburgers by itself though. |

Fish, chicken, steak, bacon, etc. People think I'm weird for that. |
Re: Weird Food?
Ketchup is used by a lot of parents to mask the flavour of things. The high sugar content cancels out flavour. Maybe you just grew up not liking the flavour of meats.
This is why in Chicago they don't put ketchup on hot dogs. I guess it got popular because people grew up having ketchup on their hot dogs, but seriously. Ketchup obliterates real hot dog flavour. I have seen the light. Join me in my religious sect against ketchup on hot dogs. |
Re: Weird Food?
I love the flavor of meat. It's just better with ketchup!

Re: Weird Food?
A few days ago I discovered a new combination: mashed potatoes with sambal. It gives it that extra spicy flavour that it can really use.
I can't think of anything really special. Perhaps macaroni with ketchup. Or even mayonaise. Yeah..... I don't eat that anymore though... |
Re: Weird Food?
I too, have been known to abuse ketchup. For it goes wonderfully with Sunday morning toast. Why settle for sweet jams or jelly when that salty red sauce is only a refridgerator shelf away?
And ketchup with macaroni and cheese. And sausage. And scrambled eggs. And bacon. Ketchup for everything!!! Oh, wheat thins and cream cheese are good too. |

I'm a pretty adventurous eater... Will try almost anything except for things like testicles and brains. I'm fine with other bits and pieces though. |
Re: Weird Food?
we eat long legged toads....specially bred ones, not those from the garden.
and if you re wondering; they taste a lil like chicken just more tender. Its just the way they kill the toads that freak me out :errr: . I think Chinese people are the worst when it comes to "weird food" dogs, snakes, crocodiles, squirrels, bats..... my grandpa who came from china used to joke that chinese people eat everything under the sun that moves. :( |

Re: Weird Food?
Well, in terms of my heritage, my family eats Keilbasa everyone once in a while, which we get from the Polish are of Philadelphia. Something weird I do is dip potato chips in mustard. I have no clue when I started this, but sometimes I do stuff like that and I end up liking it a lot. I suppose you would have to really like mustard.
